BOATING & MARINA NEWS Anchoring on Lake Norman can be very tricky. The bottom of Lake Norman, in most cases, if very soft and hard to get anchor to take hold. Having the right ground tackle is very important. Remember these important tips when anchoring. 1. Make sure you have the proper size/ weight anchor for the size boat you have. 2. Having chain as part of your anchor rode rope can be very helpful. 3. Typically plow and fluke/danforth anchors are preferred. 4. When in doubt pay out more rode…see diagram to the left. 5. Remember if you don’t have a automatic windless and you are the “anchor yanker” make sure you throw anchor in a depth your willing to retreive!! Marina Manager Reminder Watercraft safety PYC has a number of fun watercraft for your enjoyment. No cost to you but we do require them to always be signed out. Although fun, these watercrafts must be taken seriously! Throughout the summer the marina can be very busy with boat traffic, so if using the watercraft make sure you stay aware at all times. PYC Watercraft Rules 1. Approach blind spots with caution! 2. All watercraft must be signed out from Ship’s Store. 3. PFD’s must be worn at all times. 4. Paddles and PFD’s must be returned to store and watercraft signed back in. 5. Sailboats can only be checked out by experienced individuals. 6. You must be at least 16 years old to check out any watercraft. 7. Be aware of other vessels at all times throughout the marina. Important statistics from www.americancanoe.org • 85% of canoe fatalities were not wearing a lifejacket. • 48% of kayak fatalities were not wearing a lifejacket • Experienced paddlers are four times as likely to wear their lifejackets. • Lifejackets not only provide additional flotation in case of a capsize or unexpected swim, but they also provide an essential layer of warmth in cold water. • Wear It! Lifejackets Matter. • Paddlers need to be aware of a few “Rules of the Road” when sharing resources with other marine traffic. Importantly, keep a proper lookout. Remember to be courteous to other boaters and law enforcement officers. They’re there to help you to be safe and have fun. Harry Smith, Marina & Aquatics Manager 12 | PeninsulaYacht.com
FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS The Ed Sherrard Memorial Power Boater of the Year Award was established a number of years ago by the PYC to encourage participation in the broad range of events hosted by the club and Fleet Committee. Ed was an active member of the club and enjoyed supporting his fellow boaters in maximizing their enjoyment of our beautiful lake. Points are awarded for a wide range of the Peninsula Yacht Club activities and extend beyond powerboat events (Raft-Ups, Lakewide History Tours, Poker Run, and many others) to include credit for volunteer participation in key club efforts as well as completion of the educational and safety seminars that keep our members safe. The winner receives recognition in our club publications, a plaque, and a $100 gift card. We are off to an active boating season, with four point-eligible events completed to date: the Lakewide History Tour and Scavenger Hunt in April, and our first Raft-up and the Fleet Commissioning/Shrimp Fest in May. Note that we also recognize all safety seminars – whether sponsored by our club or another organization – with an award of 5 points for each event attended, to a maximum of 15 points. Parents are eligible for credit for all Calvin Newman Fund Youth Safety Seminars if they also attend, via Zoom, with the next seminar scheduled for June 26th. The Ed Sherrard Power Boater of the Year Award is an enjoyable, competitive challenge that takes place every year, so please join in on the fun. For further information on the award, or to report your participation in a safety seminar by an organization other than the PYC, please contact Power Fleet Captain Pamela Black, pamela.black@kw.com. Mike Lang, Power Fleet Commander Electric Shock Drowning Education Saturday, June 19 | 10:00 am GAS DOCK Electric Shock Drowning (ESD), outside of CO poisoning, is the other silent killer around marinas. Every year someone dies/drowns due to swimming in and around docks, piers, etc. Anywhere there is electricity there will ALWAYS be a threat of electrocution while swimming! Take advantage of this free class to learn more about this growing issue in marinas. Please register online. Please note there is a 48-Hr Cancellation Policy on all Club events. 13
SAILING NEWS Several boats from Lake Norman hit the road in April to sail in the 25th anniversary of Charleston Race Week. While last year’s regatta was canceled due to the pandemic, and social distancing kept this year’s on shore festivities scaled back, nearly 175 boats from all over the country showed up to celebrate a return to racing. The Peninsula Yacht Club was represented by 2 boats in the J/88 class. Alchemy – skippered by 16 year old John Polek, and Blue – skippered by Brian O’Malley who led his boat to a 4th place finish overall in the class. The Lake Norman Yacht Club was represented by Pete Marriott & Ken Corsig in their VX-One Magic 8 Ball. Alchemy is headed to Chicago in June to compete in the Columbia Yacht Club COLORS regatta and the Helly Hansen NOOD regatta. Mark your calendars and save the date for this year’s Peninsula Cup Regatta October 2nd/3rd. Whether it is entering your boat or crewing on someone else’s, we are looking forward to seeing you there. With COVID restrictions easing, we are planning to add back in land based festivities and planning a couple of new twists that aim to make this the best Peninsula Cup yet! Greg Polek, Sail Fleet Captain PYC SOCIAL SAIL Saturday, June 12 | 12:00 - 3:00 PM Join the PYC Sail Fleet for this Social Sailing event.
