ULTRA-TRAIL HARRICANA OF CANADA TM SEPTEMBER 9-10-11 2022 2022 PROGRAM Presented by ultratrailharricana.com | 1
Sébastien Boivin, co-founder of the Ultra-Trail Harricana du CanadaTM Traveler, consummate speaker and great doer, Sébastien Boivin learned a dozen years ago that he had multiple sclerosis. Before his life changed, Sébastien was a man, an “amigo” and proud father of Félix and Zacharie and this damned illness was not going to stop him. Versatile, he quickly traded his hammers and his "jobber" belt for a microphone and a job organizing events. With his sister Geneviève Boivin and his friend Sébastien Côté, he founded, in 2011, the Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada to raise funds for research against multiple sclerosis. In eleven years, more than $550,000 will have been raised for the cause. A great success. Unfortunately, the illness got the better of him and Sébastien will not be able to be with us this year, welcoming athletes at the starting line as he so loved to do ... Sébastien, we will miss you terribly. On behalf of all athletes who have participated in the Ultra- Trail Harricana du Canada for the last eleven years as well as those to come as long as the event exists, on behalf of the citizens of Charlevoix who benefit from the positive spin-offs of the event in their region, and on behalf of all people with multiple sclerosis who will benefit from the progress of research on this disease, we say THANK YOU. Your legacy is immense. 2 | 2022 Program UTHC

THE THEME OF 2022 DISCOVERY Whether for the nature, territories, a region, other runners, our own strengths as well as sometimes also our own limits, our inner self and so much more, the ultratrail is certainly a world rich in discoveries. The discovery of trail running at Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada™ is the discovery of the other, the unknown with whom we will share the time of a race. The discovery of your body, its limits perhaps, when you take the path of the ultra. The discovery of a region, the discovery of La Traversée de Charlevoix, of what it is to run in the depths of the woods, far from civilization. The discovery of an organization that seeks continuous improvement and strives to grow without disturbing its environment. The scientific discovery also stimulated by donations to the MSSC... YEARLY VISUAL CREATED BY A LOCAL ARTIST, KARINE LOCATELLI. Known for her uniqueness and sensitivity in combining the art of drawing and photography, the Charlevoix artist Karine Locatelli evokes in this 2022 piece of art the experience of discovering the wilderness of Charlevoix, the encounter with our inner wolf and the pack that accompanies him. We notice the multiple fine cross-hatched lines, the delicacy of the colors, the softness of the tones. The combination is soothing, like what we might feel when surrounded by nature, perhaps even while running. We also feel the contemplation that the great outdoors so often provokes. It’s beautiful, it’s deep and it’s an invitation to explore. 10 | 2022 Program UTHC

A WORD FROM THE 2022 HONORARY PRESIDENT, MATHIEU BLANCHARD Discovery… September 2016. I had just discovered trail running and there I was at the starting line of my first ultra-trail run: the UTHC 80 km. More than just a discovery, it was a revelation. Used to city races on paved roads, I thought it was crazy fun to be all alone in the boreal forest, zig-zagging through thick vegetation, with barely any roads in sight. It’s wild. Rustic. No asphalt on the ground, only rocks and roots… and mud. The smell of damp wood. The range of scenery. I was blown away by the beauty of nature on all sides. And that was it: a new love! And truthfully, it’s even stronger now. Right up until the end, I had no idea I was first. We had started the race at the same time as the 65-km runners. About 30 runners flew ahead of me, but I didn’t know if they were my competitors or not. About 20 kilometre markers from the finish line, at an aid station, I heard a volunteer yell out after noticing the colour of my bib, “Hey, it’s the first in the 80k!” No way! Even though I was starting to get tired and slowing down, that gave me a boost, like mental euphoria. I took off, without eating or drinking anything. There was no way I was going to let anyone catch up to me! 12 | 2022 Program UTHC
I felt strong when I crossed the finish line. I felt like I could have kept running even longer and it was exhilarating. I figured I had potential, that maybe I was made for this sport, for the extremely long ultra-distances. As a young adult, I’d already tried lots of different sports, without really raising to the top in any of them. But there I was, excited to have won my first ultra-trail. It was a joyful and satisfying feeling. And then there was the ambiance, all the smiles and chats with volunteers at the aid stations. The woman pouring beer at the finish, all the deck chairs in the sun where we could chill while going over the run in our head and watching other runners come in. It was a big change from a marathon, where it’s a medal, an emergency blanket and see ya! Since that first UTHC, a whole world has opened up to me, a new land of adventure to explore. I wouldn’t have thought that our bodies—and even less mine—could run such long distances, day and night, in the middle of nature, often on inhospitable trails and backroads. But there were more surprises in store. I began spending hours on YouTube, stuffing myself with videos of unbelievable runs all over the world. I learned the names of people I’d never heard of before, like Kilian Jornet, the ultra star, whose book I ran out to buy immediately. The algorithms of my social media pages went nuts, suggesting dozens of athletes, brands and events to follow. I totally geeked out. Trail running was the only thing I could think about. September 2022. Trail running has helped me discover new horizons, wilderness areas, tight-knit communities, limits and a lifelong sense of fulfillment. I am thrilled to be the 2022 UTHC president of honor and to be back on this beloved Quebec soil where it all began. Mathieu Blanchard ultratrailharricana.com | 13

2022 MEDALS We understand the desire of many runners to have their post-race medal. Many collect them and it is a great source of pride after months and sometimes even years of preparation. We also know that many runners do not feel the need to have medals but prefer to have useful souvenirs in their daily life. In order to meet everyone's expectations, we offer the possibility of exchanging your medal for a $10 discount at the boutique so that you can eventually choose an item that is important to you. Come to the boutique at the race site with your medal to get your discount. Bring back your medal at the Harricana Boutique $ to get a 5$ discount 5 Medals will be reused ! 30 | 2022 Program UTHC
