2016-2017 MNLA Membership Directory & Buyer’s Guide Mission The mission of the Montana Nursery & Landscaping Association (MNLA) is to provide programming, informa- tion, and other opportunities for professional development of direct benefit to its members. MNLA monitors and lobbies governmental agencies on issues relevant to the membership. MNLA promotes the nursery and landscape industry in Montana through education and community interaction. History of the Montana Nursery & Landscape Association The Montana Nursery and Landscape Association was formed in 1954 by a group of professionals who shared similar concerns and interests in the emerging industry of horticulture. In the years that followed, the industry in Montana grew, and so did MNLA. We now represent nursery stock growers, retailers, landscape contractors, garden center owners, irrigation contractors, landscape architects, allied industries and associ- ated industry individuals within—and outside—the state of Montana. There are a growing number of benefits of belonging to MNLA, including legislative and regulatory representa- tion; high-quality continuing education through seminars, publications, and certification; referrals; and numer- ous networking opportunities. Association Position on Nursery Sales Practices The Montana Nursery & Landscape Association (MNLA), is dedicated to belief in and support of members’ efforts to distinguish themselves as plant experts in the horticultural industry. The sale of suitable, quality plant material and the provision of horticultural education and expertise by MNLA members to the public are essential to the industry’s success and longevity. Nursery sales practices and conditions that do not foster consumer confidence and success are harmful to the industry and considered unethical by the Association. Passed by the MNLA Board of Directors August 22, 2002 at a meeting held in Red Lodge, Montana. Rationale MNLA encourages member firms to adopt the concept of “the Right Plant for the Right Place” and to provide customers with the information and education needed to install and maintain healthy plants in appropriate landscapes. We realize that occasionally customers can not be dissuaded from plant materials that may not be appropriate for the intended location and that clients may not always be receptive to outside expertise. But, wherever possible, we encourage members to engage in sales practices that maximize customer sat- isfaction and plant success. Sales practices and conditions that foster failure reflect poorly on the firm that engages in them and erodes consumer confidence in the industry. The following are just a few of the good nursery practices the MNLA encourages: • Guarantees of plant materials • Quality plant stock from hardy sources • Instructions or tags which identify plant hardiness and special needs • Promotion of disease resistant cultivars • Sales of bareroot plant materials before they break bud Contact Us Montana Nursery & Landscape Association P.O. 2016-2017 MNLA Membership Directory & Buyer’s Guide Letter from the President MNLA President’s Members Letter 2016 In Billings, we have had a great year for the nursery and landscape industry. The season started early and continues with the very seasonable weather this fall. I suspect this was the case for many of you around the State, so as we bring another season to a close I hope that we finish strong and end up with productive years. I became involved with MNLA because I care about the Green Industry and I was interested in improving my professional credentials. Over the years, I have benefited by becoming certified as a Plant Professional and Pesticide Applicator while gaining significant education relevant to my profession. I became involved with the MNLA Board to ‘give back’ to the association for the many years of benefits I received. As MNLA President, I believe our association’s greatest role is to provide an environment to encourage education and professional development. In March, the board met in Bozeman to preview the site for this year’s Green Expo. The meeting was followed by a strategic planning retreat where many past presidents of MNLA joined to share their experiences on the board. With our Executive Director’s prompting, the board felt the need to update the strategic plan that had been developed in 2007. The meeting provided a refreshing glimpse of history for our current board and was a very productive beginning to the process of strategic planning, due to the generous efforts made by past presidents to attend. The MNLA board met again in Missoula, prior to Fall Tour, to continue work on the strategic plan. Another meeting will be scheduled early in 2017. One of my favorite MNLA events, Fall Tour provides a relaxed environment to visit member businesses / project sites for a practical, ‘hands on’ experience. This year’s tour featured Missoula, highlighted by a dinner gathering at Caras Nursery that included vendors’ displays and equipment demos while socializing amidst one of Montana’s premier retail nurseries. Bill Caras, MNLA Past President, also provided lively comment as our tour guide on the bus, an experience I will cherish for years to come. If you have not participated in Fall Tour, please give it consideration the next time the tour is near, as it is always fun and rewarding. Green Expo will ‘break new ground’ in 2017 in Bozeman. The convention will feature many speakers from Montana State University, including the keynote. Dr. Marsha Goetting, Extension Family Economics Specialist, will present ‘Wildflower Reflections: Family, Legacies and Estate Planning. Also featured, Jennifer Noble, AmericanHort, will discuss the future of our industry as well as regional speakers covering topics such as arboriculture, social media and ‘ever popular’ plant talks. Look for new and improved twists at the Trade Show, Banquet and Breakfast of Champions. Social networking opportunities will be many; I look forward to seeing you there. Last, but not least, I would like to mention the contributions from our Billings MNLA Chapter. Thank you to Steve Lehenbauer and Jason Albaugh from River Ridge Landscape Co. , Tim Groener of 2M Co. and our ED, Jyl Story for your efforts with the 3rd Annual MNLA Golf Scramble and also for establishing monthly MNLA Chapter meetings this summer. These meetings have been well attended and have attracted a few new members. I believe the meetings can ‘bridge the gap’ between Green Expo and Fall Tour, using the momentum created at Green Expo to help to keep the membership connected through the year. Thanks for providing a template that our other Chapters can follow. I look forward to expanding this program with a discussion table at the Breakfast of Champions table in Bozeman.
