#31 Dr. Philip Brost Piano Beethoven/Haydn/Mozart (17 years & under) Scholarship - $300 ....................11:00 am
Provincial Class: 10311 Dr. Philip Brost competed in piano, voice, band and solo saxophone in the Prairie Sunset Music Festival for over a
decade. While his family are all gifted musicians in their own right, piano performance was, and is, his forte. In addition to teaching many
young pianists throughout his senior Conservatory years, he was also a Saskatchewan Provincials finalist in piano during his Grade 9 and
Grade 10 years of study. While he chose Medicine as a career and Vancouver as his home, he remains a Saskatchewan born-and-raised
pianist at heart. Wanting to “give back” to the young classical pianists in his home province, he has established this award.

#33 Verna Veikle Memorial Piano Concerto (17 years & under) Scholarship - $300 .................................... 1:15 pm
Provincial Class: 10313 Verna was born and grew up on a farm at Wilbert, Saskatchewan. Even as a young child Verna was drawn to
music. She was ten when her father brought home a piano. This was the beginning of her life as a musician. By the time she was twelve
she was teaching piano lessons for 25 cents per lesson. At sixteen Verna received her Associate in piano from the Royal Toronto
Conservatory (She actually earned the certificate at fifteen, but the regulations stated you had to be sixteen to hold an ARCT.) She played
for church, community events, and with her brothers played music for local dances, sometimes for free, sometimes for $5. In 1941 she
moved to Saskatoon and continued her pursuit of music. She felt very fortunate to have the opportunity to study with Dr. Lyell Gustin. It
was Dr. Gustin who opened the door to her playing for CBC radio. Verna was a very active performer and accompanist in the Saskatoon
music community. In 1947 she married and moved back to the farming community of Wilbert. There she continued to teach, accompany,
lead choirs and perform. In her memory, Verna’s family is pleased to provide this scholarship.
