Respect for our traditions, our culture and our environment have kept the descendants of the early cottage owners returning for generations and preserved the small-town charm that visitors love. But don’t think that a quaint northern setting means a lack of sophistication, you’ll discover that fine art, culture, boutique shopping, outdoor recreation, and more are just minutes away. Dark Sky Park Unveils New Pavilion: After years of planning and construction the Headlands International Dark Sky Park (the 9th in the world!) dedicated and officially opened their new $7 million Waterfront Observatory and Event Center on the 2017 Summer Solstice, June 22. The new project features both an amphitheater and an auditorium along with the observatory dome housing a 20” PlaneWave telescope. Mary Stewart Adams, former Program Director at the Dark Sky Park says: “Michigan can be proud of its leadership role in protecting such a resource. A deep dark night is a vanishing resource for inspiration and creative genius that is largely overlooked in a developed world.” The Headlands takes the night sky seriously with free monthly educational programs and an open invitation to anyone to come any night (or even day) of the year for free and see what they’ve been missing. darksky@emmetcounty.org / www.MIdarkskypark.org Spring Raptor Count: We like to think of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan as a mitten but to birds of prey migrating north to their breeding grounds in the Upper Peninsula and Canada it’s more of a funnel. These raptors (mostly Eagles and Hawks) migrate during the day utilizing updrafts (or rising columns of air called thermals) without flapping and then glide to another thermal. But where Lakes Michigan and Huron meet at the Straits of Mackinac a migratory thermal roadblock occurs with five miles of open water. From March 8 to May 30 the Straits Area Raptor Watch does an annual count of the migration and in 2019 tallied 65,561 raptors of 19 different species including over 44,000 Broad Winged Hawks, over 13,000 Red-tailed hawks, over 500 Bald Eagles, and over 225 Golden Eagles - the largest count among the 80 hawk-watch sites in North America! The ‘aerial waltz’ begins as the morning sun warms the earth and best viewing is midday near the Headlands Dark Sky Park. Contact: Ed Pike edandanne6750@gmail.com / www.mackinacraptorwatch.org
Petoskey Wine Region: The 14 wineries that make up the Petoskey Wine Region are located in and around the greater Petoskey area, not far from Little Traverse Bay. They’re part of a larger Tip of the Mitt American Viticultural Area (AVA) which encompasses 2,760- square miles throughout 6 counties in the northern Lower Peninsula. Established in August 2016, the Tip of the Mitt is the latest of five federally recognized AVA’s in Michigan. Located further north than any of the other AVA’s, the Tip of the Mitt region offers a unique set of challenges and opportunities when it comes to growing grapes. Lake effective conditions from Little Traverse Bay and the Straits of Mackinac often create colder and windier winter seasons, meaning varietals typically planted downstate can not withstand the harsh conditions. Hybrid varietals such as Marquette, Frontenac, Lemberger, Traminette, Vignoles and a dozen others represent new standards in cold, hardy viticulture and enology. www.petoskey.wine Petoskey Brewing: The four-story brick brewery was built in 1898 and operated until Emmet County went ‘dry’ in 1915 (the state of Michigan went ‘dry’ on May 1, 1918) and didn’t resume brewing until 2012. Experience made on-premises hand-crafted beer, weekend entertainment and light food offerings make it a favorite for a step-back (and sip-back) in history! www.petoskeybrewing.com 1844 M-119, Petoskey 49770 / 231.753.2057 Ernest Hemingway: From infancy to the age of 22, the famous author spent his summers on Walloon Lake and Horton Bay (except his well-publicized year in Italy during World War I). The Nobel Prize winner stayed at Eva Potter's rooming house at State and Woodland Streets to get away from his parents and to do some serious writing. He was also a frequent visitor to the Noggin Room located in the Perry Hotel (now Stafford's Perry Hotel) and the City Park Grill (2nd stool from the end of the bar). In 1916, Hemingway returned to the area after a fishing trip that formed the background to his classic short story, "The Battler." Hemingway returned in 1919 to recover from his war wounds, married Hadley Richardson in Horton Bay in 1921, and immortalized many area places and friends in "Up in Michigan," "The End of Something," "Torrents of Spring" and the “Nick Adams Stories.” www.michiganhemingwaysociety.org Bay View Association: Bay View was founded in 1875 by Michigan Methodists as a camp meeting "for intellectual and scientific culture and the promotion of the cause of religion and morality." Today it’s best recognized as a National Historic Landmark with 440 Victorian cottages and as a summer Chautauqua with its nationally renowned Music Festival which is currently recognized as the longest reigning music festival in the United States. The packed 2019 agenda included the musical West Side Story and the opera The Magic Flute, and much more. www.bayviewfestival.org Beaver Island: This was the only kingdom ever to have existed in the United States and was ruled by King Strang and his Mormon “Saints” for six years during the 1850’s. King Strang was defeated at the Battle of Pine River and then was assassinated in 1856. The remaining “Saints” were ejected from the island. Irish immigrants repopulated the island and its Irish heritage is very much in evidence today. The Beaver Island Boat Company provides passage to and from the island between mid-April and December. www.beaverisland.org
