Any level of the game: Olympics, world championships, Tim Hortons Brier, school, kids …. the man just loves the game and he loves helping players become the best they can. Yes, he’s best known as the coach for Kevin Martin and Brad Gushue, skips who between them have won two Olympic gold medals, two world championships and six Brier titles. But Owchar’s contribution to curling goes far deeper than the elite level. His resume includes an astonishing 34 college conference championships and two national college titles with Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, 24 Grand Slam of Curling titles and 14 provincial men’s championships. It is a resume that earned him induc- tion this week into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame. His appearance once prompted veteran curler Hec Gervais to note: “With a shave and two haircuts, he’d be all right.” Gowsell and mates roamed the countryside in a beat-up Chrysler van, in search of small fortune, if not fame. One stop was in Saska- toon, where they met Larry McGrath in the final. With scant time to eat pre-match, Gowsell ordered pizza, which arrived during the final. “The guy in the little paper hat comes out there and I pay him for a couple extra-large specials, deluxe with everything on ’em. Except anchovies,” Gowsell recalled. “We were hungry.” Gowsell won when his annoyed foe’s last-rock draw came up short. Legend has it that, upon inspection, McGrath discovered a green olive lodged under his stone. Moral of the story: Hold the anchovies, but never the olives. Thanks to our Friends!
