Protecting Houses of Worship: Lessons learned from Tree of Life Synagogue
Course Description:
Houses of worship have long been flashpoints for religiously and ideologically motivated violence. Recent attacks
are symptomatic of a rise in hostility directed at others on the basis of their religion. The perception of houses of
worship as gathering places for ethnic and religious groups also increases their symbolic value as targets for
politically, religiously and ideologically motivated assailants. We will explore the tragic events that took place at
the Tree of Life Synagogue outside Pittsburg and discuss elements that made a difference and saved lives. We will
identify the lessons learned and share best practices for protecting houses of worship.
