July 24, 2021 97th Consecutive Running of the Bayview Mackinac Race “The Longest Consecutively Run Fresh Water Sailboat Race in the World”
Commodore’s Message Fellow Sailors, Family and Friends, DETROIT’S FAVORITE On behalf of Bayview Yacht Club, I am honored to welcome you all to the 97th running of the Bayview Mackinac Race, the longest consecutively run freshwater race in the world. HAS A NEW LOOK. After navigating the turbulent waters of 2020 and being restricted by the US/Canada border closure, we have rebounded nicely with almost 200 boats registered. Unfortunately, many of our Canadian friends are unable to join us. When we sail across the starting line, let’s remember how our passion for the wind and the open water drives us towards the “Mac Race” each year. Family and friends will look on with excitement and pride as we experience the great joy and challenge that is sailing on Lake Huron. It takes leadership, perseverance, and adaptability to organize and run the Bayview Mackinac Race, and this is especially true with all the uncertainties we’ve experienced since March of 2020. Just four short months ago, social gatherings and hospitality operations were shut down due to the pandemic. A month ago, we were still uncertain as to exactly what the race and onshore activities would look like. I want to thank our Mackinac Race Chairman, Commodore Greg Thomas, and the entire Mackinac Race Authority for guiding us to the start of our summer classic. Because of their efforts, we will run our race upon the blue waters of Lake Huron and have our awards party on the island. Each year, the costs associated with running The Bayview Mackinac Race increase as we strive to deliver an exceptional experience for participants. Our sponsors are the lifeblood of our race, for without them, we could not run such a grand event. We have two Presenting Sponsors in Atwater Brewery and Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation. This year, you’ll have a chance to taste the Atwater products as their beer tent will anchor the awards party. Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation continues to support us through fair weather and foul while playing a vital role in sustaining our race and furthering the sport of sailing. Additional sponsorship support comes from Grand Hotel, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, Aitken & Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, Sika Group, Flagstar Bank, Faygo, Lake Huron Medical Center, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Marx Layne Marketing and Coral Reef Sailing Apparel. I encourage you to support these companies. It is their backing that enables us to deliver a first- class event while keeping the cost to competitors in check. I’d also like to thank the City of Port Huron, Port Huron Yacht Club, and Mackinac Island for their hospitality while hosting our sailors, friends, and families. Additionally, we thank the US Coast Guard for their assistance and watching over the fleet. Again, my heartfelt thanks go out to all the volunteers, professionals, sponsors, and competitors whose efforts have made this year’s race possible. These are the members and friends that seek to perpetuate our jewel that is the Bayview Mackinac Race. I wish you all good luck, fair winds, and a safe race to the island. I’ll see you at the party. Sincerely, Chuck Stormes Commodore 2021 237 Jo s e p h Ca m p a u S t r e e t , De t r o i t , M I 4 8 2 0 7 ( 3 1 3 ) 8 7 7 - 92 0 5 A T W A T E R B E E R . C OM
On the Cover: “Pendragon” On the Cover: Contessa 43, “Pendragon” approaching the finish line of the 2020 Bayview Mackinac Race Owners: Commodore Greg Thomas & John Trost Racers, Family and Friends, The famed sail yacht “Pendragon” participated in her first three BYC Mac races (1978-1980) as “Aristea” owned by Dave Froburg of Chicago. In 1981, she was purchased by Greg’s father and Bayview member, Dr. Murray Thomas. She continued to compete through 2020 for a total of 43 races, 40 of those as “Pendragon”. In 1995, Murray passed the boat to Greg and John, who continued to sail the mighty Dragon together for another 25 years. In total, “Pendragon” sailed the Bayview Mackinac Race under the BYC burgee for 40 consecutive years, winning eight times and bringing home countless flags. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that this year will mark the 48th consecutive Bayview Mackinac Race that Greg and John have sailed together. Their friendship, passion for the sport of yacht racing, and love for the “Mac Race” characterizes so much that is Bayview Yacht Club. On behalf of the Bayview Board and all our members, I want to acknowledge Dr. Murray Thomas for bringing the black Doug Peterson designed boat to Bayview and starting a tradition that Commodore Greg Thomas and John Trost carried on for all these years. To the crews, families, and all the friends of “Pendragon”, thank you for your inspiration and ongoing support for Bayview SET SAIL TO FRESH AIR and our beloved summer classic. O N T H E S T RA I T S O F M AC K I NAC I would also like to again thank Commodore Thomas for his dedication to our race and his years of involvement. This will be his third stint as Mackinac Race Chair, and we continue to benefit from his expertise and guidance. From the Race Chairman 2021 Race Committee Welcome