We are blessed in countless ways from friends, volunteers and numerous donors. We are pleased to announce that with a generous donation, we were finally able to upgrade to a digital X-ray. This new X-ray has numerous features that allow us to take better X-rays with the ability to send these images to doctors. Thank you to “Bubba” with Charles Hood X-ray for your excellent customer service and for making this happen so seamlessly. A wrapped Toyota Tundra was donated to the Humane Society of Marion County at DeLuca Toyota. The pickup truck replaces a Humane Society of Marion County Toyota Tacoma that was being used by the no-kill shelter and was totaled recently. Owner Frank DeLuca took $10,000 off the price of the Tundra for the Humane Society and offered it to them for $5,000. Then, Bill and Debbie Browder donated the remaining $5,000 so that the Tundra could be fully donated. Thank you to all that donated to make this happen. left to right: Frank Deluca, Debbie Browder, Mary Wrye Rutt and Bill Browder. Dr. Jami McGregor VMD! We are elated to announce that the wonderful Dr. McGregor is blessing us with her presence here at the Humane Society of Marion County. She is an absolute gem of a veterinarian who volunteered countless hours to the HSMC in the past. Her compassion for helping animals in need recently brought her out of retirement to return to us. Dr. McGregor graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991 and is a lover of all animals. She brings many years of experience to the HSMC and has overflowing talent and passion for the care of our shelter pets and the team around her. She is a true joy to work with and we are so happy to have her back. Shortly after her return she graciously took a pup into her care that was desperately struggling. This poor pup was surrendered to us after it was hit by a car and critically injured. During the incident it suffered a broken leg and after medical evaluation it was found to be heartworm positive. Dr. McGregor's nurturing touch and knowledgeable care has aided this dear pup to begin on the road to a successful and speedy recovery. Thank you kindly for always extending a helping hand to the animals that need us most. We are so glad to have you back! 2021 will be an awesome year for all the animals at the HSMC. We have many new projects to enhance their temporary stay here until their forever homes find them. With the blessings from a donor we will be installing a splash pad and enrichment center play park. Along with the donated services of Tony Azevedo of Artec Landscaping! He will be designing the area located on the west side of the building. In addition to the new 4550 sq ft clinic, this play area and splash park was a dream of a very special donor. She also provided the new digital X-ray machine. This donor has made it her passion to make the animal’s stay at the HSMC as special as possible. She does not want any recognition; she just wants the animals to be loved and happy while they stay here. In loving memory of Petunia, Millie and Elmo, the HSMC continues to grow and improve the quality of the care provided for them. We can never thank her and the other donors enough who love helping animals. We live in a beautiful world that is filled with more good than bad, more joys than sorrow, more friends than enemies...Sara Cleary Hamilton County's indoor kennels flooded with six dogs inside. They put sweaters on the dogs and moved them to the outside kennels where temps were in the low 30s. A ton of emails and messages were sent, calls were made, and at the end of the day, the dogs are safe and warm and the heroes who answered our pleas look like this: Thank you New Hope for making room for all six dogs. This was not a group of fluffies, puppies, or scruffies. They are big dogs with no vetting, three of which are heartworm positive, one of which is a senior. These two rescues will split the six dogs. My favorite - the senior boy, is going to New Hope. Thank you to everyone at the HSMC. There was no hesitation to offer help when we reached out about transport. Two awesome ladies, Destynee and Fantasheia, drove the HSMC van to meet the dogs in Gainesville and went on their way to New Smyrna Beach to drop them off with Jade at SE Volusia Humane Society. Last but not least, thank you to all who pledged to help get the six dogs spayed/neutered and vaccinated. You stepped up for these sweet souls and I can't thank you enough. It is because of your help that rescues can continue to commit to these dogs. Terry “TJ” Franzen

In November, a paralyzed cat was found abandoned at our front gate. We named her Graceland. She had been shot with a BB gun, and two pellets remained lodged near her spine. Vet staff decided it was safer to leave the pellets than remove them because of the proximity to her spinal cord. Graceland was sent to the Petco Adoption Center as a special needs cat, where one of the volunteers fell in love with her and took her home, massaging her legs daily. And then...Graceland began to walk! She can now jump on window seats, beds, stools, and counters all by herself. She is the true definition of a survivor! Passy and Rattle were found wandering in August 2020. They were terrified and spent most of their time hiding under blankets and hissing. After several weeks, the Petco team took up the challenge of socializing this bonded pair. For the first week, they were fed under the blankets. Then one day an eye appeared, then a paw, and then we heard a purr. In early November, they found their forever home. Bouchon was found inside the wall at the Magnolia Bakery by one of our volunteers. She weighed a little over a pound but had a huge tummy. After multiple treatments and tests trying to determine what was wrong, we came to the conclusion that she might have FIP, a fatal condition, or….that she might grow into her tummy. We placed her in foster care, where she has blossomed! At eight months old, she still weighs less than five pounds, but she is growing into her tummy!
You will probably remember our story on Chills. The amazing Sara Cleary reached out to us on the 12th of September and arranged transportation for this very special case. Upon investigation of this dear furbaby’s wounds, it was seen that he was shot with buckshot. X-rays show that the buckshot scattered through the furbaby’s two front legs causing numerous bones to fragment. Emergency surgery was performed upon his arrival at the HSMC to remove the scattered buckshot. We can't thank BluePearl Pet Hospital Gainesville enough for helping this amazingly sweet boy. The surgery was successful and he returned safely to the Humane Society of Marion County. A big THANK YOU to everyone who is following this sweet boy’s journey and all who have donated to his cause. He stayed overnight at BluePearl Pet Hospital Gainesville and Dr.Herman performed his surgery to repair his right leg. They placed a plate and pins in his leg to stabilize it and once he is recovered from the surgery they will be reevaluating the left leg. This poor baby has been through so much recently. The RECOVERY process for this dear youngster was long, complex, and costly. Chills has made an amazing recoveryHSMC staff and is full weight bearing on his legs. We can’t wait to show him what unconditional love feels like and see him completely healed with his forever home. Please stop by to visit Chills, he is available for Thomas & family adoption. Just as you’ll protect yourself with a warm coat, hat, and gloves when you head outdoors, your pets will need the extra protection too! Though they may have furry coats, animals are by no means immune to dangerously cold temperatures. Even rabbits, cats, and dogs that typically live outdoors need extra assistance keeping warm as temperatures drop to winter lows. 5 steps to keep animals safe during this cold winter weather: If possible, bring pets or feral cats that you’re familiar with indoors to a garage or enclosed building. Bundle up your pups in a jacket or sweater during their walk, especially if their coat is made of hair (vs. fur) Before you start your engine, look under and pound on your vehicle’s hood to wake a napping cat trying to keep warm. Never leave your pet alone inside your vehicle, which won’t stay warm for long after your engine has been turned off. If your pet MUST remain outdoors, make sure that they are in a winter-friendly shelter that has the following components: three-sided enclosure, stands off the ground, contains generous amounts of bedding, and plenty of (un-frozen!) drinking water. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. If you’re concerned about a neighborhood animal outdoors in the cold, be sure to contact your local animal control office or authorities.
