ALDI is a privately held, family–owned discount grocery chain based in Germany. The company
was founded by the Albrecht brothers in 1946 and split into two separate groups in 1960, ALDI
Nord (headquartered in Essen) and ALDI Sud (headquartered in Mulheim). The name ALDI was
introduced in 1962, as an abbreviation for Albrecht Diskont.

The ALDI group operates over 10,000 stores worldwide in 20 countries. ALDI made its debut
in the United States in Iowa in 1976, and it now has over 1,800 stores in 35 US states. The
German chain has experienced rapid expansion over the last few decades due to its exclusive
branding, self service model and exceptional taste and quality. More than 40 million customers
shop at ALDI each month.

In June of 2017, ALDI announced a $5.3 billion plan to remodel its existing 1,800+ US stores
and open 700 new ones. The plan called for an expansion of the chain to over 2,500 stores by
2022, putting ALDI as the third largest grocer in the US, behind Walmart and Kroger.

ALDI Sud operates as ALDI and ALDI Nord as Trader Joe’s.
