      Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary
Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was
a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came
and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and
his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became
like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know
that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.
Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he
has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you
will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with
fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and
said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.
10
   Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to
Galilee, and there they will see me.”
                                              - Matthew 28:1-10 (English Standard Version)

                                  SONGS
CHRIST IS RISEN (Words and Music by Ed Cash, Keith Getty, and Kristyn Getty, 2012)
How can it be? The One who died has borne our sin through sacrifice,
To conquer ev’ry sting of death; sing, sing hallelujah!
For joy awakes as dawning light when Christ’s disciples lift their eyes;
Alive He stands, their Friend and King; Christ, Christ, He is risen.
   Christ is risen, He is risen indeed!
   Oh, sing hallelujah.
   Join the chorus, sing with the redeemed.
   Christ is risen, He is risen indeed!
Where doubt and darkness once had been, they saw Him and their hearts believed;
But blessed are those who have not seen, yet sing hallelujah.
Once bound by fear, now bold in faith, they preached the truth and pow’r of grace;
And pouring out their lives they gained life, life everlasting.
The pow’r that raised Him from the grave now works in us to powerfully save;
He frees our hearts to live His grace; go tell of His goodness.
He’s alive, He’s alive! Heaven’s gates are opened wide!
He’s alive, He’s alive! Now in heaven glorified!

                                                                          (Continued on next page)
SONGS
CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY
(Words and Music by Charles Wesley, Kurtis Parks, and Samuel Arnold, 2014)

Christ the Lord is ris’n today, alleluia; sons of men and angels say, alleluia.
Raise your joys and triumphs high, alleluia; sing ye heav’ns and earth reply, alleluia.
Lives again our glorious King, alleluia; where, oh death, is now thy sting, alleluia.
Dying once He all doth save, alleluia; where thy victory, oh grave, alleluia.
    He is not dead, He is alive;
    We have this hope, in Jesus Christ.
Love’s redeeming work is done, alleluia; fought the fight, the battle won, alleluia.
Death, in vain, forbids Him rise, alleluia; Christ has opened paradise, alleluia.
Soar we now where Christ has led, alleluia; following our exalted Head, alleluia.
Made like Him, like Him we rise, alleluia; ours the cross, the grave, the skies, alleluia.

CONFES S I ON O F S I N
    5
      This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God
is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him
while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in
the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood
of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive
ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have
not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
                                                   - 1 John 1:5-10 (English Standard Version)

      My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But
if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2
  He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the
whole world.
                                                   - 1 John 2:1-2 (English Standard Version)
SONGS
THE POWER OF THE CROSS (Words and Music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend, 2005)
Oh to see the dawn of the darkest day. Christ on the road to Calvary.
Tried by sinful men, torn and beaten then nailed to a cross of wood.
   This the pow’r of the cross. Christ became sin for us.
   Took the blame, bore the wrath. We stand forgiven at the cross.
Oh to see the pain written on Your face, bearing the awesome weight of sin.
Ev’ry bitter thought, ev’ry evil deed crowning Your bloodstained brow.
Now the daylight flees, now the ground beneath
Quakes as its Maker bows His head.
Curtain torn in two, dead are raised to life. “Finished!” the vict’ry cry.
Oh to see my name written in the wounds, for through Your suff’ring I am free.
Death is crushed to death, life is mine to live won through Your selfless love!
   This the pow’r of the cross Son of God slain for us.
   What a love, what a cost. We stand forgiven at the cross.

NOT IN ME (Words and Music by David L. Ward and Eric Schumacher, 2012)
No list of sins I have not done, no list of virtues I pursue,
No list of those I am not like can earn myself a place with You.
O God! Be merciful to me I am a sinner through and through!
My only hope of righteousness is not in me, but only You.
No humble dress, no fervent prayer, no lifted hands, no tearful song,
No recitation of the truth can justify a single wrong.
My righteousness is Jesus’ life, my debt was paid by Jesus’ death,
My weary load was borne by Him, and He alone can give me rest.
No separation from the world, no work I do, no gift I give,
Can cleanse my conscience, cleanse my hands; I cannot cause my soul to live.
But Jesus died and rose again the pow’r of death is overthrown!
My God is merciful to me and merciful in Christ alone.

SCRIPT UR E
   16
      Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus
had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some
doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on
earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20
   teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am
with you always, to the end of the age.”
                                       - Matthew 28:16-20 (English Standard Version)

REFLECTI ON QU ES T I O N S (taken in part from the Serendipity Study Bible for Groups)

  • When do you find yourself most active in prayer?
  • What answers to prayer have you experienced even as doubt remained in
    your heart?
  • Have you ever prayed that a friend or family member would come to know
    that they are known by God? How has God used your way of life or your
    words to communicate love toward that person who is on your heart?
  • It can be hard to wait upon God in dependent prayer. What difference
    does it make knowing that Jesus intercedes for you at the Father’s right
    hand AND that the Holy Spirit is praying intercession for you when you
    don’t know what or how to pray?
SERMON OUTLINE
                                I Am With You Always
                                       Matthew 28:16-20

 Because Jesus has been raised from the dead, the promise of God’s day after
         day after day presence anchors a life of dependent prayer…
                                  (1 Corinthians 15:12-19; Matthew 28:20b)

 What are some of the contexts within which dependent prayer flourishes?

When doubts surface in the heart... (Matthew 28:16-17)

REFLECTION QUOTES
    12
        Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you
say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection
of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been
raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even
found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he
raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.
16
   For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ
has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then
those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have
hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
                                   - 1 Corinthians 15:12-19 (English Standard Version)

    15
       “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the
Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the
Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor
knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
                                         - John 14:15-17 (English Standard Version)
    7
       Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away,
for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send
him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and
righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in
me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me
no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
                                               - John 16:7-11 (English Standard Version)
READINGS
P R OFES S I ON O F F AI T H: T H E N ICENE CR EED
  The Nicene Creed originated at the Council of Nicea (325), and an expanded form was adopted by the
  Council of Chalcedon (451). It was formulated to answer heresies that denied the Biblical doctrine of the
                                     Trinity and of the person of Christ.

   We believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
     maker of heaven and earth,
     of all things visible and invisible.
   And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
     begotten of his Father before all worlds,
     God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,
     begotten, not made,
     being of one substance with the Father;
     by whom all things were made;
     who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven,
     and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary,
     and was made man;
     and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;
     he suffered and was buried;
     and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures
     and ascended into heaven,
     and is seated at the right hand of the Father;
     and he shall come again, with glory,
     to judge both the living and the dead;
     whose kingdom shall have no end.
   And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,
     who proceeds from the Father and the Son;
     who with the Father and the Son together
     is worshipped and glorified;
     who spoke by the prophets;
     and we believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic church;
     we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;
     and we look for the resurrection of the dead,
     and the life of the world to come. Amen

SONGS
HALLELUJAH! WHAT A SAVIOR (Words and Music by Philip Paul Bliss)
“Man of sorrows!” what a name for the Son of God who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim! Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Bearing shame and scoffing rude, in my place condemned He stood
Sealed my pardon with His blood: Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Guilty, vile and helpless we, spotless Lamb of God was He;
Full atonement! can it be? Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Lifted up was He to die, “It is finished,” was His cry;
Now in heav’n exalted high: Hallelujah, what a Savior!
When He comes, our glorious King, all His ransomed home to bring,
Then anew this song we’ll sing: Hallelujah, what a Savior!
