My mum was studying to be a nurse at NorthTec and found out about this applied writing course, so I came on board and now I’m in my final year. “The course is all online and the best part of it for me is meeting all the other students with an interest in writing. This is a breakthrough for me because I struggled at school to socialise. I think my school classmates would be surprised at what I’ve been capable of doing. “Doing this course has given me the confidence to know I can write stories for children with disabilities, and maybe help teach them through the stories. I also want to upskill in farming in general. I grew up on a sheep and beef farm owned by my grandfather and I’m ready to learn more now than just the labouring side of it. “Fencing is also part of our course and I’m surprised to learn that I’m not as good at it as I thought I was. I like to watch the tutor use the machinery like the tractor, the 125 motorbike and the quad truck, then when he trusts that we’ve got it, we get to have a go. “My long-term dream is to travel and apply my skills. Sometimes he’ll work with a group of us on the same thing, then he helps us one-on-one in our specialist areas. He guides us through the theory too but now with the new books and structures, we do a lot of that in our own time. I left school at 14 and I’m a talker and listener rather than a reader and writer, so there have been a few basic challenges but the tutor and my partner help me when I need it. “Every day is different and I want to take in as much as possible. I’m surprised at how much there is to learn and how keen I am. I jump on anything. I started with the extraction and the skidder tickets and now I’m doing log loading. Next I’ll move into mechanised processing then to the hauler tickets.
