What to See and Do 2022 Old Wadena Rendezvous and As always there will be a fur traders village complete with blacksmith shop and of course the justly famous “Baby’s Fry Folklife Festival and Chautauqua Bread” tent with the world’s best fry bread featuring bannock, 2022 marks the 31st annual Old Wadena Rendezvous, Folklife Festival and Chautauqua. The Rendezvous celebrates the region’s past and its rich cultural chicken cordon bleu, or fruit fillings. Guests can order a plain fry bread or one with a dash of cinnamon sugar. Local naturalist Dick Oehlenschlager will provide inheritance through storytelling, theater, music, dance, and interpretive talks about the flora and fauna of the region as well art. The Hockey Club provides activities for over 100 kids from beginning skaters to high school age. In addition to Wadena, the communities of New York Mills, Sebeka, Staples, Verndale, Parkers Prairie, Henning and Bertha also participate. Celebrating the Arts Wadena Memorial Auditorium B uilt in 1934, the Wadena Memorial Auditorium is a cultural and historic landmark that provides countless hours of community and regional enjoyment. The auditorium has been restored in the beautiful art-deco style of the 1930s. As the community and school’s center for the performing arts, it is one of Wadena’s most appreciated assets. Wadena-Deer Creek High School’s Drama Department’s Fall play and One-Act play rehearse and perform at the Auditorium. Their performances have received “superior” ratings at the State One-Act Festival six times, as well as 11 appearances at State. The community theater group, Wadena Madhatter’s Community Theatre Area Madhatters, also perform in the auditorium. In addition, they offer a summer theater camp for area youth. M adhatters.inc is a community theatre group combining the talents of people from Wadena and the surrounding area. The theatre group currently holds their perfor- mances in the Wadena Memorial Auditorium and other venues such as the city park. Agriculture COUNTY FAIR WADENA FARMERS MARKET T he 128th Annual Wadena County Fair will be held June 22-26, 2022 at the Wadena County Fairgrounds, 400 Ash Ave., NW, Wadena. The Wadena County Fair has parking and entertainment for the whole family. The fair is family friendly with many new and repeat exhibits and shows. 4-H and open divisions, the Family Fun Center, carnival, many new vendors and exciting grandstand events. The Wadena County Fair is organized by the Wadena County Agricultural Society whose mission is to recognize and promote the citizens, organizations, and businesses in Wadena County. We are working to bring more variety to our markets. We work with local businesses to promote and sustain our market. We accept SNAP/EBT purchases and this year those purchases can be tripled so a $10 purchase can get up to $30 in purchasing dollars. We also have a program for kids called the Power of Produce (POP) where kids can get a free $2 token each week to purchase produce at the market. There is also a program for people age 65 and older called our POP Plus program where they can receive a free $4 token per week for the purchase of produce. Our Friday market is located north on Hwy 71 across from Tri-County Health Care in the Wesley building parking lot. The market opens at 2:00 pm and goes until 5:30 pm starting the end of May and running through October. We usually average around 10-12 vendors each week with a variety of fresh veggies and fruit, honey and maple syrup, craft items, and fresh baked goods and canned produce along with jams and jellies. We are planning to have a Tuesday market at the BN Park starting mid-July to mid-September from 7:00 am – 11:00 am. We accept EBT and debit cards. Education ADULT BASIC EDUCATION A dult Basic Education (ABE) is the program for adults who would like to improve reading, writing and math skills. ABE provides opportunities for adults to practice, learn from and master the skills and strategies required for responsible citizen- ship, productive employment and self-sufficiency. Programs include: English as a Second Language: Individualized instruc- tion for any adult whose native language is not English. SINCE 1935 GED (High School Equivalency Certificate): Official GED testing offered monthly. Free and individualized tutoring available to prepare for GED. Reading for Adults: Free and confidential help for adults who have difficulty reading. Eligibility: Adult Basic Education programs serve persons ages 16 and older not currently enrolled in a high school program or who have educational needs below the high school completion level.
