And finally, there is you. As you prepare to enter our sacred space, we share the words of our Director of Learning and Engagement, Kim Bodemer, “It is customary when completing a book of Torah to declare, ‘chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek!’ This Hebrew phrase can be translated as, be strong, be strong, and we will be strengthened! As we reemerge from a time of great isolation and begin anew, we have the opportunity to come back strengthened by the knowledge that we are resilient and strong. This will be a year to rediscover who we are, who our community is, and how we define our relationships with one another. We can explore Jewish wisdom, spirituality, and Jewish culture, and consider how it can nourish us in unexpected ways.” Our colleague, Kim, is wise. We need the nourishment only a synagogue can provide—now more than ever. May this be a year of health, sweetness and joy. L’Shana Tova! MEET RABBI GUBITZ! A brief review and update of all we have achieved during this past year. Besides our regular Friday night services, b’nai mitzvahs, Saturday minyan and Torah study, our community’s congregational life continued. And most importantly all the programming events took place online. • Our nursery school blossomed as it moved outdoors and our summer camp is back in operation. • Our unique Learning & Engagement Program started online, made changes when needed, and reunited this spring, always mindful of safety. Temple Shalom members planned and developed many of our activities and events creating opportunities for our community. These continue now as we begin to come together, while still providing online access. • Our Sisterhood brought us among other events, the Speakers and Spice series, monthly Sisterhood Socials, a book salon, and a cooking demonstration - Rosh Chodesh groups continued to meet. • The Israel Committee sponsored a number of informative and timely presentations, classes and tours. • The Tzedek Team provided ideas for involvement during a period of isolation, including sending postcards to targeted states to get out the vote, informing us about issues, organizing for Women’s Reproductive Health, collecting food for those who are food insecure and many other initiatives. • Our softball team, the Shtarkers, came back for another season. • The Pe’ah Garden continues to provide a bounty that is added to the food going to the Freedge, a free community refrigerator that is truly making a difference to our broader community. • Our Caring Community continues to care for all of us by delivering meals, providing rides, and bringing challah for Shabbat to homes of families in mourning. Their phone calls to our senior population helped reduce isolation. Other important initiatives, led by members of our Executive Committee and Board of Directors began and will help move us forward. • The Engagement Committee is working with our Learning and Engagement staff to make everyone feel welcome and that they belong to our community. • The Advancement Committee is working to close gaps in our budget and provide opportunities to honor and remember our members, families and friends. • The new Marketing Committee is working to increase our membership. • The Dues Restructuring Committee is framing a future that opens doors for membership. • The Finance Committee is working closely with our treasurer and executive director to make certain our budget is robust and serves our needs. There is more - including book groups, a men’s group, our long standing movie night, a mahjong game each Wednesday, we could go on. We thank all of the many volunteers who, without their efforts, these events and activities could not take place. And if it doesn’t exist please tell us or a member of the Board of Trustees, or speak to our Learning and Engagement Team. You are part of this community. We encourage you to join any of the ongoing temple endeavors. We look forward to next year working together in partnership with you. We hope to see and greet you in early September as we gather as a community to celebrate the High Holy Days. Congratulations to Michelle Alkon on becoming our first Membership Secretary. HOLD THE DATE A Conversation with Sarah Hurwitz - Thursday, September 23, 7:00 pm After a decard as a political speechwriter for leaders like Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama as as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama, Sarah Hurwitz decided to apply her skills as a communicator to writing a book... about Judaism. Hurwitz was the quintessential lapsed Jew - until age thirty-six when she attended a beginner’s class on Judaism. Attending on a whim, she found beautiful rituals, helpful guidance on living an ethical life, and new conceptions of God. Non of what discovered had she learned in Hebrew shool or during the two synagogue services she grudginly attended each year. That class led to a challenging, moving - and ultimately life-transforming - journey. Hurwitz is on a mission to share the profound insights she discovered in studying Jewish law, history, spirituality, and ethics. She has gained access to vast troves of wisdom on everything from holidays, rituals, and prayer to Jewish conceptions of God, death and social justic. In this entertaining and accessible book, she shows us why Judaism matters and how its message is more relevant than ever, and she inspires Jews to do the learning, questioning, and debating required to make this religion their own. Email Sisterhood@templeshalom.org if you’d like to participate in this program. Rothman Scholar Event with Joanne Bland - Friday evening, September 24th By the time Joanne Bland was 11 years old, she had been arrested 13. She was an active participant in Bloody Sunday, marching alongside 600 or more only to get brutally beaten, tear gassed and hit by policemen on horses with billy clubs. Her early involvement in the struggle against “Jim Crow”, the American apartheid, has been the foundation and fuel for her civil and human rights work. Come and hear her story and learn more about what you can do in this time to bring more equity and justice to the world. Bland is the founder of Foot Soldiers Park & Education Center (footsoldierspark.org) whose mission is to preserve and memorialize the Civil Rights history of Selma, bring economic and cultural revitalization to the city’s residents, and prepare the next generation of activists to continue the fight against racial injustice and voter suppression. The organization grew out of a January 2020 multi-generational Temple Shalom/Etgar 36 trip to Alabama and Georgia. Stepping out of your comfort zone - Saturday, October 16, at 7:30 PM on Zoom Do you feel comfortable delivering bad news? Do you look forward to speaking in public? Is it easy for you to speak your mind and be assertive with friends and colleagues? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, this event is for you! Come hear Andy Molinsky discuss findings from his book Reach. You’ll learn about why it’s so hard for people to step outside their comfort zones, how they avoid doing so, and how to be more successful. Andy Molinsky is a Professor of Organizational Behavior and International Management at Brandeis University. His work helps people develop the insights and courage necessary to act outside their personal and cultural comfort zones when doing important, but challenging, tasks in work and life. He earned his Ph.D in Organizational Behavior and M.A. in Psychology from Harvard University. He also holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Columbia University. Andy consults and lectures widely to corporate audiences and is the creator of the “Global Dexterity Certification Program” for coaches, teachers, trainers, and consultants seeking to adapt successfully to foreign cultures without losing themselves in the process. Sisterhood Socials: “Stories of Survival” with Lola Hahn - November 4, 2021 @ 7:30pm via Zoom Join the Sisterhood of Temple Shalom for an evening of community engagement and learning. November’s special guest speaker is Lola Hahn, the daughter of Holocaust survivors saved by Oskar Schindler. Lola will share her parents’ stories of survival in her quest to ensure that younger generations understand what took place. Lola’s parents rarely spoke about their life before escaping to America, wanting nothing more than to start a new life for their children. Lola discovered her family’s connection to Oskar Schindler and the Holocaust upon recognizing their names in the book of “Schindler’s List” published in 1982. Free. Please register online in October to receive a link for this event. JOIN US SATURDAY MORNINGS The Saturday Morning Minyan had been meeting for decades in the Rothman Chapel at 8:45am, but with Covid it changed to Zoom at 8:45 AM (coming late has never been a problem) and we hope soon it will be both at the Chapel and on Zoom. The service is lay-led, with members volunteering to read one of nine prayers, usually in English. We are a very welcoming group and provide new members a way to meet a smaller cross- section of the congregation. Prior knowledge of Hebrew of or Shabbat prayer is definitely not needed. The Zoom link is on the Temple website under “Virtual Shabbat” along with downloadable prayers.
