On TripAdvisor Not Your Standard Cinema! I genuinely enjoy The Vic Theatre. This small one-auditorium cinema is run by the Victoria Film Festival and operates on a volunteer basis. As such, it functions as the central hub for film festival movies, sing-alongs, independent films (including art deco), documentaries and foreign films. In some respects, I draw strong parallels between The Vic and The Rio because the latter also does much the same, except in Vancouver. While The Vic does show the occasional Hollywood hit, the emphasis is clearly on film festival and independent movies – and that’s something I appreciate 100 times over because it helps to set The Vic apart from virtually everybody else in the Greater Victoria area. And on a related note, The Vic also has the privilege of showing “unrated” films; however, to watch these, a $2 annual membership is required. Believe me, it’s money well spent! I mean, where else in Victoria can you view films like Tickled, Kedi or Brigsby Bear? Beyond the unique (and sometimes outright strange) film offerings, the licensed concession stand is also a treat. You can get Vic Theatre swag (we got a mug!), fresh popcorn made with coconut oil, alcoholic beverages, local/independent soda (Mmm…Sparkmouth!) and even a cheese plate to enjoy while watching your movie. Thus, The Vic provides moviegoers with an experience that is at once simple yet elevated. 39
