SHAHINTAB TO COACH IRAN’S MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM
T he Islamic Republic of Iran Basketball Federation confirmed on
September 29 that coach Mehran Shahintab will lead the men’s
national team at the Olympic Games next July.

Shahintab, 54, guided the team through a tough qualifying campaign
to Tokyo, where Iran’s men’s team will be making their third appear-
ance in Olympic history following London 1948 and Beijing 2008.

Iran lost all five games in Beijing and finished 11th out of 12 teams but
the federation president, Ramin Tabatabaei, says the Persians are
aiming to qualify for the quarter-finals in Tokyo for the first time ever.

At the Tokyo Olympics, 12 teams will be divided into three groups of
four. The top two teams in each of the three groups will qualify for the
last eight, along with the two best third-placed teams.

“Our first goal is to advance to the next phase since we want to be
among the world’s top eight teams,” Tabatabaei told the Tehran Times. Iran’s coach Mehran Shahintab. (Photo: Tehran Times)
