New Hartford Central School District Foundation Since 1993, the New Hartford Central School District Foundation has supported educational programming throughout the District. An independent, non-profit 501(c)3 organization, the Foundation raises funds through contributions by local businesses, organizations, individual donors, and by hosting its signature event: The Prince Charming Ball! In 2018, the Prince Charming Ball (a mother-son dance) raised nearly $25,000 with part of the proceeds benefiting the New Hartford Central School Communication Club. With Foundation support, the club purchased new audio-visual equipment to enhance its busy broadcast schedule on NHCR radio, the school’s official internet radio station. The 10th annual event is re-scheduled for April 30, 2022, at the Yahnundasis Golf Club. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised funding to support the purchase of the high-definition LED scoreboard at Don Edick Stadium, a grand piano for the James A. Meyer Performing Arts Center, and iPads Above: Fatima Fada, Created in Kindergarten for special education programming. Interested in helping the Foundation to continue making a difference? PARP Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) is designed to encourage reading. Our elementary schools plan many activities to motivate stu- dents and promote a love of reading that will last a lifetime. Our goal is 100 percent participation. We urge parents to spend 15 minutes each day reading to your children, having them read to you, or reading together. It will be time well spent! OHM BOCES School Meal Program New Hartford Central School District’s meal program is operated in each building by the Oneida-Herkimer- Madison BOCES School Food Service Program. OHM BOCES strives to provide students with tasty, nutritious, fresh, foods that appeal to students and the school community. We have continually exceeded federal and state guidelines for all required nutrients and increased our offerings of fresh fruit and vegetables. Farm to School items and programming are improving our students’ connections to fresh food and resources. The menu balances student preference, commodity foods, and locally sourced foods that are fresh, fun, and encourage students to explore new flavors and new preparations. Each student has their own meal account with an assigned pin number. Please be sure to help your children Gabe Cull, Created in Grade 11 learn their numbers, especially if they are new buyers. You can also use this account to make payments; checks made out to OHM BOCES Food Service, or online prepayments using www.myschoolbucks.com are preferable, though cash in a labeled envelope is also an option. Lunch during the 2021-2022 school year is free. Milk will remain at $0.60 per half pint. All students can eat complete meals at no charge regardless of income. A la carte items such as frozen yogurt, baked chips, Sienna Zuccaro, Created in Studio Art and whole grain cookies will be available for purchase most days in the school cafeterias. There is no charging of a la carte items; meaning students must have a positive account balance in order to purchase. MySchoolBucks.com is an excellent way to monitor your childrens’ meal and a la carte purchases. These accounts are free to set up and use; you can even set up email reminders for when a balance gets low! If you choose to use them for prepayment, a small fee is incurred with each transaction. Negative balance letters will be sent home regularly for those students who owe money on their accounts. Claire Gerardo, Created in Grade 1 Please don’t hesitate to contact us! Student Services New Hartford Central School’s Student Services Department includes psychological, social work, counseling, speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy and language services that are available to students experiencing academic and/or school adjustment difficulties. They are not intended to replace community agency or private practitioner services needed for clinical diagnosis and/or long-term counseling. Referrals to Student Services may be made through each building’s Instructional Support Team or directly by the parent or guardian. A referral to CSE should be considered only after building level support have been implemented. Social-emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and development. The New Hartford Central School District offers counseling services in every building to focus on developing SEL for students that need to improve attitudes, relationships and academic performance. Students who are recommended for counseling to further develop SEL learn skills and strategies to manage emotions, establish and maintain appropriate relationships and make responsible decisions. This year, the Student Services Office is fortunate to have an additional full-time school psychologist within the District to evaluate, observe and counsel students at every level. In addition to our school psychologist, we also have school social workers in every building to address any social-emotional needs that students may experience. Parents who are concerned about their child’s school progress are encouraged to contact the child’s teacher or principal. More information regarding the Instructional Support Team and/or the Committee on Special Education can be obtained by calling the Director of Student Services, Pamela Smoulcey, at 315-738-9313. Banana Splits Banana Splits is a peer support group for children whose families are going through transition (separation, divorce, adoption, illness, or death of a family member). Our program supports children through group meetings, which are organized by grade level. The groups meet during lunch and involve time for news and sharing, as well as an activity or game. It is a wonderful program that can be found in schools nationwide, as well as around the world. New Hartford Central School District has proudly offered Banana Splits for many years at the elementary level. An annual celebration is held at the end of each school year with a picnic at the New Hartford Recreation Center, which is attended by students, parents and participating teachers. The success of the program can be attributed to the enthusiastic support of families, faculty/staff, administration, PTAs and more than 200 student members. New Teacher Induction Program All teachers who are new to our district participate in the Induction Program for a period of two to three years. New teachers are paired with an experienced teacher who serves as a mentor. In addition to the mentor, other members of the school community serve as support providers, working directly with new teachers in their classrooms to apply effective instructional practices. This systematic training and support eases the transition into teaching, improves teacher effectiveness in the classroom and promotes the district’s culture. All of this translates into the highest quality educational experience that we can provide for our students. The program has the following goals: • To ensure the personal and professional well-being of beginning teachers. • To increase instructional effectiveness through sound classroom management. • To engender the process of self-reflection. • To promote continual professional growth. • To assist teachers in satisfying district and state requirements. • To transmit the culture of the system. Medication and Physical Exams When your child requires medication during the school day, a written physician’s order (including diagnosis), as well as written parent permission is necessary. Medication must be in the original labeled container. (Your pharmacist can usually provide a second container for this purpose.) Medications must be delivered by an adult at the elementary level. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications. All medical treatments necessary in school, including crutches, require written medical authorization. Please contact your school nurse for medication administration forms (also available on the District website under “Departments/Health Office”.) Physical exams are mandated by New York state for all new students and for those entering grades K,1,3,5,7,9 & 11. Physicals must be by a NYS Physician NP or PA. These can be offered in school.
