2021-2022 Audition Information Texas A&M University College Station, TX Prospective Member: Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Aggie Dance Team! Our team serves as an ambassador of Texas A&M University and helps promote spirit at several athletic events including all Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball, as well as other events for our school and community. We also represent Texas A&M at a national dance competition. We are looking for well-rounded young ladies who are confident, talented, dedicated, humble, respectful and passionate to be a part of the 2021 – 2022 Aggie Dance Team. Team members are responsible for representing Texas A&M in the classroom, on the field/court, and other various platforms. Being a member of our team comes with several exciting opportunities but is also a major commitment. Being a member of Aggie Dance Team is a privilege and not a right, everything that comes with being a member is earned and not given. Please read through this packet carefully to better understand our program.
Aggie Dance Team Program Overview Overview: As a member of the Aggie Dance Team it is your responsibility to be present at all practices, workouts, games and events. Conflicts: The below dates are mandatory. Any conflicts of the dates must be discussed prior to audition weekend via email. Summer Dates: ● July 10th – Dance Intensive – Returning members mandatory, new members optional ● August 20th – 27th – Team Camp Fall Schedule: ● Tuesday/Thursday 5:30-7:30 AM ● Sunday 1:00-4:00 PM or 5:00-8:00 PM ● Saturday rehearsals when necessary ● Wednesday at 6 AM team workout, as well as additional individual workout ● Mandatory to attend all home football games, basketball games and selected soccer/volleyball games ● Some games will occur during Thanksgiving and Winter Break - they are mandatory ● Shortened Winter Break – Mandatory camp weeks Spring Practice Schedule: ● Tuesday/Thursday 5:30-7:30 AM ● Sunday 1:00-4:00 PM or 5:00-8:00 PM ● Shortened Spring Break – Mandatory camp week ● Wednesday at 6 AM team workout, as well as additional individual workout ● Mandatory to attend all basketball games ● SEC and NCAA basketball tournaments for Men & Women’s Basketball AUDITION REQUIREMENTS, SCHEDULE OF EVENTS, AND WAIVER ARE INCLUDED IN THIS PACKET. Aggie Dance Team Audition Information and Requirements ● All applications are due in their entirety by May, 28th 2021. Applications should be emailed to aggiedanceteam@athletics.tamu.edu. ● A $50 non-refundable tryout application fee is required. Emailed copy of receipt with application. Payment link can be found on 12thman.com/danceteam. ● Incoming freshmen and transfer students must be accepted to Texas A&M University (or Blinn TEAM program) before the first day of auditions (submit copy of acceptance letter with application) if you have not been accepted by May 28th, please state that in your email and hold off on paying application fee until acceptance. If you advance to the in person audition weekend, you must receive admittance by June 25th. ● Current and transfer students must have a cumulative and current GPA of 2.0 or above (submit an unofficial copy of transcript with application) ● 2021-2022 Aggie Dance Team members must maintain full-time student status (12 hours per semester) and maintain a 2.5 GPA to remain eligible. ● Candidates must have no health issues that will hinder their ability to perform as an Aggie Dance Team member, therefore, causing required activities to be considered unsafe to their health (include proof of recent physical that is within 1 year of tryout date with application) ● Team members must maintain medical insurance as a member of the Aggie Dance Team (submit copy of medical insurance card (BOTH SIDES) with application) ● Audition Attire : o Top: Dance crop top or athletic sports bra (any color/can be embellished) **midriff/stomach must be showing** o Bottom: Black dance “hot”/spandex shorts, low-waist shorts only and skin colored tights o Shoes: Bring tan/black jazz shoes or half sole AND sneakers o Makeup: “Natural” stage/performance makeup, wear a darker lipstick (no nude lipstick) o Hair: Wear completely down, curled– no poofs, braids, etc. o Jewelry: Stud earrings allowed in ears only. No other jewelry permitted (Aggie Rings/engagement rings are okay). o NO TATTOOS showing while in audition attire! ● Skills (not limited to the following): o Turns – Pirouettes (Triple/Quad/Quint), Fouettes in Second(minimum 2 eight counts), Leg Hold Turn o Leaps – Grande Jete, Calypso, Center Leap, Turning Center, Tilt, and Switch Tilt o Tricks – Head Spring, Aerial, Toe Touch, Leg Extension(Penche, Tilt Extension, Side Extension, Back Extension) ● During the conditioning evaluation at the invitational weekend we are looking for mental toughness, physical fitness, will power and preparation. ● Video submission information will be emailed out to all applicants on the morning of May 29th. Applications should be emailed to aggiedanceteam@athletics.tamu.edu. ● Video tryout submission due June 11th - video Tryout Requirements will be sent out on May 29th to applicants who register for tryouts. ● Video results sent June 13th – invitation sent to those who are selected to attend the in person audition weekend on June 26th and 27th ● Live Audition Weekend – June 26th and 27th Saturday CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC! Individual Interviews – new candidates only (returning members must complete End of Year Evaluation Interview) Learn two dance combinations Conditioning