Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda has been awarded BREEAM certification, the world's
leading sustainability assessment method for master-planning projects, infrastructure
and buildings. BREEAM is recognized for requiring thorough and comprehensive
assessments that take into account a wide range of factors, including energy efficiency,
waste recovery, water management, materials, access to sustainable transportation,
and occupant and worker health and wellbeing. Here's an overview of the village's
environmental and wellness initiatives:
• No single-use plastics are used at the resort
• All coffee and cocoa products are locally grown in partnership with local farmers
• Staff uniforms are made from recycled plastic bottles
• Language, vocational and hospitality training is offered to more than 900 locals
through a number of different programs
• Solar panels with a total surface area of 4,180 square metres are used to generate
renewable energy in the village
• More than 30,000 new plants are kept in an on-site nursery, and more than 2,000
trees were preserved or replanted during the construction of the resort

Carbon offsetting
We're pleased to offer travellers the opportunity to voluntarily offset the greenhouse
gases generated by their air travel.
If desired, participants can now purchase carbon offsets, with a 25% mark-up by
Cameleo. Compensation CO2 Québec has been providing carbon offset service since
2011. This cooperative buys, delivers, plants and tracks trees to compensate for GHG
emissions. By purchasing trees through them, participants can help create new forests
and fight climate change. Compensation CO2 Québec plants trees on land owned by
people and organizations that are committed to afforestation, monitors the trees for
5 years after planting, and runs wood management programs to maximize the carbon
capture period. Planting a tree costs $3.00 (plus tax) and each one captures 182 kg of
carbon dioxide.
Offsetting the emissions associated with travelling to our event in the Dominican Republic
has been assessed at 3 trees or $9, based on round-trip travel in economy class. Business
