Academic Year 2021-2022 Upper Sixth Curriculum
Upper Sixth Curriculum: Introduction The long term curriculum plans present an overview of the topics covered each half term. They also provide information on the nature of the assessments and offer suggestions on extra resources that can be used to support learning. It is important to emphasise that these plans are working documents and departments actively use them as a guide to plan the teaching and assessments throughout the year. However, departments are also flexible enough to respond to the needs of the learners.
Upper Sixth Curriculum: Introduction by Head of Sixth Form The transition between Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth is undoubtedly one of the most exciting transition points in your son’s / daughter’s education. Whilst exciting, it can also be slightly daunting and so this information is designed to support this process. This guide contains useful information outlining the full specification for each subject and the period of the year that your son / daughter should expect to be covering this material. There are also links to full specifications at the top of each page and these should be helpful in guiding you towards additional resources from the examination boards. In addition to information from the examination boards, please also see some guidance below regarding other important topics: Homework For every hour of learning in school, the expectation is that students will have an hour of homework to accompany this. This will not always be guided learning but may involve students reading around the topic they are currently studying or completing past paper questions to support their understanding. Unlike in previous years, there is also not a set homework timetable and teachers are able to set work at the necessary point. This will mean that students will need to organise and plan their free time accordingly, but there will be support with this as part of the PSHE curriculum. Study Periods Your son / daughter will have a number of study periods on their timetable. They should be using these to complete work and it is important that they get into good habits with these early in their Sixth Form journey. Time spent working in school will enable students to stretch themselves even further at home, rather than being simply used to complete their homework. UCAS / Apprenticeships The first term of the school year is a busy one with university and apprenticeship applications alongside your son / daughter’s academic timetable. It is important that they work diligently to ensure that they are able to keep on top of a range of competing demands. The rough deadlines are outlined below: - Oxbridge / Medicine / Veterinary Medicine – 15th October - Final UCAS Deadline – 5th January - Apprenticeships – Vary (but usually late September to January) Reward and Recognition We appreciate that students will be working harder at this stage of their education than at any previous stage and so we have a range of systems to recognise this hard work. Merits, Benes, Postcards, Vouchers, and other rewards can be awarded for diligence and progress. Concerns From time to time, it may be necessary to raise a concern with you as parents. This can be done by a teacher, your son / daughter’s tutor, or by the Head of Sixth Form. This is designed to highlight an area for improvement and we will work with you and your son / daughter to support and resolve any concern. If you have a concern, your first port of call should be your son / daughter’s tutor. They see all students in their tutor group twice a day and will get to know them very well. It is also important that you develop a good working relationship with them as it is important that we are able to work together to ensure that your son / daughter is able to reach and further their potential. Mr John Maclean Head of Sixth Form
