2018 AUSTRALIAN MINIGOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday, 27th October 2018 Putt Putt Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast
2018 AUSTRALIAN MINIGOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS INTRODUCTION Competitive minigolf is huge overseas, yet has not been available in Australia. Until now. The nationwide search for minigolf players to represent Australia at the World Minigolf Championships began in November 2016 by the World Minigolf Sport Federation’s Oceania Representative. After a successful online campaign, the first Australian team competed in Croatia in September 2017. The team was made up of a Perth couple, a mother and son (and owner of Putt Planet in Sydney), a keen Sydney businessman who had dreams of wearing the “baggy green cap” and two Melbourne enthusiasts who were able to convince a third to join the crew. Along side the kiwi crew, the team were shocked to learn the international courses, rules and balls were completely unexpected and a truly remarkable experience was held and life long friendships were made. Now the top players from participating clubs around Australia will be invited to play at the first official Australian Minigolf Championships on 27th October 2018. Organised by the Australian Minigolf Federation and endorsed by the World Minigolf Sport Federation and Golf Australia, the 2018 winners of the inaugural Australian Minigolf Championships will have the opportunity to go on to represent Australia at the 2019 World Minigolf Championships in China. This is a legit world title.

The Youth World Championships are also biennial and began in 2002, with the annual World Adventuregolf Masters launching in 2011. Continental Championships currently take place in Europe and Asia on alternate years to the World Champs, and the establishment of the Oceania Minigolf Federation took place in early 2016 with future plans to host international tournaments. • Germany are currently top ranked in both and men and woman categories, with Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Austria close behind.
AUSTRALIAN MINIGOLF FEDERATION GOALS To give Aussie’s the chance to representing their country in minigolf. To become a national champ. To spread the news that if you did not make the cut with one of our regular past time sports such as AFL, League, Rugby Union, Soccer or Netball - that we have paved a way for higher honours and can give you the opportunity to compete at the World Minigolf Championships - that’s if your good enough. The approach is slightly tongue and cheek, with the drive to create some banter amongst mates and unearth all the minigolfing memories people have from playing at a young age. Most Aussies have no idea how serious the sport is in Europe and the United States. In the United States there can be significant prize money on the line, and in Europe there are large leagues where athletes are paid by clubs and known as professionals within the circuit. HISTORY 2015 - The committee was created by a local Minigolf owner in Victoria. Although his application was approved by the World Minigolf Sport Federation and they were excited to have Australia on the books as an official partner. No progression was made within the committee and the association remained dormant. 2017 - After the success of the New Zealand team competing at the 2015 World Minigolf Championships, the 2017 World Minigolf Championships in Croatia were looming. Elected after these World Champs, the Oceania representative on the WMF committee Lucy Giesen was on a mission to expose some Aussie’s to the international circuit of minigolf and show them what it was all about – after all, Kiwi’s and Aussie’s love a trans-tasman battle. After some word of mouth, Facebook and email marketing, a team of 6 men and 2 women were recruited to represent Australia as the first team to compete at an international minigolf event. 2018 - After the success and insight at the World Champs, a committee was formed and the organisation was legally sanctioned. October 2018 - This will be the first official Australian Minigolf Champs, sanctioned by the World Minigolf Federation and endorsed by Golf Australia.
