VOLUME 5 JUNE 2020 | PAGE 4 NORTH AYRSHIRE COUNCIL Open Data Project In 2019, North Ayrshire Library and Information Service secured one year’s Public Libraries Improvement Funding from the Scottish Government, administered by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) to provide opportunities for people to learn to access, champion and support the further use of open data through library services. Open Data is non-personal and non-commercially sensitive information, freely available via the internet for anyone to access and reuse. By making information ‘open’ individuals can understand more about services, gain insight into their own communities and contribute to future design and delivery. North Ayrshire Council has its own Open Data Portal which contains information about North Ayrshire and council services. Alison Chalmers came in to post in July 2019 as our Library Development Officer specialising in open data and community engagement. She worked with local communities on the types of information they would like on the site and the how it should be displayed. We brought together council staff and local people in libraries to look at relevant open data locally and nationally. The project has looked at recycling, library management systems, breast feeding venues, accessibility of websites, air quality and worked together to affect change using open data by working on mutually beneficial solutions. The portal now has new data sets and other open data resources and local people have a greater understanding of open data and how to access it. For more information on the project, please contact alisonchalmers@north-ayrshire.gov.uk Alison Chalmers Library Development Officer (Open Data)
