DWNC 2020 CALL TO CONVENTION www.DemocraticWomenofNC.org 2020 Call to Convention Organize. Agitate. Educate DWNC’s 60th Annual State Convention September 25th – 27th, 2020 President’s Message On behalf of the Democratic Women of North Carolina, it is my honor to invite you to join us for our 60th Annual State Convention, September 25-27, 2020. This will be our first virtual Convention and we are excited to have the opportunity to join you online as we celebrate the 100th year since the passing of the 19th Amendment. We’ve got a great convention lined up for you, with: • workshops provided by the National Democratic Training Committee, • special keynotes and greetings from Governor Roy Cooper, Chief Justice Cheri Beasley and our NC Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green (with even more to be announced), • a suffragette lecture from Dr. Ellen DuBois, retired UCLA professor & author of Suffrage: Women’s Long Battle for the Vote, • candidate speed dating, Drinks with DWNC, zetworking, Sip N Paint, two nights at the movies, • and, of course we’ll be capping off our year of hard work with awards ceremonies for STARS and presenting our Woman of the Year award, making time to honor the sheroes who live and breathe and walk amongst us and are leading the way in membership, communication, and activism. As we prepare for this convention, I’ve been thinking about the suffragettes below. Of course we celebrate the passage of the 19th Amendment, but we do so knowing that not all American women were granted the vote that year, and admittedly the struggle for gender equality continues today. Join us & discover why millions of 20th-century Americans mobilized for, & against, suffrage. The Vote brings to life the unsung leaders of the movement and the deep controversies over gender roles and race that divided Americans then, and continue to dominate political discourse today.”
DWNC 2020 CALL TO CONVENTION www.DemocraticWomenofNC.org Proposed Amendments: Constitution & Bylaws The Democratic Women of North Carolina Constitution and Bylaws Committee put forth the following amendments: I. Amendment to Define Executive Committee and Board Composition II. Amendment to change elections of officers from the even year to the odd year. The rationale for changes: I. Amendment to Define Executive Committee and Board Composition: According to our current Constitution and Bylaws, we use the terms “Executive Committee” and “Executive Board,” interchangeably. We do not use or have a defined term for “Board.” Currently, our existing governing body is composed of: elected officers (6), appointees (4), standing committee chairs (13), special committee chairs, regional directors (12), Congressional District Reps (13), immediate past president, DNC Committeewoman, and NCDP Chair or Vice-Chair. With a total of 45-50 people responsible for reviewing the ordinary business of the organization and for advising the president, it is impossible for us to be nimble and responsive. It is our proposal that with these changes, the “Executive Committee” would now consist of only the 22-24 elected officers and appointed committee chairs who would assist the president with the business of the organization. Our existing governing body of 45-50 people will now be called the “Board” and will be responsible for reviewing and approving the decisions of the “Executive Committee.” II. Amendment to change elections of officers from the even year to the odd year Currently, the election of the DWNC leadership coincides with either the mid-term election cycle or the presidential election cycle. By moving our elections into odd years, and eliminating the delay in assuming office, the elected leadership will have the opportunity to be in place for a full election cycle to accomplish the mission of electing Democrats. Electing in the even year makes it difficult to recruit good nominees to step into leadership roles. Women who want to move up the leadership pipeline are often heavily involved with campaigns, local GOTV efforts, and local DW chapter efforts to elect Democrats. They feel that it is too much to consider taking on the additional task of moving into state DW leadership roles. This change would also allow the DWNC to align itself with the election of NCDP leadership. As required in our Bylaws, these 2020 Proposed Amendments to the DWNC Constitution and Bylaws may be found online at: www.DemocraticWomenofNC.org. • Both the Nominating Committee & the Constitution & Bylaws Committee have voiced their support for these proposed changes to our bylaws. If these changes pass, they will go into effect immediately and the current DWNC Officers will remain in their current positions thru Convention 2021 when we will transition into our new election schedule and elect new officers. DWNC 2020 CALL TO CONVENTION www.DemocraticWomenofNC.org President’s Message Continued… When I think about this year’s election, I know the stakes are higher than ever. We cannot stop making good trouble until all women are free-- free from sexism, free from prejudice, free from discrimination, free from racism. And though we may from time to time grow weary, let us ever be reminded of those who for years put their lives on the line for our right to not only cast a ballot, but indeed, to simply exist, in all of our womanness. As Carrie Chapman Catt said, "hundreds of women gave the accumulated possibilities of an entire lifetime, thousands gave years of their lives, hundreds of thousands gave constant interest and such aid as they could," just to "get the word male, in effect, out of the Constitution." What then do our children, and our children's children, and our children's children's children require of us in this pivotal moment? I believe we find our call in the rallying words of Susan B. Anthony who declared, "Organize, agitate, educate, must be our war cry.” It is in this spirit that I call each of you to Convention 2020 this year. Come and find the resources you need to build great chapters and continue our work for another 60 years. Come prepared to learn about white fragility, immigration and poverty so that we might indeed be the change we wish to see in the world. Come and be inspired by our female candidates and elected officials leading the way. And come to seek solace from your sisters on the same journey. The Democratic Women of North Carolina is a mighty sisterhood and to paraphrase Sister Sojourner Truth, if we want any rights more than we got, we should be doing more than just talking about it. DWNC 2020 CALL TO CONVENTION www.DemocraticWomenofNC.org It’s a Virtual Convention! This year we’re going to do something we’ve never done before! In addition to sweeping the State Senate and State House seats, re-electing Governor Cooper, sending Cal Cunningham to Washington, and electing Democrats up and down the ballot, we’re also going to be holding our very 1st virtual convention. Sometimes, doing things for the first time can be like my initial experience road-cycling. I slipped and tumbled, but eventually I got the hang of things. Your DWNC Officers have taken things in stride during this unprecedented season & we’re excited about the roll-out of our very own DWNC Virtual Convention App. Just like our Zoom Drinks on Thursdays, we’re adding a new tech experience to your toolbox and we promise to help make this a successful experience for you. We’ve worked hard to take all the in-person components of a successful convention & turn those into virtual opportunities for you to set your own agenda, hear from our speakers, participate in our trainings, check out our sponsors, vote at our board meeting and yes--- even hang out with your friends. The app really is plug and play, but we’re also offering training leading up to convention, and every morning of convention, so that you’ll be comfortable knowing “what button to click when…”in order to make the most of this virtual experience. We know too that nobody wants to sit in front of a screen all day, so we’ve tailored our live sessions to 90 minute segments so you may choose which parts of the convention you tune in for. Whether you come one day, or even part of a day, we promise that if you can send an email, you will be able to use this technology and join us for Convention 2020. Who knows, it may be like my cycling. We may all decide that we like this so much we need to offer virtual options in the future!!
