The 2022-23 Season
Welcome to the 27th edition of the Harmelin Media Annual TV Preview. 2021 saw
the broadcast networks start to embrace their identity as part of holistic media
companies instead of just “TV.” That change has been fully realized this year as the
media companies presented their broadcast, cable and streaming offerings as one
entity during this year’s upfront presentations in May. As streaming viewing
continues to escalate, the networks have shifted to use all their properties to give
consumers options to view their content whenever and wherever they choose.
Those viewing options increased in 2021 as the number of premium scripted
original TV shows on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms increased by 5%, to
559. That’s 5% more than in 2019, due to all the content provided from the
streaming services and after a decline in 2020 due to COVID production delays.

The cost of that content continues to rise. While
several of the streaming services were opposed to
including advertising, that is slowly changing with the
addition of ad-supported options on HBO Max,
Disney+, and coming soon to Netflix due to their drop
in subscribers. The ad-free model and ability to binge
shows on demand has continuously fueled the growth
of the streaming services. However, with the increased
competition from all the streaming services, there is
now discussion on releasing shows weekly as the
broadcast networks, cable companies and premium
subscription services such as HBO and Showtime have
done for years. This would keep subscribers longer.

While the streaming services have the challenge of
keeping subscribers, the broadcast and cable networks
have their own viewership woes. With hit shows
ending such as NBC’s This is Us, ABC’s black-ish, CBS’s
Bull and Magnum P.I. (although Magnum will find a new
home in 2023 with NBC’s announcement of its pickup)
and AMC’s The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, they’ll
need to replace those loyal viewers through the new
fall programming.
Some of that new fall content includes NBC’s reboot of
Quantum Leap; ABC’s spin-off of The Rookie: Feds
starring Niecy Nash-Betts (Claws), and Hilary Swank
(Boys Don’t Cry) starring in Alaska Daily, CBS’s East New
York with Jimmy Smits (NYPD Blue) and So Help Me Todd
with Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River). FOX will finally
debut Monarch starring Susan Sarandon (Thelma &
Louise), which was originally supposed to be released in
2021. FOX will also expand its relationship with Jamie
Foxx, host of Beat Shazam! and who will now be an
executive producer on Alert, focusing on LAPD’s
missing person unit.

The Rookie spin-off features Niecy Nash-Betts (Reno 911) as the oldest
rookie in the FBI Academy. Introduced during a two-part event in The
Rookie’s 4th season, Nash-Betts’ humor mixed in with the drama that
has pulled in a strong audience for The Rookie, makes for a great
pairing. The series will also star Frankie Faison (The Wire).

It’s been 29 years since someone lit the black flame candle and
resurrected the 17th-century Sanderson sisters, and they are
looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high school students to
stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on
Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve. Hocus Pocus 2 will

An epic period fantasy series with a modern sensibility set in an
enchanted land of breathtaking beauty, Willow features a diverse
international cast, and Jonathan Kasdan, Ron Howard, Wendy

executive producers. The series will premiere in November and
takes place years after the events of the original “Willow” film.
The story begins with an aspiring magician from a Nelwyn village

guardians of the galaxy holiday special
Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is written and directed by Guardians of the
Galaxy veteran James Gunn. Gunn has confirmed that the show will not just be a
one-off special, but rather will fit into the overarching MCU plot and will be the
conclusion of Phase Four of the MCU.
national treasure: edge of history
This Disney+ original series is an expansion of the National Treasure movie
franchise told from the point of view of a young heroine, Jess (newcomer Lisette
Olivera), a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer in search of answers about her
family. She embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the
past and save a lost Pan-American treasure. The series will premiere in 2023.
star wars: visions volume 2
Star Wars: Visions stretches beyond any one form of animation and serves as a
broader framework for celebratory expressions of Star Wars storytelling.
Premiering in spring 2023, Volume 2 will showcase that potential as the shorts go
on a global tour, celebrating the incredible animation happening across countries
and cultures, through the mythos of Star Wars.

Secret Invasion is a newly announced series which stars Samuel L. Jackson
as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos - characters who
first met in Captain Marvel. The crossover event series showcases a
faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for
years. This series is slated for Spring 2023.
echo
The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in
New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her
past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the
meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.
Echo will premiere in Summer 2023.

If you want a great party, hire a party planner. If you want an outrageous, unforgettable
party, call in someone who can make something fabulous and supremely entertaining out
of almost nothing… a drag queen! Created and executive produced by and featuring Neil
Patrick Harris and David Burtka and their celebrity friends, Drag Me to Dinner is the new
close-ended comedic competition for 2023 that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
fleishman is in trouble
This drama premiering in 2022 centers on a recently divorced forty-something (Toby
Fleishman, played by Jesse Eisenberg), who starts using dating apps and enjoying his
newfound freedom before his ex-wife mysteriously disappears, leaving him with his kids.
Now, Fleishman will have to examine what happened to their marriage to figure out
what happened to Rachel (played by Clare Danes), all while balancing parenting,
promotions and hookups. Toby reconnects with his college friend Libby (played by Lizzy
Caplan) following the split, who also narrates the series.
the hair tales
Hulu is teaming with OWN for the first time on The Hair Tales, a docuseries that focuses
on Black women, beauty and identity through the distinctive lens of Black hair. This will
be produced by Tracee Ellis Ross and will premiere in 2022.

