About Sarcoma Cancer • Although it is a relatively rare disease, it is very important to cancer research • Researching rare cancers such as Sarcoma often leads to breakthrough advancements in general cancer research • While cancer is among the costliest diseases in the nation, funding for cancer research has been shrinking over the past decade, according to the American Association for Cancer Research • Sarcoma receives 1 to 2 percent of all cancer research funding
The Impact • Honors Seth Bailey, who passed away from Sarcoma cancer in 2003, and others who have courageously fought this rare cancer • Started in 2005 by Jackie and Tom Bailey, parents of Seth Bailey • Proceeds support the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Sarcoma Research Program • Over the past 14 years, Courage Ride has raised over $510,000 for sarcoma cancer research • Courage Ride donations make up 85% of all sarcoma seed grant funding at the university. • Since 2005, those dollars have seeded numerous sarcoma research grants, many leading to larger sarcoma research projects and support one of the largest sarcoma tissue banks in the Midwest
The Ride • Saturday, August 17, 2019 • New Start/Finish Location: Big Grove Brewery, Iowa City • Known for its scenic bicycle ride through the Amish countryside • Seven paved routes: 12, 16, 24, 37, 59, 86 and 110 miles • 500+ riders are expected to register this year • Cyclists receive maps, SAG support, mechanics and more • Catered breakfast and lunch is provided with registration • Unique and entertaining rest stops with live music • Silent Auction • Free skin cancer screening by UIHC dermatologists
Where your support goes • Directly to the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Sarcoma Research Program • The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center serves patients in Iowa and throughout the Midwest • UIHCCC Doctors Ben Miller, Munir Tanas, and Mo Milhem select sarcoma research projects to support • UIHCCC is a member of The Midwest Sarcoma Trials Partnership to create clinical trials and expand clinical trial opportunities for patients • Partnership includes: Mayo Clinic, Northwestern, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, Washington University at St Louis and the University of Iowa
