201617 Classical Cottage School GRAMMAR SCHOOL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Adventures in Narnia I Deanna Solomon Prerequisites: 4th Grade Reading Level or Parents read books aloud Ages: 912 Tuition: $175.00 This class meets 3 times a month for 1 1/2 hours. This class does not meet on Roman Culture Days. Materials Fee: $50 (Additional fee for purchase of all 7 booksTBD) “I am ‘in your world’”, said Aslan. “‘But there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.’” —C. S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. We will travel through these inspiring fantasy books, exploring the wonderful land of Narnia, learning about the Pevensie children, sharing our impressions of their adventures in Narnia, learning to love Aslan and in turn, developing a love for reading. Students will actively read and discuss important quotes, underlining and highlighting them in our books. Students will also learn literary terms such as symbolism, metaphor, contrast and climax and learn to look for them while reading. We will marvel at the hidden truths, deep mysteries and spiritual treasures throughout the Chronicles of Narnia. This class will be reading the first four Chronicles of Narnia this year, including The Magician’s Nephew, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Horse and His Boy, and Prince Caspian, approximately 25 pages per week. Students will also complete approximately three assignments each week from the following: short answer & comprehension questions, art projects such as drawings, paintings, sketches, or a short writing assignment. Anticipate one larger project per semester, and possible extra activities such as a movie screening, and Narnia dress up day or tea party. Alpha Speech Debbie Snyder Prerequisites: none Ages 1013 Tuition: $175.00 This class meets 3 times a month for 1 ½ hours. The class does not meet on Roman Culture days. Materials Fee: $20.00 This class includes storytelling, impromptu speaking, speech games, beginning debate, & more. Speeches will be developed and memorized. There will be a presentation at the end of each semester for siblings and parents. Outside competitions will be encouraged for students who are 12 or older by January 1st, 2017. (Not mandatory). Younger students will be given reasonable expectations, but will have the advantage of learning from older students. First Semester Focus: Monologue (First Person) & Interpretive speeches Second Semester Focus: Platform speeches (Original Oratory or Persuasive) Note: Those who have taken Storytelling this past school year are encouraged to take this class again. Every year is different. Speech skills build with age. New speeches are written and prepared every year. New goals are set. Many homeschool students participate in this activity for many years. Competitions are for students ages 1218. Classical Cottage School offers advanced classes at the high school level for both speech and debate for ages 1418. 3
American Sign Language: Learning Sign through Songs and Stories Leila Robertson Prerequisites: None Ages: 8 10 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $8.00 & the required *text to be purchased by the student which ranges from $22 (used) $40 (new) online. American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual language using shape, placement, and movement of the hands along with facial expression and body movement to communicate. It is primarily used in the United States and Canada. In this class, students will have the opportunity to learn and use the ASL alphabet, ASL numbers, and a large variety of ASL signs for the purposes of signing songs, poems, prayers, and ASL storytelling of children's books. No previous knowledge of ASL is needed as the focus of this class is learning signs in the context of songs and stories and then performing the final product. Games will be used often to review signs and give the students and opportunity to practice their ASL with one another. Each week, for homework, the students will need to practice the new signs learned and review previously learned signs. *Text: The Gallaudet Children's Dictionary of American Sign Language 1st Edition, DVD Features Every Sign Plus Practice Sentences Edition by The Editors of Gallaudet University Press (Author), Jean M. American Textiles Holly Fontaine Prerequisites: none Ages: 714 Tuition: $145.00 This class meets 3 times a month for 1 ½ hours. This class does not meet on Roman Culture days. Material Fees: $60.00 This class will teach students to create several types of handmade textiles. We will spend four to six weeks each on different skills: knitting, crocheting, basic bead jewelry, and a bonus project. Materials will be provided for two projects in each skill. The materials fee includes the items listed below. Moms and dads are welcome to join us for the class and may pay just the materials fee for their participation or just come hang out. Materials included: yarn, knitting needles, crochet hook, beads, findings, bonus project materials. Art in Science and Nature Jan Copley Wilkerson Prerequisites: None Ages: 6 to 8 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $50.00 Throughout the year, we will explore the world around us and discover its wonders. Students will be exposed to a variety of concepts that will be expressed through art. Just as children learn the ABC's to read and the scales to play music, we will learn how to observe the world in terms of the five basic elements of shape as we learn to draw. The students’ work will be collected and then presented at the end of the year in their personal portfolios. 4
