ENGINE The JET SKI® SX-R™ offers double the power for a higher top speed than the venerable JET SKI 800 SX-R. The flat torque curve ensures that the big power is available from very low rpm so that the SX-R’s off-the line acceleration (0-50 m) is even stronger than that of Kawasaki’s supercharged JET SKI ULTRA® 310R. 1,498cc 4-Cylinder, DOHC, 4-Stroke Engine • Legendary Ninja® motorcycle inspired engine adapted for personal watercraft use. • Chrome composite plated(KP) cylinders are lightweight, durable, and quickly carry heat away from the combustion chamber and piston for supreme durability at high power output. • Narrow valve angles allow a highly efficient combustion chamber shape. • Front camshaft drive allows for an extremely tight valve angle for efficient engine breathing. With the drive on the front end of the crankshaft, the short, highly rigid crankshaft offers tremendous torsional rigidity and facilitates small bearing journal sizes for low frictional loss. The forged crankshaft rides in five plain bearings. • Semi-dry sump(KP) oil system. • Unique crankcase venting system prevents oil from entering the intake tract if the watercraft is capsized. Digital Fuel Injection (KP) • Large 60mm throttle body with injectors at each cylinder. • Composite intake manifold designed with feedback from the ULTRA® 310 series models contributes to low-rpm acceleration and response. • Large capacity, low-noise airbox. • Fuel pump has a built-in pressure regulator to simplify fuel line arrangements. Water-Jacketed Semi-Dry Exhaust System • Double-walled, water-cooled exhaust manifold provides efficient cooling and helps reduce noise. • Water surrounding the exhaust system lowers engine compartment temperatures for increased power. • Semi-dry exhaust system keeps cooling water out of the exhaust before the waterbox to prevent water from entering the engine if the boat should capsize. PROPULSION Jet Pump • High-rpm jet pump contributes to the SX-R’s top speed and acceleration. • 148mm oval-edged, three-blade, cast stainless-steel impeller delivers strong acceleration, high efficiency and low cavitation. Tough cast stainless-steel is less likely to suffer damage, helping to prevent cavitation erosion. • A cast-aluminium steering nozzle transfers the engine’s massive thrust. Specially designed for the SX-R, the nozzle (87mm in diameter, 102mm long) ensures the light operation ideal for a stand-up machine. • Low-resistance stainless steel intake grate is based on the highly efficient grate of the 800 SX-R.
HULL Fiberglass Hull • The V-shape hull design offers an ideal combination of stability and cornering performance. • The engine is positioned low and closer to the rider which contributes to stability. • Exceptional turning performance provides riders with the option of making deeply-banked turns or cornering using less lean angle. • Injection-molded sponsons contribute to overall stability as well as sharp, clean turning performance and a very solid feel when banking. • Exclusive Kawasaki Splash Deflector (KSD) strip on the forward section of the hull reduces water splash, especially at speed and in rough water. • The hull sits high in the water, contributing to stability when stopped or moving at very low speeds, as well as making it easy to board. • Integrated floatation cells make the SX-R resistant to sinking. HULL CONTINUED Deck & Rider Tray • The rider tray features a large, wide floor area – especially at the front – for great freedom of movement. • The rider tray has a forward slant to help riders brace against the SX-R’s strong acceleration, and a raised portion at the rear provides a place to plant the rear foot for greater stability. • The high side deck fins are easy to use as a point of leverage for the legs. Pads on the inside of the deck fins contribute to grip. • Reinforced handle pole ensures durability to match the high power and speed. Handle pole pivot is positioned to reduce the amount of forward/backward movement at the grips to minimize rider fatigue, especially during long rides or races. • Indent beneath the handle pole provides convenient storage for small items that are secured with a rubber net. • Engine and fuel warning lamps are built in to the handle pole. • Stainless steel KX™ motorcycle-style handlebar for increased corrosion resistance Sleek & Sharp Styling • The SX-R’s lines were carefully crafted to give the machine a distinct Kawasaki look, especially from the front, while contributing to a compact-looking package. • SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) engine hood not only looks great but also provides easy access to the engine compartment for performing maintenance. • Full-circumference bumper contributes to the SX-R’s aggressive look while helping to protect the hull. • Racy graphics add to the sleek styling while hinting at the SX-R’s high level of performance. KAW-PEDIA AXIAL-FLOW JET PUMP Features: The JET SKI® pump, directly driven from the engine, pushes the watercraft with a stream of pressurized water. The fully- enclosed pump takes in water through the grate in the bottom of the craft, pressurizes it with an impeller, then pushes the water out the back at high speed, driving the watercraft forward. An axial-flow pump (one that pushes the water out in line with the pump center line) has guide vanes straightening the flow from the impeller. The guide vanes straighten the water flow and eliminate torque reaction which can cause the craft to roll during acceleration. Benefits: The axial-flow pump has excellent high RPM performance and good handling during acceleration. The completely enclosed pump has no exposed propeller. CHROME COMPOSITE CYLINDER PLATING Features: Kawasaki‘s chrome composite cylinder plating is a mixture of nickel-phosphorous alloy, ceramic, silicone carbine and some organic materials that is bonded directly to aluminum cylinder walls. This plating improves heat transfer, is porous so it holds lubrication well, is hard to resist abrasion and seizure, and provides a consistent coating of the cylinder wall, even around the chamfered edge at the top of the cylinder. This is especially useful in two-stroke engines since the consistent edges of the cylinder ports resist snagging piston rings and allows the top of the exhaust port to be straight for smoother flow. Benefits: Chrome composite plating adds durability, helps provide consistent power output, allows closer piston tolerances for more power and prevents hot spots that can lead to pre-ignition. DIGITAL FUEL INJECTION Features: An on-board, digital microprocessor reads various inputs from the engine, i.e. ignition timing, rpm, and throttle position, and from the environment, i.e. air temperature and pressure. It uses the information to decide the precise amount of fuel that the engine needs at that moment, and injects it into the intake tract. Benefits: The fuel injection system feeds the engine just the amount of fuel it needs, when it needs it. No extra fuel is wasted, nor is the engine forced to run too lean. The result is excellent fuel economy and, combined with power and torque when the rider demands it. The engine runs smoothly and powerfully from idle to top speed. KAWASAKI SMART STEERING (KSS) Features: The Kawasaki Smart Steering system features a steering sensor that is electronically linked to an on-board microprocessor. If the handlebar is fully turned in either direction and the engine rpm drops from a designated rpm, such as when the throttle is released at speed, the microprocessor activates the KSS system which raises engine rpm to provide enough thrust to initiate the desired turn. Benefit: This system improves handling by helping initiate corners more smoothly at higher speeds. Average riders may not even know the system is there, since they normally apply the throttle when initiating a corner. REVERSE Features: Some Kawasaki JET SKI watercraft have a reverse mechanism on the jet pump. A cable-operated reverse thrust bucket can be lowered over the mouth of the steering nozzle, redirecting the pump‘s thrust forward underneath the craft and pushing it backward. The reverse bucket is curved so no matter what direction the steering nozzle is pointed, the water is redirected toward the bow. Benefits: The reverse feature allows the watercraft to be ridden backward to increase maneuverability in tight situations.
