2018-19 ANNUAL REVIEW OWN THE PODIUM To be a world leader in high performance sport at the Olympic and Paralympic Games
MESSAGE FROM CHAIR AND CEO Following Canada’s best ever winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in PyeongChang in 2018, Own the Podium (OTP) and its partners went to work to lay out plans for the next quadrennial leading to the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing. A major post-games de- brief was attended in early May by all winter national sport organizations to examine lessons learned over the quadrennial as well as “at Games”. Each sport looked at the positives, negatives and suggested changes needed to continue our quest as a leading winter sport nation. The host nation China will pull out all the stops in 2022 to climb the medal table along with traditional rivals Norway, Germany and the USA. On the summer side, at the mid quad point, Canada’s athletes were tracking well and preparing for important world championships in 2019. The Coaching Enhancement Program, a collaborative initiative involving the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), Sport Canada and OTP, continues to strengthen our high performance coaches by providing critical assessments and tailored professional development opportunities to address gaps and Todd Nicholson Anne Merklinger develop the expertise of our coaches to be “world class”. Board Chair CEO It has been my privilege as Chair of Own the Podium and a former Paralympic Sledge Hockey player, to work alongside a great Board of Directors including new Board members Araba Chintoh, Robert Hatch, John Mills, Sue Paish and Tara Whitten. Finally, over the course of 2018-19, OTP was actively engaged in several consultations, strategy sessions, workshops and a National Summit addressing safe sport issues. OTP stands with all partners in sport that pledge to make sure that all Canadians have the right to participate in sport in an environment that is safe, welcoming, inclusive, ethical and respectful. 2
