State St. (On the Commons)| mockingbirdpaperie.com A MONTHLY SERIES PRESENTED BY Erika Kuryla – Woven Waters, Recent Works Artist Statement: Being born in Haverford, PA, and living across the street from an Art Center was my first introduction to art at 4 years old. Teaching art on cruise ships awakened me to new and different places and the art treasures of the areas I visited. Now living in Upstate NY I am, each and every day, inspired by the beauty of nature and the art at various galleries August Gallery Shows & Locations etc. I am a multi- media artist and for years have been doing art work on glass with hand made and hand painted papers. 1. The Mink Gallery days through Saturdays, 10am to 5pm. 614 North Cayuga / www.barbaramink.com In-person The Spirit of Tompkins exhibit is a collection of stories, portraits and videos of people and their places that highlight Barbara Mink-Recent Works our diverse population, and their relationships with multiple environments to foster a strong sense of community. “Our The Mink Gallery at 614 North Cayuga welcomes you! A nice walk from the mission is to capture and celebrate the Spirit of Tompkins Commons, or plenty of parking across the street! County – highlighting our rich culture of people and the places that are meaningful to them.” Portraits by local photographer Robyn Wishna are portraits of people, individually or as groups, in their homes, work, farms, or other meaningful places. Participants chose their own place to be photographed and each participant was asked to provide a short explanation of why they chose that place. Their words are used alongside their portraits to help tell their stories. The project is a collaboration of The Discovery Trail, the Town of Ithaca (celebrating its bicentennial in 2021) and Photog- rapher/project director Robyn Wishna. Through Shik Lee, Noa Tia, and Rebecca Woodie earth tone colors, ornamental layouts, and meticulous detail, the work challenges viewers to delve beyond aesthetic allure and allow mysticism In this season of growth and renewal we celebrate the reopening of to guide their interpretation. Tompkins County Public Library with Fit for a Goddess. TCPL’s theme for 2020-2021 is “myth.” To the female energy that includes love, wisdom and creation we bow. We’re honoring the stunning from many systems: myth, folktale, and imagination. This exhibit is devoted to the fantastic, 6. 7. State of the Art Gallery 120 W. Martin Luther King, Jr. / State St. soagithaca.org | facebook.com/stateoftheartgallery 607-277-1626 Hours: Thursday-Sunday, 12-5pm. The gallery’s New Members’ Show features work by Christine Chin and Irina Kassabova. Ms. Chin’s “Concerning Climate Change” will show new work in fabric sculpture, animation and cyanotype photograms and Ms. Kassabova’s “The Vio- lins” is work in charcoal, oil and pastels. The opening recep- tion will be Friday, August 6, 5-8pm and the show will run from August 5-29, 2021. Ms. Chin will host “Ask the Artist Af- ternoons” in the gallery on Saturday, August 21 and Sunday, August 29. On Saturday, August 7, the gallery is open from 11-5pm as part of the Greater Ithaca Art Trail. In the Salon the “Small Works Show” features works $50 or less by members with proceeds to help cover the cost of our newly completed renovation. There is curbside parking and the gallery has ADA accessibility. We are abiding by health department rules regarding masks, distancing, and limiting the number of viewers in the gallery at one time. 8. Hilton Garden Inn 130 E. Seneca St.| www.ithaca.hgi.com Nancy Ridenour, Recent Works Artist Statement: Nancy V. Ridenour grew up in a florist family in Schenectady, NY. After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in biology, she worked in Laos for five years as a village vol- unteer. Upon return to Ithaca, she became a biology teacher at Ithaca High School. In 2005, Nancy retired from teaching and enrolled in photog- raphy classes at TC3. The subjects over the years have includ- ed flowers, zoo animals, architecture, Florida birds, travel, and abstracts.
