DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME The time to “spring forward” is quickly approaching. Sunday, March 14, 2021 (also Pi Day and National Potato Chip Day!) will be the day to set clocks forward one hour and prepare for longer summer evenings with more sunlight during the day. While that is something to look forward to, losing an hour of sleep definitely is not. Here are a few ways you can get ready to adjust to the time change this year: Enjoy Longer Evenings One of the biggest perks to springing forward is the opportunity to enjoy more sunlight. Open your curtains to let the natural light into your home and to help reset your body’s clock. Take walks after dinner without having to worry about rushing back before the streetlights come on. Be Careful with Food It’s easier to prepare your body for bed when you eat dinner earlier in the evening and establish a cutoff time. Spicy or fatty foods, especially as bedtime snacks, can lead to insomnia and indigestion. Try to quit the caffeine earlier in the day as well to help yourself calm down when it’s time to catch some sleep. Go to Bed Earlier In the days leading up to Daylight Saving Time, begin your bedtime routine 15 minutes earlier and gradually Reduce Your Screen Time work your way up until the day of. This is particularly beneficial for smaller children, who typically have a more difficult time adjusting to the time change. You don’t want to do anything that could add to potential grogginess from the time change, so aim to put the electronics away at least one hour before Consistency is Key bedtime each night. Keep your sleep cycle more regular by aiming to wake up at the same time every morning, weekends included. While sleeping in is a short-term luxury, it can cause trouble with waking up and falling asleep While it may take a few days to adjust to Daylight Saving Time, taking the right steps will help you adjust during the week. It’s not a hard and fast rule to wake up at the same time every single day, but try to as easily. It is possible to avoid groggy mornings when you have time to prepare! Time to celebrate America’s rounded to 3.14 by estimation, is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The distance around #1 snack! the edge of any circle is just over three times the distance across. A quick history behind potato chips is that they started out as “Saratoga chips” in the 1850s. An unhappy customer at a restaurant kept sending his potatoes back to the kitchen, claiming they were too thick and Pi has puzzled people around the world for more than 4,000 years. Many well-known mathematicians soggy. George Crum, the chef at the time, took it upon himself to slice the potatoes as thin as he possibly as well as everyday people have spent hours upon hours trying to make sense of the math mystery. Surprisingly, the customer was finally satisfied with his order. ancient Babylon, rope stretchers that marked the locations of boundaries and buildings estimated pi to The new creation became a regular item on the menu known as “Saratoga Chips”. be 3.125. Eventually, a Greek mathematician named Archimedes used an algorithmic approach to try calculating pi. He continuously drew polygons until he had more than 90 to prove that pi equals 3.14. There are also cookbooks from the 1800s such as Shilling Cookery for the People by Alexis Soyer and The Virginia House-Wife by Mary Randolph that shows potatoes being thinly sliced and fried in grease, Pi didn’t get its official name until the Renaissance era when an English mathematician began calling it pi; but it is unknown whether they were to turn out crispy or not. however, it wasn’t until 1737 that it became widely embraced. The Greek letter for pi, π roughly translates to “circumference” from the Greek word perimetros. Thanks to modern advances in technology, pi has been calculated up to 31 TRILLION digits! However, it only takes the first 39 or so to perform universal calculations with little to no error. We will likely never find the accurate area or circumference of a circle since the exact value of pi cannot be calculated. Celebrating Pi Day has become a fun tradition for schools and learning centers worldwide. It is especially popular among math classes, for obvious reasons. Teachers will use the day to present new pi-related equations as well as PIE eating contests where students bring circular foods to share (although this may need to be done differently given the current pandemic). Even if you’re not in school anymore, you can celebrate Pi Day too! Order a pizza and bake a pie or cake for dessert. A basic storyline of how Passover came about is that the Pharaoh of Egypt at the time was fearful that there would be too many Jews living there, so he proceeds to enslave them and demands the murder of male Jewish babies. Moses, one of the Jewish babies who was not supposed to survive, was saved by his mother and midwives and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter. After a series of events, Moses is told by God to go and free his people from slavery. Each time the Pharaoh denied Moses’ request, God struck a plague on Egypt. They range from darkness, lice and boils to the last and darkest plague, the killing of Egyptian first-born children by an “angel of death”. The Israelites would mark their doors with the blood of a lamb in order to protect their children and the “angel” would pass over their doors. The Israelites were ultimately freed from slavery and Passover is celebrated in remembrance of God sparing them and protecting them in their distress. 20 21
