AIRSCAPE | 15During Zimbabwe’s tumultuous years, mostly marred by political
and social instability, musician Oliver Mtukudzi, was one of the
few constants and cultural symbol of hope. Known to his fans
the world over as “Tuku” or “The Man With The Talking Guitar”,
Mtukudzi met his end at the age of 66, on Wednesday, 23 January
2019. Ironically enough, he took his last breath on the same day
as his late friend jazz legend Hugh Masekela who passed on last
year.
Mtukudzi finally succumbed to diabetes at Avenues Clinic
in Harare, following a long battle with the disease. Outside
of making music, he was an activist, philanthropist, UNICEF
Goodwill Ambassador for Southern Africa and businessman. But
his music, naturally, overshadowed all these roles.
“Tuku music”, as his fans affectionately dubbed his unique sound,
is a medley of mbira, mbaqanga, jit and the Korekore drum,
all of which resulted in a worldly feel-good sound. In essence,
Mtukudzi’s sound had the special knack of getting people on
their feet, even when they didn’t understand his vernac lyrics.
For a life that we all feel was cut abruptly, Mtukudzi had blessed
his fans with a whopping 67 albums in his 44-year career.
He officially launched his music career with his 1975 debut
single. His career started soaring just after Zimbawe gained its

hoped people would learn a thing or two from it. Yet, what he was
probably oblivious to was that his music had been teaching and

One of his popular singles, Todii (What Shall We do?), unpacks
the HIV/AIDS scourge in comunnities and casts a spotlight on the
powers for being reluctant to help. In Neria, another firm favourite
and a soundtrack title of a movie with a similar name, Mtukudzi
tells the story of a widow at war with the many forms of patriarchy.
Judging by how his music united nations in song, one would
assume that Mtukudzi had studied this craft. Yet, this couldn’t be
further from the truth. His guitar skills were self-taught, he once
shared. “I looked for a sound the guitar couldn’t make in a guitar
– that is how I learned to play. Professional guitarists at the time
use to laugh at me. I used to look for a mbira (music instrument)
on the guitar strings. I’ve always been experimental. But it was a
blessing in disguise because I went on to pioneer a sound that
was later labelled Tuku music,” he once explained in an interview.
The husky-voiced Mtukudzi was the eldest in a family of seven
siblings.
