The City of Fort Saskatchewan is proud to be home to residents that value community and have contributed so greatly to all that we are today. As we grow in numbers and in age there are resources and services we may be ready to access. Family and Community Support Services hopes that this calendar can provide information as well as connection to those services in the community. Thank you all for choosing Fort Saskatchewan as your home.
Decluttering It’s a new year and a perfect time to organize your home. Consider these ideas: • Purge & declutter often. Remove 10 articles of clothing from your closet that you no longer wear. Remove decorations from shelves, tables and walls that aren’t meaningful. Discard items you don’t use, if you’re not using it now you won’t need it later. • Fold & put away clean clothes immediately, remove any dirty clothes to laundry hamper right away. • If you want to keep that souvenir mug just limit it to 1 or 2. • Once you’ve finished with your magazine or newspaper recycle it immediately. • Be choosy about what you allow in the home. Remember the replacement rule if one thing comes in one must leave. Computer Safety Practicing cyber safety is very important to protecting your identity and sensitive personal information. Below are some helpful tips: • Create strong passwords. A strong password contains a mix of letters, numbers and symbols and is at least 12 characters long. • Secure access to your accounts. Passwords can be stolen so adding two-step authentication to accounts provides a second layer of protection. • Think before you act. Emails that create a sense of urgency such as a problem with your bank account or taxes is likely a scam. Call your bank directly to verify. • If you aren’t sure why you got a link, or an email looks unusual, just delete it. • Limit what you are sharing in emails or on social media. Adjust your privacy settings to avoid sharing your location. • Use security software. • Log out when you are done using a website or app. • Consider support from other adult family members or grandchildren who are more tech savvy. Falls Prevention Anyone can fall. But as we age, our risk of falling becomes greater. That’s the bad news. The good news is that falls can be prevented. The first step to avoiding falls is to understand what causes them. For example, poor balance, decreased muscle and bone strength, reduced vision or hearing, and unsafe conditions in and around your home can increase your chance of falling. Staying safe and on your feet is a matter of taking some steps to protect yourself. You can prevent falls by making the needed adjustments to your home and lifestyle, and by making sure you eat well, stay fit, and use whatever devices will facilitate your daily life while keeping you safe. Your independence and well-being are at stake. Take action! Cooking For One Cooking for 1 or 2 can be daunting but it doesn’t have to be. You can still prepare healthy and tasty meals on a budget. Some simple rules for eating healthy include: • Make a meal plan and write it down for the entire week. Do your grocery shopping from this plan. • Prep versatile ingredients for the week. Wash and chop vegetables, cook some rice or pasta and then store in the refrigerator in tightly sealed containers. • Prepare complete balanced meals when you have the most energy. This may mean you have your main meal at lunch. • Freeze leftovers for another day in single portions to be taken out and quickly thawed on a day when you just don’t feel like cooking.
