THE COURIER A Monthly Publication of The Inter-Faith Chapel A House of Prayer for AH People From the desk of Rev. Dr. Woodie Rea We are beginning to emerge following a year like no other! We have experienced quarantine and endured reduced activities. It has felt like we have been hibernating and waiting for time to run its course until we could surface once again. We are begimiing to come out of this chrysalis we have been living in. Society seems to be waking up, rubbing the sleep from its eyes, and stretching its arms to return to what will no doubt be a "new normal" rather than the old "familiar normal" we were once used to. And right on schedule with our emerging, comes the emerging of the cicadas! It is easy to draw comparisons between our emergence from nearly seventeen months of dormancy and the emergence of the seventeen year cicadas! There are several similarities to consider, and even a few things we can learn from these warmth loving, community loving, music loving insects! Following an extended period of being in confinement, cicadas make a vibration to signal one another and then, all together, they rise up from the ground. In unity, they create a powerful harmonic buzz that is for the advantage of the whole community and not for the individual alone. The first lesson we might consider then, is that when we all work together on the ground level, communication, cooperation, and teamwork bring higher success than working alone. Though they can be a nuisance, the cicadas pose no threat to us or our plants. The life of the adult cicada involves making music and looking for love. What a life! When we listen to the loud cicada "music", it gives us an opportunity to recall the priority, power, and potential of love in our lives and in our world. The cicada goes through dramatic changes over its lifespan. We also experience physical, psychological, and relational changes that can involve both growth and decline. Faith teaches us of spiritual transformation and perhaps this is one of the most significant lessons we can derive from our modest comparison study. The abandoned exoskeletons we see on the trunks of trees and the walls of buildings are evidence that a miracle has occurred! The cicada must leave the shell that was Its under- ground armor for so long. A new creature emerges with a new body and with new wings to

Scripture tells us, "If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creature; the old is gone and the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17). There are certainly things and thoughts we need to cast aside to fully enjoy the life and blessings God holds for us in our future. What a wonderful lesson for us to remember )umme as we emerge from these persistent pandemic days. Loving God, Creator of all, thank As one last thought, I suggest that cicadas You for summer! can give us a reason to pause and consider how we are using our days. THE JUNE 2021 COURIER Page 3 \Lectio Divma, a Latin term, means divine reading and describes a way of reading the Scriptures whereby we gradually let go of our own agenda and open ourselves to what God wants to say to us. What better way to get to know God than by spending time with I God's Word? 'When you read a passage, notice what arises within you as you read it. Then you read it again and then again, noticing that words and phrases grab your heart and noticing the feelings that arise. You respond to God about whatever is stirring within as you read and pray with the passage. Finally, you rest and let God respond and speak to you. We for Dr. Rea and Dr. Lee, that they would keep You as the focus of their life and that they may be guided by You in thought, word, and deed. Give to each of them, wisdom and strength, day by day, as they perform the appointed duties and designated roles of their ministries. Shepherd them, as they shepherd this flock of The Inter-Faith Chapel. Help them not to react to the urgent at the expense of acting on the important. Keep them from becoming weary ofwell-doing or discouraged in their various responsibilities. In times when they need refreshment, lead them beside the still waters and renew them in green valleys. 0 God, give Woodle and Ramonia, servants hearts and caring spirits for the whole body of Christ. May each one continue to grow in grace and show forth in their lives and homes a genuine love for those to whom they minister, and a deep love for the Lord Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.

As Christians, we know that we shouldn't worry, but the reality is that we all do at times. And when we try to fight worry with faith, often we feel that we>re losing the battle. In those moments, well-intentioned comments like "God's got this!" or "Just pray about it" can leave us feeling even more burdened.
