THE GAFFER I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Rothwell Corinthians who are this evening's visitors to the Sett. Tonight’s fixture represents our first game back at Step 5 of the Pyramid and whilst it may not have been achieved in the manner that any of us wanted, promotion to the newly formed United Counties League South is just reward for our efforts over the course of two disrupted seasons. With promotion secured we have moved quickly to add both experience and quality to an established “Promotion to the squad with Dan White being the only notable newly formed departure over the summer. United Counties The summer has also seen changes to the League South is management team with Dale Walton having taken the just reward for our reigns of the Reserve Team. With several youthful efforts” additions, I am looking forward to working with Dale and the players as we look to bring further success to the club over the course of the season. That said make no bones about it, moving up to Step 5 will pose a significant challenge as we come up against Some well established clubs who have large budgets to play with; rest assured we are up for the challenge! Anyway, enjoy the game, lets hope we end the evening with our first 3 points on the board before we Programme Contributions: start our journey on the road to Wembley when March Town United are the visitors for Saturday’s FA Cup tie. Editor: Nick Inwood Photography: Finbarr Carroll I hope to see you back at the Sett soon. Jamie
THE FUTURE SETT Whilst football has stood still there has been plenty happening behind the scenes at the Sett during lockdown. Back in May we received confirmation that Bugbrooke St Michaels had been awarded a grant from the Premier League, The six-year tapered grant, part of the Foundation’s Grass Pitch Maintenance Fund, will help us to improve the quality of our grassroots pitches at Bugbrooke. The investment was provided following the completion of a pitch inspection using the Football Foundation’s specially developed app, PitchPower, which is a mobile tool used for assessing the quality of grass football pitches. We will now be able to use the grant to complete the maintenance work identified in their PitchPower Assessment Report, which includes applying fertiliser, aeration, seeding and other maintenance practices. These grants are key to the Foundation’s aim to help create 5,000 more quality pitches before the end of 2024, in line with the FA’s Grassroots Strategy. Alongside its PitchPower assessment tool, the Football Foundation has also created an online grounds keeping community called The Hive to provide expert support and advice to clubs. Anyone can find out more and sign up at https://footballfoundation.org.uk/grass-pitch-improvement “Nick Inwood, Youth Secretary and Under 12s Blue Coach said: As an expanding and progressive club we have a high level of demand on our grass pitches. In securing this grant it will enable us to undertake a schedule of works that will improve the quality of pitches at Bugbrooke thus providing better playing surfaces for our users. With this being a 6-year programme, it further highlights our commitment to long term improvement and sustainability of our facility. This work represents another step on our journey, with the club having recently placed an order for four new sets of 11v11 goals on wheels which again will contribute significantly towards our ambition of providing the best facilities that we can – we are extremely grateful to the Football Foundation and their partners for their support”
Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “This grant award to Bugbrooke St Michaels for improvements to the quality of their grass pitches is vital for the local community as they get back to playing football. Our Grass Pitch Maintenance Fund is supporting clubs across the country, helping them enhance and sustain their pitches to improve access to good quality facilities for grassroots players.” “This is part of our wider ambition to get more people involved in football, regardless of their background, age or ability. By unlocking the power of pitches, we can help transform the lives of players and strengthen communities through the nation’s favourite game.” The Grass Pitch Maintenance Fund provides eligible clubs and leagues with a tapered six-year grant to help them sustain pitches already at a 'good' level or higher and enhance pitches that are either considered 'poor' or 'basic’. Hot on the heels of this at the end of June we were able to confirm that we have been successful in securing funding via a Football Foundation Stadia Grant that will enable us to replace the perimeter fencing, pitch rails and ball stop nets behind the goals. This represents phase one of our planned ground improvements with phase two being the installation of a new covered spectator facility, something that we hope will follow later in the year. This work is being undertaken with a view to us achieving the ground grading that is required for Step 5 football. This represents another significant step forward for the club as earlier in June we were able to purchase four new sets of 11v11 goals for use by our grassroots teams. We pride ourselves on being a community club and whilst it will take time for our members to reap the rewards, we hope that the investment that we are making demonstrates our ambition to provide the best possible facilities that we can.
TODAY’S VISITORS ROTHWELL CORINTHIANS This evening’s visitors Rothwell Corinthians began to play competitive football when they joined the Kettering and District Amateur League in 1934 . The idea of the team was first put forward in a terrace house in Littlewood Street. At that time, the league had three divisions and the Corinthians were placed in the Second Division. When football resumed after the Second World War, the Corinthians were playing at the old recreation ground. This venue was their headquarters for most of the the next twenty years. The Corinthians introduced their first Reserve Team into the league in 1950 and, nine years later, they brought the first senior league honours to the club when they became Champions of Division Three. The following season the first team won the First Division Championship, and they repeated this feat in 1964. However, the following season they were relegated and by the end of the decade they found themselves in the Third Division. It was not until 1979 that they began to get themselves noticed again as they were promoted to the First Division and also managed to reach the N.F.A. Area Cup Final. The 1980-81 season marked the beginning of the emergence of the club as we know it today. With the move to Rothwell Town’s Cricket Ground came a more professional approach to the organisation of the club. Coinciding with this the League had re-styled itself as the East Midlands Alliance and lifted its standards, a move much appreciated by the Corinthians. In 1984 the Corinthians gained promotion to the Premier Division. Meanwhile, behind the scenes the club had purchased the land on which the present facilities are located. These facilities were officially opened by Northampton Town in 1986. Season 1989-90 saw the Corinthians lift their first Premier Division Championship. The season 1994-95 saw them secure their second Premier Championship, and after consultation with the United Counties league Management Committee, promotion was secured. Recent seasons has seen three appearances in the Northamptonshire Junior Cup Final with a win registered in 2008 Promotion to the United Counties Premier Division was achieved the same season under the management of Frank Lelapi assisted by Paul Smith. With Lelapi and Smith standing down after one season at the higher-level Corinthians changed managers each of the following two seasons but struggled in their time at Step 5. They still managed however to win the Youth League Cup and Reserve Supplementary Cup in 2009/10 but the First team dropped back down into UCL Division 1. Shaun Sparrow joined as manager rejuvenating the club with promotion back to the Premier Division in 2015 and more recently with Jim Scott as joint manager saw three mid table finishes. The Reserves have also had recent success with two UCL knockout Cup Finals in 2016 and 2017 , winning the first, and were losing finalists in the NFA lower Junior Cup in 2014. Our former Manager Mitch Austin took the reigns for the 2019/20 season and led the team to the 1st Qualifying round of the FA Cup and the UCL Knockout Cup Final before its curtailment.
