FISHERMEN CREATE THEIR OWN BRIDGE ACROSS TO THE BRIDGE PYLON Smaller stones have been stripped from the bank to create a bridge across to the pylon.... only visible at low tide. [ This has caused quite a surprise for some kayaks and canoes using the area at high tide when the stones are not visible just under the surface. 1
BUSH STONE CURLEWS NESTING AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS When you come out of PP and pull up to turn right, look at 90 degrees and you might just see two Bush Stone Curlews nesting next to the pedestrian walkway and traffic lights. They have been known to be quite aggressive at certain times of year, taking walkers by surprise as they attempt to cross the highway. A wide wing display is one way in which Bush Stone- curlews try to distract potential predators away from their nests. [Photo by Scott O’Keeffe, from the internet]. RECOMMENDED RESTAURANT/ TAKE AWAY There are about half a dozen Chinese restaurants in Palm Beach. Chinese Smorgasbord Restaurant is highly recommended by residents at Princess Palm. It also has an incredibly extensive menu. It is the last shop down 8th Ave Palm Beach. T: 5534 2388 Lunch Mon to Sat 11.30 to 2.30 Dinner 7 nights 4.30 to 9pm MANGROVE RESERVE A sign has appeared alongside the walkway extolling the benefits of mangroves to the environment. And a rotting plank has been replaced. They missed another one which has serious signs of rot about 50m further along....but only noticeable when you stand on it. 2
PALM BEACH HAIRDRESSER BANS PATRONS WHO HAVE BEEN VACCINATED News outlets reported the unusual case of a hairdresser who has banned patrons who have been vaccinated. The report from 9News: “ When contacted by 9News, the salon's owner, Yazmina Adler, claimed she had heard of women contracting side effects without having received the vaccine. "I guess a lot of people would question that and I think it's like anything, it's like the disease or the virus at the moment – it's spreading somehow and somehow women are reporting side effects when they haven't had the shot," Ms Adler told 9News. There are no verified reports that match Ms Adler's claims.” DRAIN OUTLET AT THE ESTUARY The old circular pipe outlet was replaced some time ago with a new culvert with new stone embankments to prevent erosion. Not visible now is the non-return valve which was installed after flooding rains some years ago, when water came back up the pipes (including to the drain at our roundabout.) 3
If you look carefully you can see the waterproof lining that has been placed under the rocks (left and below right). GOLD COAST RENTAL REAL ESTATE RATES Rent prices for houses has soared by 32 percent on the Gold Coast and 14 percent for units over the past year, according to data from SQM Research. Agents are receiving more than 20 applications per property as weekly rents skyrocket. An influx of cashed-up professionals from Sydney and Melbourne have squeezed the local market, according to tenants and agents, as the mass exodus from Australia's biggest cities continues. WATER PIPES MARKED OUT ON THE LAWN AT THE PARK The Council continues to improve the watering system at the park, with these marks appearing on the grass in early June in preparation for further work. 4
KEEPING THE PARK LOOKING GOOD The Council regularly spreads fertiliser on the lawn near the Dune Café (left) ...... and the paths are swept using brooms, leaf blowers (as below) or machines. MOTHERS AND BABIES GATHER IN THE PARK The park is becoming increasing popular for gatherings. Recently About 20 mothers and new babies gathered one morning for a get together. It was a traffic jam of prams! 5
ANOTHER PET GOES MISSING AND ANOTHER BIG REWARD A trend is developing. Last month we had posters offering a $1,000 reward for the return of their pet dog. This month we have seen the effect of market inflation, with the offer of $5,000 for the return of a pet cat. Next month will it be a $15,000 reward for the return of their pet hamster.....?! [ Also --- So now we know which of these pet owners love their pet the most!] CURRUMBIN STATE SCHOOL CONTINUES TO EXPAND BOATING OPTIONS We have often seen all kinds of water craft from the nearby school using the estuary. A group of students were really enjoying themselves in five motor boats. Now that is a school you want to attend.... DON’T OVERSTAY PARKING AT FOURTH AVE COLES If you haven’t ever read the sign at the entrance to the carpark at Coles on Fourth Ave you should. The Parking Fee is a hefty $77 (!!) if you stay longer than three hours. And there is a parking inspector that roams the carpark on occasion. 6
AMAZING NUMBER OF BRUSH TURKEYS I had to wend my way through 20 birds milling across the pathway in the bush walk. They showed no fear of my presence. It is great to see how well they have bred in the last year or so. LIGHT RAIL CONTROVERSY The disquiet continues over the proposed light rail being planned to go down the centre of the Gold Coast Highway at Palm Beach. All parking on the Gold Coast Hwy will be eliminated, and side streets will become 3 hour parking. And highway businesses are often destroyed during construction because customers cannot access them. The shown notice (left) appeared in our letterboxes demanding that the State Government Transport Minister attend a public meeting to answer questions. NEW ROLLER DOOR FOR SURF RESCUE STORAGE BUILDING A new roller door was installed to the estuary end of the building, where the new ramp was installed so that the Surf Rescue guys can launch their boats and surf skis directly into the water. 8
ELECTRIC UNICYCLE This incredible device came sailing past me at 30kmh! Despite looking like he was in contact with aliens, he was a very likeable guy, here on holiday with his wife. He has owned the electric unicycle for two and half years – so an early adopter! It cost about $2500, and is capable of a range of 100kms. It has a top speed of 50kmh! It takes about an hour and a half to master it, and comes with a blue tooth connection to your phone and earpiece. It has a very low centre of gravity with the motor inside the rim of the wheel. I handled it and you cannot tip it forward or backwards – the trick is keeping it upright as it does tilt to the left and right. You steer by shifting your weight. At 67 the rider is still very active, and just maybe he is in contact with aliens via all the antennas on his helmet! DISREGARDING ‘NO DOGS’ SIGNAGE Dog owners are getting more and more blatant in their disregard for the No Dogs signage. They are now regularly seen walking along the pathway through the bush reserve. At least the dogs are still on a lead, which they often are not in the No Dog area of the mangrove reserve or of course along the length of Palm Beach. Right: note the No Dogs sign in the background 9
