AUCKLAND PACIFIC EVENTS DURING RUGBY WORLD CUP 2O11 Photo credit: Michael Bradley/thevc.co.nz The Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC2011) provides Pacific communities in New Zealand with fantastic opportunities to promote their unique cultures, music, crafts, cuisine, Pacific heritage and, not to forget, sporting prowess! Dynamic Cook Islands drummers, Tahitian hula dancers, Kiribati musicians, Samoan choir and dance groups, and Tongan brass bands will all feature throughout New Zealand as we host the RWC2011. Many Pacific events are planned for Pacific team game days. The Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs has prepared a list of Pacific events and activities happening around New Zealand during the RWC2011 tournament. This will be updated regularly, so check our website often for updated events and activities www.mpia.govt.nz
The Auckland Queens Wharf Fan Zone Pasifika in the zone Queens Wharf will be the Pacific heartbeat of the Rugby World Cup 2011 in Auckland. Open to everyone for seven days a week from September 9 to October 24; admission is free. On RWC2011 game days and in between, from mornings to late afternoons, the lively sounds of the Pacific will pulsate across the Auckland harbour and city area. Auckland and New Zealand are on show everyday with food and wine, fashion, music, business innovation and culture, as part of the REAL New Zealand Festival. Pacific arts, cultures and music will be prominently featured in all Queens Wharf activities from 10 September to the 23 October 2011. In between and during game days, from mornings to the afternoon, the lively sounds of the Pacific will be heard across Auckland harbour and the city area.

Celebrating Tonga Rugby red tie dinner Saturday 10 September 2011 6.30pm, The Langham Hotel Ballroom, Auckland. Come mix and mingle with guests, including dignitaries, and government and community leaders from Tonga and New Zealand. Also in attendance will be international Tongan rugby legends, including members of the current ‘Ikale Tahi team. A church service will be held at the Loto Fale’ia Church, Mangere and will be open to everyone to pray and wish the team all the best for their games in Whangarei and Wellington. The Tonga Rugby Union Association (TRUA) will be attending this event. Karangahape Road, Auckland adopts Tonga For three special nights Auckland’s Tongan community have created a little of Tonga 'Home of the True South Pacific' for you to enjoy: Friday, 9 September, 4.30-6.30pm Saturday, 1 October, 5.30-7.30pm Thursday, 15 October, 6.00-8.00pm Taste of Tonga – experience the food and flavours of Tonga. Products from Tonga, as part of the True Pacific range, will be showcased in the area. For more information about K Road happenings visit their website: Kroad & Tongan Partner Filipe Tohi art exhibition 5.30pm Wednesday 7 September, Mangere Art Centre; the exhibition will run from 8 September to 22 October Renowned Tongan sculptor Filipe Tohi will display his contemporary paintings and sculptures, which are imbued with his island heritage. The exhibition will be launched by Tongan Prime Minister, Lord Tu’ivakano at the Mangere Art Centre.

Fiji Youth Cultural Night Ai Tukuni (Fiji's Life Story). Tuesday, 20 September, 6.30pm, One Tree Hill College, Penrose Fiji Police Band Parade 21-23 September, 12pm, Ellerslie Town Centre, then from 3pm at One Tree Hill College. The world renowned Fiji Police Band, a dazzling mixture of brass and Pacific music, will be performing. They will also be performing at the Queens Wharf Fan Zone on Saturday 24 September 2011, and 25 September outside Eden Park for the Manu Samoa vs Fiji game. The festival will showcase and celebrate Fiji’s ethnic and cultural diversity. Free entry. Fiji Arts Council showcasing Fijian Artefacts and Handicrafts 9 September - 21 October, Christ Church, 165 Ladies Mile Road, Ellerslie Town, Auckland Fiji Independence Day Celebration Events 29 September - 10 October, The Fale Pasifika, Auckland University Auckland will host celebrations and festivities that showcase Fiji to the world, with cultural performances, music, arts, handicrafts and cuisine. Free Admission. Visit the Pacific Lifeways gallery to experience the arts of Pacific cultures first hand, with the Waitakere Pacific Arts and Cultural Centre supported by the Pasifika Festival team and Pasifika Festival Villages Charitable Trust. The gallery itself is home to over 1,200 artefacts and presents contemporary as well as pre- contact material culture of the Pacific. Artefacts in Pacific Lifeways come from across the Pacific – Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Kiribati, Niue, Cook Islands, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
