MEET ZAC Zac has more than a decade of experience in construction after studying an apprenticeship at Preston’s College. Wanting to share his extensive technical skills, he completed his Certificate in Education and now teaches the next generation of aspiring bricklayers. “I was nervous about the course as I wasn’t the most academic but I had every confidence in my technical knowledge and experience and wanted to share my expertise with the next generation. My tutor provided full support throughout my studies, giving me confidence in myself and my ability to deliver lessons. Good teachers make a lasting impact on the lives of their learners, which is why I came back to study at Preston’s College, as I had a fantastic experience as a school leaver. I am now in the final year of my second degree with Preston’s College, awarded by The University of Derby. I am hoping to top up, with a BA (Hons) degree next year and then progress onto a Master’s Degree in Education.” 25
CONSTRUCTION The construction industry is essential for our local economy and has been identified as a priority sector for Lancashire. Currently, there is a huge skills shortage with the industry being placed in the top five sectors requiring employees, due to sector growth from 2018 - 2028. This high demand for skilled people is also reflected in the generous starting salaries, with university graduates taking home an average salary per year of over £29,000 and a Site Manager, an average of over £49,000 per year. Right on our doorstep, the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal is investing more than £434 million, creating 20,000 new jobs and building 17,000 new homes to improve the county. Construction companies across Lancashire continue to seek highly skilled people to fill a range of in demand roles. For those looking to start out, we offer a selection of Level 1 Certificates and Diplomas, in everything from Bricklaying to Wall and Floor Tiling – ideal for those looking to develop their DIY skills further or study the basics of a trade alongside a full-time job. These courses are also ideal for those looking to take their first steps onto a complete career change. For those already working in the sector, the Construction department, housed in the purpose built Eric Wright Learning Centre, offers Level 2 Certificates and Diplomas, Level 3 and 4 NVQs and a range of HNC qualifications, alongside our brand new Access to Construction; the gateway to an array of professional careers within this growing sector for those looking to return to education and progress onto degree level study. COUNSELLING Counsellors play a crucial role in improving the health and wellbeing of our society. The Government is investing an additional £1 billion in 2020/21 to mental health services , aiming to ensure that one million more people have access to high quality care. Working in confidential settings, counsellors work with a variety of people across a range of often challenging and complex issues. Ensuring practitioners have the self-reflection and resilience to support people as they work through these issues is a common thread throughout all of the counselling courses at Preston’s College, from Level 2 to BSc (Hons). Counselling Services can be found in a variety of settings including schools, universities, colleges, GP surgeries, hospitals, in the workplace, addiction agencies, disability support groups and private practice. Sometimes counsellors will have dual roles, such as a Nurse, Teacher or Advice Worker, meaning counselling can often be a second career for many. For those looking to change career, you will begin your studies at Level 2 with opportunities, upon successful completion, to progress onto Level 3 and Level 4 studies, whilst those already employed in the sector, looking to take their education to a higher level, will find the Foundation degree and BSc (Hons) Top-Up degree the ideal opportunity to achieve qualifications which reflect experience, skill level and already held sector based knowledge. 28
