2021 OPP GUARDIANS HALF MARATHON/5K PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
OPP GUARDIANS HALF MARATHON/5KM LETTER FROM THE CHAIR The annual OPP Guardians Half Marathon/5K is the signature provincial run for the Law Enforcement Torch Run, supporting Special Olympics. What started in 2017 with 350 runners and $25,000 raised, grew to raising $40,000 in 2020. A year where the event was fully virtual! This year we are back, with an in-person run happening in Orillia as well as a virtual element based on last year’s success. Over the past 53 years, Special Olympics has grown from a modest program serving local athletes to becoming the world’s largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities, through sports. Special Olympics Ontario has optimized the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle through sport to improve the well-being of individuals with an intellectual disability. The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle with over 90,000 participating Law Enforcement officers across 55 nations. In Ontario, Special Olympics is the charity of choice for the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP). Law Enforcement Services and Agencies run fundraising events year-round under the Torch Run umbrella, including the Guardians Half Marathon & 5KM. This, being a signature event for the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run, means that participants come from all over Ontario to participate; some from as far as Woodstock and Sault Ste Marie! Taking place at OPP Headquarters in Orillia during the early fall, participants enjoy the gorgeous fall colours on a scenic 5k or half marathon route through the city, and have the opportunity to meet athletes from local Special Olympics clubs, who hand them their medals as they cross the finish line. We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to become a part of this growing event by partnering with the Guardians Half Marathon. As an event partner, you will get in front of your existing and potential customers, both local and across the province. Your business will be viewed in a positive light, as an involved member of the community. When asked about their favourite part of the event, participants responded: “My favourite part was having Special Olympics athletes there. Being greeted by them at the finish line was amazing!” “The fall leaves & the portion along the lake. Nice smaller run in attendance with friendly people hosting. Great cause for Special Olympics.” “It was one of the best organized runs I have been to, the amount of water stations was incredible. Well done!” Special Olympics is the world’s largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion, and dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sports training and competition. With programs all across the province, over 26,000 athletes of all ages are participating in Special Olympics Ontario’s programs year round. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics and the Guardians Half Marathon is proud to be a part of this community.
