From the President On behalf of Tauranga Photographic Society, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the many talented photographers who have taken the time and effort to enter the 2019 Tauranga Audio-Visual Salon. This year the salon attracted a record 81 entries from seven countries; New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands, making this salon a truly colourful, international event. The 2019 salon featured four categories; Theme, Documentary, Music, Poetry & Song, and The World of Nature resulting in 51 merit and acceptance awards over and above the category winners. The panel of judges commented on the ever- increasing standards of excellence exhibited across all categories, with the winning entries displaying both innovative techniques and heightened levels of professionalism. I would like to personally acknowledge the team of dedicated individuals who work year by year on this salon. Many were there at its inception and through dogged determination, having built success upon success, made the salon the event it is today. My thanks also to the sponsors Carters Photographics, Sony, FujiFilm, and Adata, without whom this salon would not be possible. Annette Johnston APSNZ President, Tauranga Photographic Society 1
About Tauranga Tauranga is a city of 140,000 in the Bay of Plenty on the East Coast of the North Island. Its prosperity is based on the international port which is the largest in NZ by value and volume. Over recent years there has been significant growth in light industry, commercial activity and population. The main exports are forestry products, dairy produce and kiwifruit. The modern varieties of kiwifruit have been developed in the region and are a valued export along with a growth in the export of avocados. The Bay area is popular as a holiday destination, particularly for New Zealanders, because of its comfortable climate and the outstanding surf and swimming beaches. In recent years it has attracted international tourists who come on one of over 100 cruise ships that visit during the summer months. Many passengers take the opportunity to visit the nearby geothermal area of Rotorua or the ‘Lord of the Rings’ landscape in Matamata. Other visitors choose to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the scenic coastal walks, along with cafes and shopping. 3
Thoughts from the Judges Judging the audio-visuals in the Tauranga AV Salon was a real pleasure. There was a wide variety of topics and approaches which maintained our interest throughout the judging weekend. When the judges were asked if they had any comments which may be of assistance to newer AV workers the immediate response was ‘Often less is more!’ They suggested that once the AV had been created, you should watch it critically several times, replace any poor quality images and remove images that were not important to the telling of the story. If possible leave the AV for a while until you are less emotionally involved in its creation and then have another look to see how you react to it and how it could be improved. A second trend they noticed was the use of very long transitions. Sometimes this suits the story and creates an appropriate mood but sometimes it felt as though the author didn’t have sufficient images and was just trying to fill the space. Other suggestions that may be helpful included gradually lowering the volume of the music when the narration was being spoken but don’t cut it altogether. When including video, try to get a seamless transition both into and exiting the video. Well done to everyone who entered and congratulations to all the successful entrants. We look forward to seeing your entries next year. 4
