Arte Fiera, Italy’s oldest Modern and Contemporary Art Show has been the focal point of the country’s art
market for some 42 years. This latest edition will be held from 2 – 5 February with a preview on 1 February.

152 major galleries – a restricted number in the interests of quality - have been selected to turn
BolognaFiere’s Halls 25 and 26 into a huge platform of art and an opportunity to debate modern and
contemporary artistic expression. In addition, some 30 operators from the publishing, graphic art and
creativity sectors bring the total number of exhibitors to 182.
Angela Vettese, now in her second year as Artistic Director of the trade show, continues her curatorial
approach introduced in 2017, encouraging in-depth investigation of individual artists and furthering the
debate on topical art themes.

With its main focus on the choices made by Italian galleries, Arte Fiera 2018 confirms its role as Italy’s
premier national art show, reinforcing its role as a venue for cultural debate and an event that melds
seamlessly with the urban fabric of Bologna, a city renowned as a seat of learning and a seedbed of
experimentation and game-changing developments. Arte Fiera has brought together other key players on the
Bologna scene such as FICO, the Film Library, the Opera House, museums and private foundations, the
University and many private individuals. The Golinelli Foundation, for example, will be at the trade show with
an immersive 3D account of the themes dealt with in the exhibition “Imprevedibile – Preparing for the future
without knowing what it will be like” on show at the Golinelli Arts and Sciences Center until 4 February).
Arte Fiera’s graphic design this year is by Studio Andrea Lancellotti. The underlying theme is that of seeing
through the visitor’s eyes and building a personal itinerary regardless of genres, techniques and trends.

WHAT’S NEW

Arte Fiera 2018 builds on last year’s achievements by adding important new features. On 2 and 3 February,
an international meeting designed by Angela Vettese with Clarissa Ricci entitled “Between Exhibition and
Fair: entre chien et loup”, organized with Venice’s IUAV University and under the aegis of Bologna University,
will consider the increasing hybridization between exhibitions and trade shows, a hot topic but one that
remains still largely unexplored, perhaps on account of the continued resistance of historians, critics, and
theorists to relate art and the market. Developed by Clarissa Ricci, Cristina Baldacci and Camilla
Salvaneschi, the meeting will be attended by academics, artists, critics, curators, editors and other art-
system operators. Speakers include names like Terry Smith, Bruce Altshuler and John Rajchman.

The Main Section includes the new Modernity sub-section providing an in-depth look into new areas. The
term ‘Modernity’ is intended in its original etymological sense as a Latin word signifying ‘means’ rather than
                                                                   th
our current concept of ‘modernity’ as modern art, i.e. early 20 century art. 11 booths will have small
personal shows of artists deserving greater attention. The underlying idea of Modernity is to lead visitors
through a line-up of artists who, although from different periods, countries and artistic movements, have
created particularly relevant work, which courageous gallerists were prescient enough to recognize and
show.

The galleries selected and artists exhibited:

Galleria Alessandra Bonomo • Joan Jonas (USA 1936)
Galleria Maurizio Corraini• Giosetta Fioroni (Italy 1932)
Galleria De’ Foscherari • Gianni Piacentino (Italy 1945)
Galleria Umberto di Marino • Eugenio Spinoza (Venezuela 1950)
Galleria Six • Terry Atkinson (United Kingdom, 1939)
Guastalla Centro Arte • Marino Marini (Italy 1901-1980)
Galleria Guidi & Schoen • Olivo Barbieri (Italy 1954)

Nuova Galleria Morone • Maria Lai (Italy 1919-2013)
Prometeogallery • Regina José Galindo (Guatemala, 1974)
Studio Guastalla • Emilio Isgrò (Italy 1937)

Once again the POLIS section reinforces the show’s ties with the city through a series of new initiatives.

POLIS / ARTWORKS – a series of installations in splendid, often little-known venues around the city.
Curated by Angela Vettese, coordinated by Nicolas Ballario, with the collaboration of some of the galleries
exhibiting at Arte Fiera.

POLIS / CINEMA - La comunità che viene is the title of the film selection - curated by Mark Nash and staged
both in the fair grounds and at Bologna’s MAMbo – that looks at the communist and post-communist legacy
of both Bologna and Italy as a whole. Like last year’s exhibition curated by Nash at the Archaeological
Museum, Pierpaolo Pasolini is again the trait d’union of a show that investigates a series of key images from
the past and which still resonate today, giving rise to many unanswered questions and stirring unsolved
issues.

POLIS / SPECIAL PROJECTS: PERFORMING THE GALLERY - curated by Chiara Vecchiarelli - explores
the potential of performance art in our contemporary cultural, political and economic context. The project was
developed together with Galerie, an intangible gallery dealing exclusively with intangible artworks. Galerie
will also be in the fair grounds with a performative version of the booth My Body is My Booth, in which
gallerists will ‘perform’ the works on show.
Running in parallel and facilitated by the artists with work on show will be a series of workshops open to the
public entitled The Intensive Curses. The aim: to demonstrate the close link between the production of
knowledge and value. The Intensive Curses programme will be held both at the fair and at the Collegio
Artistico Venturoli, where it is organized in collaboration with Art City. Like the gallery, the workshops
themselves become a vehicle of artistic expression.

POLIS / BBQ - coordinated by Mia D. Suppiej - is a project that links the work of the Artist Run Spaces with
the No Profit spaces that have sprung up in Bologna in recent years, providing insights into Bologna’s
independent contemporary art scene with a programme of exhibitions, performances and openings.

The innovative PRINTVILLE section, located at the entrance to the trade show, is dedicated to industrially
manufactured artefacts and prints. Curated by Amedeo Martegani of a+mbookstore, Printville has also
extended its reach this year.

