about About the Sanctuary Exquisite beauty and unsurpassed Zoom in or out conservation significance. The Santuário Bravio de Vilanculos (the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary) is View on Google Maps located on the Mozambican coast adjacent to the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park. Established in 2002 by the Mozambican government, the 42 000 hectare coastal and marine protected area has been entrusted to a private body to develop and manage: the perfect example of cooperation between government, private investors, and local communities. 42 000 COASTAL & HECTARE MARINE PROTECTED AREA The Sanctuary’s focus is on sustainable nature conservation, low density eco-tourism, and the support and upliftment of the local people. Features Features climate, access and services The Sanctuary enjoys balmy temperatures all year round due to its tropical climate and summer rainfall pattern. While proper precautions should be taken throughout Mozambique, The Sanctuary’s remote location means it has an extremely low malaria risk The Sanctuary is reached by boat from nearby Vilanculos, which can be accessed by road or by air. International flights arrive in Vilanculos daily, and it is approximately two days’ drive from the South African border. Vilanculos provides visitors with a range of services The Sanctuary itself offers a small supply store and amenities, including: providing essentials such as fuel, gas, cleaning • A private clinic; goods, maintenance supplies, and other basic • Banks, supermarkets, hardware stores, and amenities. Features Features leisure activities With its naturally clear and unpolluted waters, and immense biodiversity, the Sanctuary caters to both relaxation and excitement. • Take to the water with boating and watersports, including skiing, kayaking, tubing, stand-up paddling, and sailing; • Dive beneath the waves to the secret world of the reefs with scuba diving and snorkelling, and maybe catch a glimpse of the critically endangered dugong and Indian Ocean humpback dolphin; • Enjoy spectacular birding, with over 300 identified species including rare migratory wader and tern species; 300 IDENTIFIED OVER BIRD SPECIES • Explore the natural environment with game drives, hikes, trail runs, and walks through a mosaic of habitats from grasslands to lakes, pans and forests; • Observe game in its natural habitat, including blue wildebeest, zebra, kudu, nyala, eland, sable, suni, grey duiker, and bushbuck; and • Fish offshore for a variety of game fish, including yellowfin tuna and billfish.
community Community upliftment and welfare Community development is at the heart of the Sanctuary’s mission and success, making investment in the Sanctuary synonymous with investment in the underprivileged local people of the region. development Development infrastructure and investment The Sanctuary’s operational funds are generated by annual levies paid by its members. In addition to ongoing maintenance, provision of services, upliftment of local communities, and conservation, the Sanctuary has also has invested significantly into infrastructure development. Over the past 18 years, 20 twelve-bed private holiday homes and 2 commercial lodges have been built, as well as the infrastructure network needed to maintain them.
