2018 Year-End Presentation Southern Nevada Chapter the International Code Council Sam Palmer SNICC Chapter President
EDUCATION “Education Is Our Future!” The Chapter sponsored educational offerings throughout the year, including the annual EduCode conference and expo, plus code classes organized by the Education Committee, chaired by 1st VP Terry Kozlowski of the City of North Las Vegas.
EduCode The EduCode Committee and EduCode Director Alan Ellis work year-round on the EduCode conference and expo in March at the Orleans Hotel Conference Center. 1,300 attendees 90-plus classes – with ICC CEUs 25 exhibitors in the expo area Certification testing Networking and social opportunities Registration has begun for EduCode 2019!
Education continued…. Firestopping In January, the Chapter presented a seminar on firestopping, with instructor Brice Miller. Nearly 75 registrants signed up for morning or afternoon class sessions. SN-ICC seminars and classes are approved by ICC for CEUs.
Education continued… IRC/IBC Transition About 150 SN-ICC members and others attended the 2018 IRC and IBC transition classes in July. The Chapter and the ICC Learning Center partnered to present the classes to assist local code and construction professionals prepare for the transition from the 2012 codes to the 2018 codes.
Education continued… UPC/UMC Update Nearly 100 Chapter members, other code professionals and trade contractors attended the 2018 UPC/UMC Update classes in November at the Henderson Inspection Services building. The classes were a joint effort by SN-ICC and the local IAPMO Chapter.
Code Development Members of the Code Development Committee, chaired by Secretary/Treasurer Kevin McOsker, spent much of the year working on the jurisdictions’ adoption of the 2018 codes and local amendments. The new codes go into effect in February.
Public Outreach The Public Outreach Committee, Chaired by David Goldstein of Geotek, spearheaded many outstanding activities and events in 2018. - Scholarship Program - Swimming Safety Grants - Contributions to community organizations - Workforce Development
Public Outreach Swim Grants The Chapter donated $2,500 to each local government jurisdiction – a total of $17,500 - to fund swimming lessons for toddlers, the group with the highest rate of drownings.
Public Outreach Swim Grants continued… The Chapter gave $6,000 to the Clark County Health District and $5,000 to the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition for drowning-prevention programs.
Public Outreach Scholarships Thanks to the efforts of the Public Outreach Committee, in partnership with the Public Education Foundation, the Chapter awarded $35,000 in scholarships to 36 local high school and college students to continue their education.
Public Outreach Supporting Community Groups The Chapter contributed $20,000 to HomeAid Southern Nevada, the charitable arm of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association, for its work to build and renovate shelter for the homeless in our community.
Public Outreach Workforce Development The Chapter contributed $10,000 for local high school technical training. Also, the Chapter participated in two career fairs – one at UNLV and the other at the Clark County School District’s Adult Education Program – to promote careers in the code profession.
Public Outreach Continued….. The Public Outreach Committee teamed with the Membership Committee and board members to staff an informational table at a membership mixer of the Southern NV Home Builders Association in September. The Chapter promoted membership, EduCode and upcoming code classes.
Communications The Communications Committee, Chaired by Cathy Altstatt of Clark County, contributed to several campaigns in 2018 including: - Building Safety Month - Welcome to Las Vegas ABM Promo Video - Assisted with the “Preview Las Vegas” Dessert Event at the ICC ABM in Richmond, Va.
Communications Building Safety Month - The Chapter participated in the annual Building Safety Month (May) campaign to raise awareness about what it takes to create and sustain safe structures. - The Chapter provide all local jurisdictions with ICC Building Safety Month promotional materials. - Building Safety Month was the theme of the May Chapter Meeting.
Communications Las Vegas ABM Promo The Chapter sponsored development of a promotional video highlighting our beautiful city and encouraging attendance to the 2019 ICC ABM in Las Vegas.
Special Events The Membership Committee, chaired by 2nd VP Jim Gerren of Clark County, organized several special events for the members’ enjoyment. - ‘SN-ICC Night’ at a 51s baseball game in June - Membership Networking Mixer at the Mob Museum in October - ‘SN-ICC Night’ at a Vegas Golden Knights game in November - Also, the Chapter achieved record membership of 347 as of November 30, a 26.7 percent increase from 2017.

Special Events ‘SN-ICC Night’ at 51s Game - 50 members and their guests enjoyed the ballgame in the comfort of the Club Level Restaurant overlooking home plate. - Attendees enjoyed complimentary drinks and food.

Special Events Membership Mixer at Mob Museum Members enjoyed drinks, hors d’oeuvres and self-guided tours of this innovative museum in Downtown Las Vegas during a membership networking mixer in October.
Special Events ‘SN-ICC Night’ at Golden Knights Game The first members-only ‘SN-ICC Night’ at a Vegas Golden Knights game in November was a huge success with 60 lucky members and their special guests enjoying discount tickets to see the game at T-Mobile arena.

Chapter Meetings… The Chapter hosted 10 Chapter Meetings in ‘18. February – Sherman Hamlett of Fantek “Make Up Air Systems” April – Past President Steve DiGiovanni, P.E., a Fire Protection Engineer at Clark County, discussed code proposals for tall wood buildings.
Chapter Meetings… June – Secretaary/Treasurer Kevin McOsker of the City of Las Vegas presented the fiscal 2018-2019 budget proposed by the board of directors. Following the presentation, the members voted to approve the spending plan.
Chapter Meetings… July – Nat Hodgson, Southern NV Home Builders Association “State of the Housing Industry” August – Jesse Karns, P.E., S.E., MiTek “The New Generation of Lateral Force Resisting Systems for Light-Framed Buildings”
Chapter Meetings… September – Joint meeting with the Structural Engineers of Southern Nevada Guest speaker – Gerald Gunny, P.E., S.E. of the City of Henderson “General Overview of 2018 IBC Structural Updates and Changes”
Chapter Meetings… October – The Annual Ethics Meeting, with speaker Yvonne Nevarez Goodman, executive director, NV Commission on Ethics Sam Palmer showed “Preview Las Vegas” video prepared by Communications Committee for the ICC ABM in Richmond, Va.
Chapter Meetings… November – Sam Palmer reported on 2018 International Code Council Annual Business Meeting in Richmond, Va. Chapter members promoted EduCode 2019 and the ICC ABM coming to Las Vegas in October 2019. Members also attended and participated in the code hearings there.