There are new features on the digital front as well, with Arte Fiera this year launching its first iOS and
Android App to provide the general Italian and international public with a truly broad overview of the events
at the fair and in town. There’s also a contest open to App users for the best photo taken during the trade
show. More information available on www.artefiera.it.

Finally, some major acquisitions will be made. The Carisbo Foundation has allocated up to 50,000 Euros to
the ‘Arte Fiera Fund’ for the purchase of one or more works to become part of the Art and History Collections
of the Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna Foundation. In addition, the MAST Foundation will be choosing
photographic works dealing with work and industry to add to its collection.

THE SECTIONS

With the exception of Nueva Vista, Arte Fiera 2018 makes no distinction in its exhibition layout between
modern and contemporary art. Sections and genres are presented in an organic mix to provide visitors with a
stimulating series of works from today and yesterday that dialogue in harmony, going beyond now obsolete
lines of demarcation, and encouraging viewers to adopt a new critical approach.

THE AWARDS

PREMIO EUROMOBIL
      th
The 12 edition of the Euromobil Group Under 30 Prize is for a young Italian or foreign artist with work
shown at Arte Fiera. The Prize will be awarded by an expert jury of critics and sector experts on 3 February.
The winner will be invited to ‘interact’ with the collections of Euromobil Group Arte Fiera’s main sponsors.
The 2018 jury is made up of Gaspare, Antonio, Fiorenzo and Giancarlo Lucchetta, Gruppo Euromobil
owners and art collectors; Angela Vettese, Arte Fiera Artistic Director; Beatrice Buscaroli, art critic, Aldo
Colonetti, IED Scientific Director, and designer Cleto Munari.

ANGAMC AWARD
The second edition of the Lifetime Achievement Award of AMGAMC - the National Association of Modern
and Contemporary Art Galleries - acknowledges the career and activity of an ANGAMC affiliated gallerist
who during his/her activity has show exceptional commitment, attaining artistic, human and business
excellence. The 2018 award goes to the Milan gallerist Giorgio Marconi.
The award ceremony will be held on 3 February when ANGAMC Chairman Mauro Stefanini will hand over
the prize. Also attending will be Artistic Director Angela Vettese, Marco Momoli, Arte Fiera Exhibition Director,
and Bruno Corà, Chairman of the Burri Foundation.

#ContemporaryYoung AWARD
Started at Arte Fiera 2015 by the Bologna Young Entrepreneurs group, the #ContemporaryYoung Award is
open to artists under 40 shown at Arte Fiera whose underlying theme is doing and making.
The winner’s artwork will become part of the collection of Confindustria Emilia’s Young Entrepreneurs (Area
Centro). The aim is to create an Association art fund comprising young artists to be built up with each
successive Arte Fiera.

THE CENTRO PORSCHE BOLOGNA PRIZE
The Centro Porsche Bologna Award is offered at Arte Fiera 2018 to support contemporary art and the values
it promotes, highlighting works of excellence that meld tradition and technological innovation. Open to all
artists showing at Arte Fiera 2018, the award acknowledges excellence of creation based - in art as in
engineering mechanics – on form that is born of the requirements of function. The Award gives the winner
the opportunity to hold a personal exhibition at the Bologna Porsche Centre showroom. The winner will be
announced on Sunday, 4 February 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Champagnerie.

THE ROTARY AWARD
Now in its seventh consecutive year, the Bologna Valle del Samoggia Rotary Award is a prize for the most
creative installation at Arte Fiera 2018.
While the award’s aims to promote an appreciation of contemporary art among young people remain
unchanged, collaboration has intensified between the International Rotary District 2072 (Emilia Romagna
and San Marino), the young members of Rotaract Bologna and the Libera Accademia di Studi
Caravaggeschi “Francesco Maria Cardinal del Monte”. The winning gallery and artist and the winner of the
special Andrea Sapone prize will be awarded their prizes at a ceremony to be held at Arte Fiera in Sala
Notturno (Services Centre) on Saturday, 3 February at 6 p.m.

THE CONSULTINVEST AWARD
Consultinvest promotes wider recognition of contemporary art by selecting an artwork of an emerging or
recently discovered artist as a first item in a future collection of the artist’s work. The award is based on
awareness that art is the primary most widespread global language and that the art market is today a market
proper, part of a system made up of public and private collections, auctions, organized groups and
investment funds. The Award comprises the purchase of the winning artwork for a maximum of €10.000. The
Consultinvest Jury includes: Enrico Vaccari, Fund Manager Consultinvest SGR; Angela Vettese, Arte Fiera
Artistic Director; Sonia Raule, collector; Cecilia Matteucci, collector. The winner will be announced on
Saturday 3 February at 1 p.m. at the Champagnerie.

ART CITY Bologna

From 2 to 4 February, 2018 ART CITY Bologna will once again delight the city. This programme of events
and special initiatives promoted by the city authorities in partnership with BolognaFiere is rolled out during
Arte Fiera, with the coordination of the Modern and Contemporary Art Section of the body overseeing
Bologna’s Museums.
       th
This 6 edition of ART CITY Bologna has redefined its format under the new artistic direction of Lorenzo
Balbi. The programme comprises a special project and 10 events – including exhibitions, installations and
performances – exploring premier examples of artistic creativity and looking at how contemporary art
benefits from the contamination of different expressive languages and formats.
The events selected have certain key features in common: they are all curatorial and monographic projects
developed specifically for their particular venue. In fact ART CITY Bologna is first and foremost a project
ideated and implemented by Bologna for Bologna.
On Saturday 3 February, ART CITY White Night will take over the city with hundreds of events and
happenings for a white night of art, unique of its kind in Italy. For the full programme, please go to:
