A word from our Vice Principal, Mrs. Moxam Welcome back Portage View Panthers! We hope you enjoyed a well-deserved break where you were able to spend time doing all things that bring you joy...and with those who you are most excited to spend time with. We begin 2022 recharged with enthusiasm and hope for a wonderful new year! The spirit of giving is alive and well here at Portage View. The December gift gala was a huge success. We had an incredible outpouring of donations which allowed our Panther students to shop and enjoy the season of giving! It was an absolute treat to watch the children bounce through the halls with their wrapped treasures - all smiles! Thank you to our staff and students who made this wonderful event happen! At Portage View there are numerous ways that our families can find out about all of the exciting activities that are happening around our school. Please log onto our website www.por.scdsb.on.ca, follow us on Twitter @portageview or @pawspvpstoread and checkout our monthly newsletter. Another way to connect is through our schoolboard website at www.scdsb.on.ca for further information. Our classroom teachers also have a variety of ways to communicate with home. Please be sure to establish this connection as it is most important that the classroom teacher is the first line of communication. Our Portage View School Council is a great way to stay connected to the school community. If you have any interest in joining our monthly virtual meetings, please send an email to our office and request the link. Finally, again, please make every effort to have your child arrive at school on time (9:08 am). Over the month of November we had over 550 late students at Portage View and sadly, December’s late arrivals were higher. Punctuality is key to your child’s success and safety is our first priority. For the safety of all our students, please start the day at 9:08 … thankyou. Wishing you all the best in health and happiness for 2022. “Life's not about expecting, hoping and wishing, it's about doing, being and becoming."

Happy New Year from the I-Zone!! Each New Year, resolutions are made and new initiatives begin. More time for reading great books is always at the top of my list. Did you know that if we read just ONE book a day to a child, they will have read 1825 books by their 5th birthday? Book Talks Our intermediate students from Mr. Schweitzer and Mr. Szczokin’s classes have been promoting picture books by creating Book Talks and sharing them with some of our Panther Cubs in grades three and four. These Book Talks have been recorded and can be accessed using a QR code. But that’s not all… Mr. Urquhart’s grade six students created models representing a picture book. Our primary panthers were then invited to visit the i-Zone and use their inferencing skills to determine what book character would live in the model that was created. Take a look at the pictures and see if you can guess which character lives in these structures? Forest of Reading The Forest of Reading® books arrived this week and that means our book clubs can begin in January. This program highlights a variety of books written by Canadian authors and is sure to get everyone excited about reading. The Blue Spruce books will be shared with our primary students and our intermediate students will be invited to join the Red Maple book club when we return to school in January. The program ends with voting (at the school level and across the province) to decide which book is the best of the ten that have been nominated! A special thank you to our school council who support this program each year. Hour of Code Many of our classes participated in the Hour of Code during the week of December 6-12th. The Hour of Code is an event established to introduce computer programming to students all over the world. Interested in finding out more about coding check out http://code.org/. Our primary students have been learning about coding using the Kodable app on our iPads. These coding skills can also be accessed through the Kodable website. Some of our junior and intermediate students have been working with a block-based programming language called Scratch. This website provides opportunities for students to explore, create, and share coding ideas. Here is a great video that highlights the importance of technology in our lives and provides a small explanation as to why coding is now taught as part of the math curriculum at school (especially during a global pandemic) - Hour of Code Follow the i-Zone on Twitter @pawspvpstoread
Book Care “Oh the weather outside is frightful, and our books are so delightful…” Just a reminder that winter months can be very wet and our books are easily damaged when they come in contact with moisture. Please remind your child to keep our library books protected when they are transporting them to and from school. i-Zone Ambassadors Mrs. Raycraft would like to thank the i-Zone ambassadors for all of their help shelving books and keeping the i-Zone organized! PANTHERS TAKE ACTION gift gala After having to cancel our Gift Gala in 2020, we were determined to bring back is wonderful tradition in style for 2021! The question became how? Our Gift Gala is dependent on wonderful volunteers, and we still can't have volunteers in our school....what would we do? Well, a sprinkle of holiday magic, and through the determination of some very special people, a plan was hatched! Mrs. Raycraft volunteered the library as a space to make the magic happen. Madame Lanoe's class was looking for a project that would help them to make a difference in their community.....and Mrs. Dimou was crossing her fingers that it would all come together! Many hands make light work, and that saying has never been more true. The donations began to flow in....once again, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of the Portage View community! Beautiful Christmas ornaments, funky sox, winter scarves...you name it, we probably sold it! Our Panthers were delighted to be able to go shopping for their families and to have their presents wrapped up by some very special helpers! We cannot thank the students of Madame Lanoe's class enough. Running the Gift Gala takes a lot of energy, and they kept up their holiday spirits throughout the entire week of the Gala. Our Gala supports Youth Haven's Boxes of Hope fundraiser. Each Box of Hope costs $50. Our Gift Gala raised $1110, plus our Staff Silent Auction raised $590, for a total of $1700, enough to sponsor 34 Boxes of Hope! Thank you to everyone who was able to support our Gift Gala through donating items or providing a monetary donation!