Evaluation Across the floor/improvisation Sunday CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC! Perform video material submitted Perform dance combinations learned prior day Announcement of 2021-2022 Aggie Dance Team Aggie Dance Team Covid-19 Policies for In Person Weekend ● Dancers must wear face covering the entire time. ● A 14 day temperature tracking form will be emailed on June 13th with invitation that must be completed and brought in for the weekend auditions. ● Temperature checks will be done upon entering the facility each day and after breaks. ● Social distancing will be strictly enforced the entire time we are together. Aggie Dance Team Q&A WHAT TYPE OF DANCER ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? We are looking for fit, talented, performers who are skilled in jazz, hip- hop, and pom. Although we perform multiple styles, dancers with specific training in one style are welcome and encouraged to audition. We are looking for a well-rounded young lady who will also be a great teammate and team member. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE THE AGGIE DANCE TEAM? Proper Dance Technique & Skills Showmanship & Projection Versatile Dancer – All Styles Physical Fitness & Appearance Personality & Enthusiasm Overall Impression WHAT DANCE SKILLS SHOULD I BE ABLE TO EXECUTE? Dancers should be able to execute the following skills. These and other dance skills could be incorporated into the audition dances, but and are not limited to the following. o Turns – Pirouettes (Triple/Quad/Quint), Fouettes in Second(minimum 2 eight counts), Leg Hold Turn o Leaps – Grande Jete, Calypso, Center Leap, Turning Center o Tricks – Head Spring, Aerial, Toe Touch, Leg Extension(Penche, Tilt Extension, Side Extension, Back Extension) HOW SHOULD I WEAR MY MAKE-UP AND HAIR? Use makeup shades that complement your natural beauty, but at the same time accentuate your face from the court. Hair should be worn completely down (nothing pinned back). Face and hair should be considered “game day ready”. Spray tans are recommended, but not required. (Tip: Aggie Dance Team members are required to curl their hair for game day performances. Natural curly hair is accepted as long as it is professional looking and groomed). WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO AUDITIONS? You should wear a 2-piece dance attire of your choice (to be worn on both audition days). Top – crop top or athletic sports bra top (may be any color/embellished); Bottom – dance “hot”/spandex shorts (must be black). Wear something that distinguishes you from other dancers! Skin colored tights must be worn. Jazz shoes/split sole and sneakers are required – please bring both to auditions. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO AUDITIONS? Bring makeup/hair products (for touchups throughout the day), warmups/cover ups, jazz shoes, sneakers, snacks, and water. Stay hydrated! ARE THERE ANY HEIGHT AND WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS? We do not have specific height and weight requirements. CAN MY FAMILY WATCH AUDITONS? No. Aggie Dance Team Auditions are closed to the public. IF I CANNOT ATTEND THE AUDITION, MAY I SUBMIT A VIDEO? Video auditions will be accepted on a case by case basis. Prior arrangements must be made with the coach immediately following application submission. MAY I SUBMIT MY PACKET ON THE DAY OF AUDITIONS? No, all applications must be emailed to aggiedanceteam@athletics.tamu.edu by Friday May 28th. HOW MANY PEOPLE AUDITON? The number of applicants will vary from year to year. WHAT ARE PRACTICES LIKE? The Aggie Dance Team practices 3 times per week. Additional weekend rehearsals will be called as necessary. DOES THE PROGRAM COMPETE AT NATIONALS? Yes. DO YOU OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS OR OUT OF STATE TUITION WAIVERS? All ADT members will have an opportunity to apply for the Brenda, Glenn Dresner ’69 and Lindsey Duke ’06 Endowed Aggie Dance Team Scholarship at the beginning of the season. One scholarship of roughly $1,000 per year ($500 per semester) will be awarded each season. However, ADT pays for and provides the following items to all team members: uniforms, shoes, tights, poms, warmups, makeup stipend, and fitness membership. Page 6
All tournament travel expenses are paid and per diem will be provided for games that take place during the holiday break or at tournaments. Out of State Tuition Waivers are not available. DO I HAVE TO ATTEND AN AGGIE DANCE TEAM PREP CLASS? No. It is not required to attend a prep clinic, but it is encouraged. You will be able to ask questions to current dance team members and become familiar with the team’s dance style by learning something similar to a routine done during the prior year. HOW MANY DANCERS MAKE THE TEAM? We do not have a maximum number of dancers, which means we have the ability to increase/decrease the number of dancers based on the needs of the team. CAN I BELONG TO OTHER DANCE TEAMS AND/OR DANCE GROUPS? Yes. However, Aggie Dance Team performances, practices, and events must come before extracurricular activities associated with other dance groups. Missing a required ADT practice or function due to other dance group conflicts will result in an unexcused absence. Absences will not be accepted for weekend rehearsals. ARE THERE ANY SUMMER REQUIREMENTS? Yes, we will have team camp in August. Practices will begin the first week of Fall 2021 classes. Team members are strongly encouraged to take dance classes and work out during the summer months in preparation for fall. Page 7
