The historic Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, located in Grosse
Pointe Shores, recently unveiled a 40,000 square-foot Visitor
Center and 17,000 square-foot Administration Building. Both
buildings are built with energy-saving designs that honor the
estate’s heritage.
CADILLAC SQUARE
The Downtown Detroit Markets, created by Bedrock and the
Quicken Loans Family of Companies, returns this holiday season.
From November 2021 through January 2022, local artists,
makers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses will be offering their
products in Cadillac Square.
EASTERN MARKET
Eastern Market, the largest outdoor famer’s market in the United
States (and pride of Detroit), operates year-round. Their annual
holiday market in November and December is perfect for picking
out Thanksgiving produce and local gifts.
HALLOWE’EN IN GREENFIELD VILLAGE
From harvest markets and fall themes to costumed storybook
characters and ghostly performances, the 40-plus-year
Hallowe’en tradition is one of a kind, showcased within the
bewitching setting of Greenfield Village after hours. Runs
throughout October.

Little Caesars Arena in The District Detroit is the home of the
Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons. It also hosts and countless

MUSCATINE ART CENTER: NATURE CONNECTS
Don’t miss Sean Kenney’s larger-than-life sculptures crafted from LEGO bricks reflecting
important topics such as the balance of ecosystems, natural harmony and humanity’s
relationship with nature. On display at the Muscatine Art Center in Muscatine from
November 19, 2021, through February 19, 2022.
REIMAN GARDENS
Newly opened in September, a $3.4 million addition to Reiman Gardens in
Ames includes multiple waterfalls over native limestone walls, sculptural
terraces and a large reflecting pool. An asymmetrical tower structure, rising
more than 40 feet above a viewing deck at the top of the falls, was built
with repurposed wood from downed Iowa State University campus trees.New in ‘22 The Big Splash, Iowa City – A free outdoor extravaganza of music, dance, circus arts and spectacle. Before there was refrigeration, ice was needed to preserve agricultural products and to keep food cold in the warmer months. The Ice Harvest Festival is scheduled for February 5, 2022. John Wayne Birthplace Museum, Winterset – Already home to the largest collection of artifacts from the icon’s career, an expansion that will double exhibit space is scheduled to open in May 2022. Lost Island Theme Park, Waterloo – Slated to open in summer 2022. The $100 million theme park will keep with the Polynesian theme of the Lost Island Waterpark (same owners) and include roller coasters and other thrill rides on nearly 200 acres of farmland. National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, Cedar Rapids – Treasures of Slovakia: One Thousand Years of History runs September 2021 through March 2022. Experience the rich history and culture of Slovakia going back more than 500 years. Treasures of Slovakia was curated by the National Museum in Bratislava. It contains over 120 rare and significant artworks and artifacts; many which have never left Slovakia before. Paws and Pints, West Des Moines – The metro’s first place where dogs and dog owners can both enjoy an indoor and outdoor off-leash dog park, bar, coffeehouse and more, is scheduled to open in spring 2022. The facility will offer dog training, an on-site vet, live music, food trucks and a canine hotel and spa. Viking Cruises – Scheduled to start cruising the Mississippi River in September 2022. Tours will dock in Burlington, Davenport and Dubuque. Legacy Plaza Hotel, Newton – Former Maytag factory buildings will be repurposed into the latest project by hotelier Angela Harrington (Hotel Grinnell and Highlander Hotel). The hotel will celebrate the legacy of the industrial era from which it came with fixtures and finishes inspired by Restoration Hardware to give guests an experience unlike any found in Iowa. Subtle nods to the building’s history will surprise and delight guests at every turn. The property is projected to open in late 2022.

amphitheater and an auditorium along with the observatory dome housing a 20” PlaneWave

vanishing resource for inspiration and creative genius that is largely overlooked in a developed

Spring Raptor Count: We like to think of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan as a mitten but to
birds of prey migrating north to their breeding grounds in the Upper Peninsula and Canada it’s
more of a funnel.
These raptors (mostly Eagles and Hawks) migrate during the day utilizing updrafts (or rising
columns of air called thermals) without flapping and then glide to another thermal. But where
Lakes Michigan and Huron meet at the Straits of Mackinac a migratory thermal roadblock
occurs with five miles of open water. From March 8 to May 30 the Straits Area Raptor Watch
does an annual count of the migration and in 2019 tallied 65,561 raptors of 19 different species
including over 44,000 Broad Winged Hawks, over 13,000 Red-tailed hawks, over 500 Bald
Eagles, and over 225 Golden Eagles - the largest count among the 80 hawk-watch sites in North

They’re part of a larger Tip of the Mitt American Viticultural Area (AVA) which encompasses 2,760- square miles throughout 6 counties in the northern Lower Peninsula. Established in August 2016, the Tip of the Mitt is the latest of five federally recognized AVA’s in Michigan. Located further north than any of the other AVA’s, the Tip of the Mitt region offers a unique set of challenges and opportunities when it comes to growing grapes. Lake effective conditions from Little Traverse Bay and the Straits of Mackinac often create colder and windier winter seasons, meaning varietals typically planted downstate can not withstand the harsh conditions.