to the 97th consecutive Bayview Yacht Club Mackinac Race! Administration Finishing Area - Shift 3 Race Chair 2021 Com. Greg Thomas Watch Captain Dennis Cotter 97 consecutive years. By any standard, that’s a lot. You have to overcome many obstacles to make that kind Assistant Chair, Race Chair 2022 Luiz Kahl Denise Cotter of run. Since the inaugural race in 1925, we saw the world plunge into a Great Depression, followed by a World Assistant Chair, Race Chair 2023 Kevin Thomas Tristan Cotter War, and most recently, an international pandemic. Yet somehow the men and women who make up our Karen Fink Race Committee, and those who sail these boats, have found a way to make the show go on, without interruption. And not only just go on, but to thrive How could that be? Mary Ann Maier Mackinac Race Authority Sharon Murray Chair Tom Burleson Let me suggest that, in the first instance, it has to be a fantastic event. The Bayview Mackinac Race is most Joyce Rapelje assuredly that. It begins by occurring in mid to late July, when the days are long, the weather is blissful, and Robert Nutter Finish Line Trailer spirits are high. Couple that with the sweet water of Lake Huron – blue skies and even bluer water – and you Chris Clark Manager Sandra Thompson are now painting on a canvas that has promise. Com. Greg Thomas Luiz Kahl Add to the mix the fact that we pursue an ancient art, sailing with the wind, augmented by science and Kevin Thomas Legal technology, such that the craft that we are on are capable of doing truly remarkable things. They are beautiful, Chair Kevin Thomas they are amazing, and they are fast. Paul Falcone Todd Jones Now let’s throw in a little competition, the chance to show those against whom we compete that we are every Don Maxwell Public Relations bit as good as them, and maybe, on occasion, just a little better. How often have we seen a boat win her class, Administrator Linda Rosiek Chair David Stoyka or maybe even overall, by a few minutes or seconds, or by a boat length, after 48 grueling and intense hours? This is truly a tribute to the skill of those who compete, and competing against the best is the only way to test that skill. Race Officials Race Documents Chief Judge Tom Rinda Chair Com. Peter Griffin Make it a test of your mettle as well. Test yourself against all that Mother Nature can throw at you. The violent Principal Race Officer Jeff Maier thunderstorms, the 20-hour blows, the enormous, steep waves, the fog, the dark, the exhaustion that follows, all of which sometimes seem to be designed to prevent from reaching your goal. Race Support Race Committees Matt Prost Now we have the makings of a fantastic event. But it needs a little more. Like the machine-like cadence of Safety Committee your crew as they prepare for the race for weeks ahead. Your family kicking in, not only in the preparations, but Jen Brown providing you a spirited send-off in the pre-race excitement of Port Huron’s Bluewater Festival, and, perhaps Chair Com. From the Mackinac Race Authority Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends! This year marks the 97th consecutive year of the Bayview Mackinac race and it is great to have our friends from Lake Michigan back. Unfortunately, our Canadian friends are still struggling with COVID and cannot join us, but hope springs eternal that we’ll see them in 2022. After all the hurdles we had to overcome to make last year’s race happen, you would think this year would be a piece of cake. Guess again - new ever-changing challenges seem to pop up at every turn. When we started planning for the 2021 Bayview Mackinac Race last August, we had no idea what the future would hold. In March, the third wave of COVID hit Michigan and for all practical purposes Michigan shut down yet again. The main lesson learned last year, “stay patient and flexible” served us well as we formulated a new contingency plan every time the rules changed. Throughout all the turmoil, Commadore Greg Thomas, our 2021 Race Chairman (serving as race chairman for the third time) along with Linda Rosiek, our Race Administrator guided us through the hoops and hurdles. Assisting Greg and Linda are Technical Committee Chairman Art LeVasseur, Safety Committee Chairman Com. Brian Geraghty, and the entire Mackinac Race Authority (in alphabetical order) Chris Clark, Paul Falcone, Todd Jones, Luiz Kahl, Don Maxwell, Bob Nutter, Kevin Thomas and yours truly. We could not run this race without our sponsors Atwater Brewery, The Bayview Yacht Club Foundation (aka Mackinac Foundation), Grand Hotel, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, Sika Group, Flagstar Bank, Aitken & Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Faygo, Lake Huron Medical Center, Marx Layne and Coral Reef Sailing Apparel. We also want to thank our host cities Port Huron and Mackinac Island for 97 years of hospitality and accommodation. We couldn’t run this race without them and encourage all competitors and fans to enjoy everything both cities have to offer at each end of Lake Huron. Sail Safe, Sail Fast. We look forward to seeing y’all at our Island Party. Regards, Tom Burleson 2021 Mackinac Race Authority Chairman

When Escapade was under full sail, she had over 6,000 sq. ft. of sail area. Ted won on most every boat he sailed on, many of which were berthed at Bayview Yacht Club.
