OUR STORIES Big Brother and Little Brother of the Year When Peggy signed her grandson Jaylin up for a Big Brother, she believed he could benefit from a program that would give him an outlet to leave behind the thoughts and fears of his circumstances. If only for a few hours a month, she wanted him to have the opportunity to be a kid. Matt Barnes grew up in a household where he felt loved and supported everyday. He had many teachers, coaches, and professors who significantly impacted him during his formative years and it is these mentors that inspired him to want to do the same. Little Brother Jaylin and Big Brother Matt were matched in March 2016 and their story is certainly a testament to the human spirit, demonstrating that no matter where you start, with the right support anything is possible. Recognized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as the 2020 Big Brother and Little Brother of the Year you can view their story here: HTTPS://YOUTU.BE/ONKU7AAJITO “ I appreciate everything Matt has done for me and how he’s helped me grow as a man, especially in this type of society.” — LITTLE BROTHER JAYLIN Big Hero Big Sister Katie-Lynn Dheel was named a BIG Hero by The Columbus Foundation. Katie-Lynn became a Big because she wanted to use her down time to have an impact and that’s exactly what she’s done. During the stay at home order, Katie-Lynn became aware that her Little sister’s family had some unmet needs so she sprung into action, mobilizing her family and friends to help. With the support she was able to raise, Katie-Lynn loaded up her SUV with groceries, essential items, and even hay for the family’s pet rabbit. Her Little Sister’s family was exceptionally grateful and Katie-Lynn was overwhelmed by the way her family and friends stepped up to help. “I would have been more than understanding with some well-wishes and maybe even some donated dry goods, but the response I got instilled a new hope in me for the future, and helped me realize how easy it can be to make a difference in someone’s life.” B I G B R O T H E R S B I G S I S T E R S C E N T R A L O H I O // 2 0 20 IMPACT R E P O R T // 5
