Message from PROF BISMARK TYOBEKA P R I N C I PA L A N D V I C E - C H A N C E L L O R Dear First-year Students Welcome to the North-West University (NWU). You have made the right choice which you will not regret. As you will be embarking on your higher education journey, the NWU will now become your home away from home. Through our teaching-learning, research, community engagement activities and a vibrant student life, we always strive to expose our students to a wide range of experiences to ensure that they are ready to face the real world of work and provide solutions to societal challenges. We urge you to approach the Registration & Orientation (R&O) programme with an open mind as it will assist in preparing you to better understand yourself, your fellow students, and the nature of the university environment. Remember, you are now part of the university community, and it is paramount for you to know all available educational, extracurricular, and psychological support services to ensure that your academic journey becomes a success. The NWU takes pride in promoting diversity which extends beyond our staff and students. This is reflected through our curriculum offering, and student activities. It is through these opportunities that you will have an opportunity to better prepare for the increasingly interconnected and multicultural world. Hence, it becomes priority for the university culture to be inclusive for all, irrespective of where you come from, and we encourage you to make yourself at home and use all available opportunities. With that said, I wish to emphasize that we have zero tolerance to any form of discriminatory practices. Therefore, I urge you to respect the rights of your fellow students and staff. We do not tolerate any form of bullying, harassment, and gender-based violence, and we hope that you will join hands with us in ensuring that this type of behavior does not prevail at the NWU. It is our responsibility (yourselves included) to make all of us feel respected so that you can all have an opportunity to fully pursue educational opportunities to full capacity. The security and safety of our staff and students remain priorities. We shall continue to enhance all programmes that are aimed at ensuring that our campuses remain the safe for students and staff. Many of our graduates are leaders in both the public and private sectors. They started where you are today – the Registration & Orientation programme. They came here knowing a few friends from their high schools, and left the university with a network of friends and potential business partners. The lucky ones also found their soul mates and potential spouses on campuses. This is a very important phase of your lives. Please take advantage of the opportunities that are presented in all areas of the university life. Make time to discover new friends, hobbies, learn other languages and cultures on our campuses, and most importantly learn from your mistakes and those of your friends and acquaintances as they will shape your character. Familiarise yourself with all the academic and non-academic support services and tools that are essential for your successful academic year. Remember and trust the advice that your family gave you. A warm welcome to the North-West University. It all starts here®. Enkosi Baie dankie Ke a leboga 6