history of the world part 2
A continuation of the ‘80s cult classic movie by Mel Brooks, this version will extend the
running time from a feature-length film to an eight-episode series, full of the type of off-
the-wall humor for which Brooks is known. Nick Kroll, Ike Barinholtz, and Wanda Sykes
have signed up as writers and co-stars, with other cast members to include Seth Rogen,
J.B. Smoove and Rob Corddry. Other big-name actors are rumored to be up for cameos
and unspecified roles, as well. Look for this one in 2022.
koala man
This animated show will premiere in 2022 and follows Kevin and his not-so-secret
identity, whose only superpower is a burning passion for following rules and snuffing out
petty crime in the town of Dapto. Though it may seem like any other Australian suburb,
forces of evil both cosmic and man-made lie in wait to pounce on unsuspecting
Daptonians. On a quest to clean up his hometown, and often roping his frustrated family
into his adventures, Koala Man stands at the ready. He’ll do whatever it takes to defeat
villainous masterminds, supernatural horrors, or worse: jerks who don’t take their
rubbish bins down on the proper days. Hugh Jackman recently joined the cast and will
voice Big Greg, the most well-liked man in Dapto and head of the Town Council.

From Executive Producer David Chang comes a radical twist on the cooking competition,
as ten chefs anonymously rank each other’s food through a series of blind tastings. With
their true identities concealed, everything will be hidden except the one thing that
matters most… the food. Secret Chef will premiere in 2023.

Onyx Collective, the Disney content brand focused on underrepresented audiences,
has picked up its first comedy series. Premiering in 2022, the half-hour comedy
revolves around a messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom
(Kerry Washington) whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad gets out of prison
and moves in with her and her teenage son.

A musical romantic comedy set in New York City in the waning days of 1999, following
the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple as they fall in love – and discover that the
single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves. They
must navigate the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that
live inside their heads. Up Here is slated to premiere in 2023.

Premiering in 2022, Kumail Nanjiani and Juliette Lewis will star in the upcoming eight-
episode series which will tell of the rise and fall of the famous ‘70s male dance troupe.
The show will detail the “insane, darkly comedic, crime-ridden story behind the unique
male revue that became a cultural phenomenon.”

This musical drama was delayed from its scheduled debut in January
due to unavoidable realities of the pandemic. It has become Fox
Entertainment’s top priority and is set to premiere post NFL in early
September. Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise)
stars alongside multi-Platinum country music star and three-time
Academy of Country Music Award winner, Trace Adkins. The premise:
power couple Dottie and Albie Roman have created a country music
dynasty together. In addition to watching the family find out the harsh
truths behind their family’s success, viewers can also expect to see top
grade musical performances. Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies) plays the heir
to the family fortune, who will stop at nothing to protect her family’s
legacy while in pursuit of her own stardom.

Another unscripted show by award-winning chef and
restaurateur Gordon Ramsay, as he heads a brand-new
competition series, where he puts the contestants in all kinds
of challenging situations, both inside and outside of the
kitchen. In this iteration, Ramsay will reward the winner with
an investment to take their culinary ideas to the next level.

All-new animated series starring Emmy Award winner Jon Set in Ancient Greece and centered around a flawed
Hamm (Mad Men), who is a detective who seemingly can family of humans, gods, and monsters as they try to run

killers of the flower moon
Based on the book Killers of The Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and The Birth
of the FBI, the film tells the story of a series of murders of wealthy Osage
Native Americans in Oklahoma during the 1920s after oil was found on their
land. Paramount plans to release the film in theaters, while it will be
available to stream exclusively on Apple TV+. Directed by Martin Scorsese,
Killers of the Flower Moon will star Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street)
and Robert De Niro (Goodfellas) in the leading roles, along with Brendan
Fraser (Crash) and Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog). The film is expected
to be released in May of 2023.

Spirited is a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol starring

was adapted from the novel by Joyce Carol Oates. Ana de Armas (Knives
Out) will portray Norma Jeane Mortenson throughout her transformation
into Marilyn Monroe. Cast as her more famous husbands, Adrien Brody
(Peaky Blinders) will play author Arthur Miller while Bobby Cannavale (Ant-
Man) depicts New York Yankee great Joe DiMaggio. Notably, this will be the

Based on book written by Daria Polatin, this suspense thriller miniseries
stars Emily Deschanel (Bones) as a psychiatrist who is determined to protect

plays Detective Lopez. The premiere will be later this year.

Filming in New York City, creator Eric Garcia (Matchstick Men) investigates a
heist that spans several decades as he explores the bearer bonds lost to
Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The cast includes Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking
Bad), Paz Vega (Spanglish) and Rufus Sewell (Dark City). As of now there are
more than 14 roles. Look for the premiere in early 2023.

Oscar-winning director Tim Burton (Beetlejuice) will make his small screen
debut with an Addams Family spin-off, Wednesday. The protagonist is played
by Jenna Ortega (Yes Day) and has had a hard time mastering her psychic
abilities. She has bounced around to five schools in eight years and is
entering yet another. Her parents, Morticia (played by Catherine Zeta-
Jones, Chicago) and Gomez (played by played by Luis Guzman, Hightown)
hope this mysterious new school will do the trick. The release will be part of

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the first time the
legends of the Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set
thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord
of the Rings. The series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and
new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. The
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premiered September 2nd on Prime Video.

My Policeman is a romance drama film that follows the story of three
individuals – policeman Tom (Harry Styles), teacher Marion (Emma Corrin, The
Crown), and museum curator Patrick (David Dawson, The Last Kingdom) – in
1950s Britain. Later in life during the 1990s, an older Tom (Linus Roache,
Vikings), Marion (Gina McKee, Notting Hill), and Patrick (Rupert Everett, My

Based on the book by Bethan Roberts and directed by Michael Grandage, My
