Two months of intense activity In February – March we had weekly meetings: • Consortium • Preproduction engineering • Transport Frame and Box • Boards Task Force • QA/QC • Ad hoc in response to matters arising All teams have been working full-time, many individuals making exceptional contributions. A big thank you to all! Close collaboration with TC, I&I: Compliance Office, QC … We are in good shape and on track to meet our major milestones 3 3 April 2020 C. Touramanis | DUNE C.C.
APA design • Complete design available • In progress: - Validation of PD wires & connectors at PSL and Ash River • Impacted by COVID-19 situation and measures - Validation of APA integration in TPC at Ash River • Impacted by COVID-19 situation and measures - APA analysis plan and document for FDR, PSL • Work starting in coordination with TC and Compliance Office 4 3 April 2020 C. Touramanis | DUNE C.C.
APA Transport Frame & Box • On track for 60% design review in May/June • Design practically final (Peter Sutcliffe, George Stavrakis, Liverpool) • FEA almost complete (Ang Lee, Fermilab) • Shock absorption suspension specified, waiting for external company final report (Peter) • Handling at SURF understood, final scheme close to sign off (Justin Freitag, Fermilab) • Box design final, allows for APA inspection/testing at intermediate stages of the journey from factory to underground (George) • Documents for review will be ready in April • Many thanks to Olga Beltramello (CERN), Jean-Louis Grenard (CERN), Mariana Zimbru (Compl. Office), Giuseppe Gallo (Fermilab), Dan Wenman (PSL) and others for advice and guidance • Prototype construction, Jeff Nelson (W&M) and testing, Bill Miller (Ash River) to be scheduled depending on COVID-19 situation 5 3 April 2020 C. APA Boards • Task Force active (weekly meetings). Chair: Terry Shaw • Subgroups for mechanical tolerance, voltage, IPC standards for HV trace spacing, hole tolerance and press pins (meetings as required) • Many contributions from PSL (in addition to Andy Laundrie) • HV IPC checks, some redesign (Andy, Anthony Ezeribe, Sebastien Prince): almost there • Mechanical tolerances: a lot more than board thickness; good progress being made • Custom MillMax press-fit pins: Terry in charge Very impressive amount and depth of work done, good progress being made. Huge thank you to the TF members! 13 3 April 2020 C. Touramanis | DUNE C.C.
Production & QA/QC • Consortium working closely with DUNE QA leadership • Weekly meetings • Thanks to Jim Mateyak (Fermilab), Sebastien Prince and Guenette (Harvard), Gwenn Mouster (Lancaster) • Revisiting the whole chain (Physics requirements) – (specifications and tolerances) - (QA/QC) • Gwenn gathering all available documents to compile full set of production and QA/QC procedures • Investigating “digital factory” platform to ensure identical APAs and strict QA adherence in all factories • Examples of new developments: acceptance QC tools & jigs for frame bars, mesh frames (Daresbury, Liverpool, PSL) • Automatic electronic wire tension system advancing well (Harvard) 14 3 April 2020 C. Touramanis | DUNE C.C.
COVID-19 situation • Everybody working form home: design, engineering, review preparations continuing • In touch with many suppliers who are still partially working • On-site hands-on work: - Daresbury, Liverpool workshop: closed - FNAL workshops closed by not affecting APA work - PSL: evolving situation, basically closed - Ash River: continuing with reduced staff; can build on protoDUNE-II volume We are not changing our schedules for now on the assumption that the lockdowns will create a (small) global shift to the whole project 15 3 April 2020 C. Touramanis | DUNE C.C.
Delivering for ProtoDUNE-II and FD 1 • Based on existing schedule: - ProtoDUNE-II requires 4 APAs in late 2021: we can deliver that even with a few months lost due to COVID-19 - With the full complement of UK and US factories we are on track to have 150 APAs for FD 1 by mid-2024 - With all “money in the bank” in the UK we will deliver 152 APAs by May 2027 (25 APAs / calendar year at full production) We don’t see any reasons at this point to change our schedule and milestones 16 3 April 2020 C. Opportunities for further contributions • We don’t have uncovered items in our production plan • There will be opportunities for contributions in QA, integration, installation, operations and analysis in ProtoDUNE-II • The same will be true at SURF for the Far Detector modules 18 3 April 2020 C. Touramanis | DUNE C.C.
Summary • A lot of very impressive progress and convergence in the last two months • A lot still to be done but I am confident that we will be having the planned reviews this summer and the first APAs before the end of the calendar year • We see no show stoppers in our plans A very special thank you from myself and the whole consortium to Alberto Marchionni for his outstanding dedication and attention to every detail! 19 3 April 2020 C.
