The 2021 Abbotsford Music Festival is dedicated to the memory of Beth Nickel Gifted performer, skilled teacher, valued colleague, trusted friend; and a tireless leader of the festival. Abbotsford Music Festival 2021 4
BETH LYNETTE NICKEL (SCHAUFELE) Oct. 22, 1979 – Feb. 2, 2021 Beth passed away peacefully with her husband and mother at her side. She had a short illness that ended a life most noted in the community for her exceptional viola music skills. She performed in many orchestras and ensembles around the lower mainland and Vancouver and contributed greatly to the musical culture of Abbotsford. She was a noted music teacher, teaching privately but also involved in the Bakerview Music Academy. She headed up the Abbotsford Music Festival for many years and was a member of the BC Registered Music Teachers' Associations Abbotsford Branch. In addition to her music involvements she was also active in the South Poplar School PAC, serving as president at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband Joel Nickel whom she met while they studied at UBC. They were married August 4, 2002. They have 3 children: Elijah, Katie, and Ethan. Beth leaves her parents, Ron and Leila Schaufele of Bow Island, Alberta and her parents-in-law, David and Ruth Nickel of Abbotsford to cherish her memory. She also leaves behind many siblings: Ronelle (Nigel Boehm) Schaufele, Clark (Katherine Dowling) Schaufele, Laurence (Monique Bishun) Schaufele, Alex Schaufele, and Graham Schaufele, Graham (Sharon) Nickel, Clayton (Delayne) Nickel, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service was held on February 10th and and expanded tribute can be viewed at https://www.wiebeandjeskefh.com/obituary/beth-nickel/ . A memorial concert and endowment fund have been created in Beth’s honour. The concert can be viewed free on YouTube (search “Beth Nickel Memorial Concert”) or https://youtu.be/SlLPK-X8P_4 . Marking will designate first, second and third place winners allowing for tied placement as needed. Strings - List B Sonatas, Ensembles The adjudicators will select class and award winners as well as recommend performers for the Honours Concert at the conclusion of the Festival. The adjudicator’s decision is final: the adjudicator will not enter into any discussion with teachers, students, or parents regarding his/her decisions. Teachers will be notified if any of their student(s) that will have their videos included in the Honours Concert. It is the responsibility of the teacher to contact their student(s). AWARDS CEREMONY & HONOURS CONCERT Trophies, scholarships and awards will be awarded at the Award Ceremony & Honours Concert Saturday - May 29, 2021 - (Pre-Recorded) TROPHY RETURNS Trophies are the property of the Abbotsford Music Festival and are to be competed for annually. Winners MUST return trophies in the same condition as presented. TROPHIES WON IN 2020 MUST BE RETURNED BY APRIL 1, 2022. Each teacher is responsible for collecting the trophies won by their students. Please return trophies to your teacher. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: • Can we change our piece or pieces? No • Can we change our scheduled time? No • How are the winners decided? By the Adjudicators • How do we find out if we have won an award? The Festival Committee will have a meeting. To be eligible for awards - students must attend the adjudication class. 3. All particulars with regard to the timing and order of the competition will appear in the official Program. It is the responsibility of each competitor to know the time and date that he or she has to be adjudicated as scheduled in the Program, and to arrive AT LEAST 5 MINUTES BEFORE THE SESSION BEGINS. 4. Registered musical selections may not be changed at any time. ANY complaints and protests must be made IN WRITING to the Festival Committee 5. Meet our Adjudicators Elizabeth McKee - Piano Bernard Duerksen - Piano Elizabeth began piano lessons at the Mr. Duerksen’s training includes studies with pianists, age of six with her grandmother.