Children’s Year Kathleen Moorcones Prerequisites: none Ages: 35 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 A wonderful exploratory class for ages 3 5. Students will use manipulatives, songs, and story books to discover the alphabet while developing skills in letter sound recognition and fine motor development all in a fun and positive environment. This is the start of a two year rotation. The second year will focus on numbers. Classical Studies: Greek History and Mythology Mimi Larsen/Angie Steele Prerequisites: None Ages: 8 10 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $30.00 This is the first course in a 3year Classical Studies cycle (although students do not necessarily need to take these classes in chronological order). Children will explore Ancient Greece with an emphasis on mythology, culture, geography and history. They will learn about famous people, places, and events while creating an interactive notebook, completing craft projects and playing ancient games. Occasional homework assignments will be given not to exceed 30 minutes. Countries and Cultures Heather Frommack Prerequisites: none Ages: 7 9 Tuition: $90.00 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $35.00 Countries and Cultures is a new class where the goals are to create a beginning understanding and appreciation of different countries and cultures. Students will learn about children in other countries through interactive activities, inclass projects and stories. They will develop an appreciation and respect for different peoples and cultures while understanding that God created and loves all people. Children will create a notebook including maps, a pretend passport and more. Warning: Instructor has been known to dress up and come to class as "guest speakers" which requires a good sense of humor and flexibility amongst students. Discovering the Great Artists II Angie Steele Prerequisites: None Ages: 8 to 12 Tuition: $175.00 This class meets 3 times a month for 1 1/2 hours. The class does not meet on Roman Culture Days. Materials Fee: $40.00 Exploring the artists’ backgrounds and critiquing their works of art, students will study the Great Masters from the Renaissance to the present. The majority of each class will be spent doing a handson activity in which the students will apply the styles and techniques of the artists while allowing for individual creativity. This is Part II of Discovering the Great Artists. 5
Early American History for Children I Mimi Larsen Prerequisites: None Ages: 5 to 7 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 This class is a literaturebased approach to learning American history for young children. The students will learn about our nation's history as they listen to "living" books about famous Americans and key events. Beginning with the Vikings and the discovery of North America, class will progress through the Colonial Age to the founding of our nation, finishing with Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. Inclass activities and craft projects will reinforce and supplement the readings. The children will create their own Early American History Book, completing pages weekly. Homework is optional. Elementary Grammar I Angie Haecker Prerequisites: None Ages: 69 Tuition: $90.00 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $25.00 Elementary Grammar I provides an introduction to grammar through the FourStrand Approach (as recommended by Jessie Wise) of Memory Work, Copying and Dictation, Narration, and Grammar Rules. Through exposure to properly spoken and written English, students will learn to recognize and define nouns, verbs, pronouns, and other parts of speech. Students will memorize the definitions of various parts of speech and work on proper capitalization and punctuation. A weekly homework page is given to the students, which should take less than 30 minutes to complete. Elementary Grammar III Angie Haecker Prerequisites: Some exposure to grammar would be helpful but not necessary. Ages: 810 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $35.00 (Includes Student Workbook) Elementary Grammar 3 is a continuation of Elementary Grammar 2, which is not necessarily a prerequisite. We will continue to build upon the student’s grammar and writing skills covering a wide range of topics with more detail. These include: parts of speech, sentence diagrams, and skills in beginning writing, story telling, and narration. The four classical strands (as recommended by Jessie Wise) of Memory Work, Copywork & Dictation, Narration, and Grammar Rules are used to teach students throughout the course and art reproduction, poems, fables, and other short writings are used as prompts for discussion, narration, and writing. Keep in mind that this is not a creative writing class. A student workbook will be provided at the beginning of the year. Weekly homework will be required that will take approximately 30 minutes or less to complete. 6
Elementary World Geography, Year 1 Janette Cascio Prerequisites: none Ages 1011 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $30.00 This class is an exploration of the world for upper elementary students. Students will learn the basics of geography as well as locations of continents, countries, islands, mountains, deserts, bodies of water, and other physical features. We will do an overview of each continent. Homework will be approximately 1/2 1 hour per week and will consist mainly of labeling and memorizing maps. No prior knowledge of geography is required. Exploratory Italian A Kathryn Stocco Prerequisites: none Ages 46 Tuition: $90 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $15.00 This class offers a fun introduction to the Italian language and covers some aspects of Italy's culture and geography as well. Useful conversational phrases, relevant vocabulary, and simple grammar concepts are taught using immersion learning whenever possible. Children at this age are introduced to the language through active games, story books, Italian versions of songs already familiar to them, and occasional activity sheets to reinforce concepts in class and at home. Exploratory Italian B Kathryn Stocco Prerequisites: none Ages 79 Tuition: $90 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $15.00 This class for older children offers a fun, yet more structured, introduction to the Italian language. (It is not necessary that a student take Level A prior to this class). Children at this level will have the advantage of applying all four elements of language learning listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis will be on sequential language learning, so that the students are using what they learn during each class and building upon those learned skills for each successive class period. Symtalk curriculum materials are used, as they support one of the most effective language learning methods available for this age level. Students will be speaking and "reading" whole sentences in Italian from the first class! There will be written homework assigned, not to exceed a 1/2 hour per week, which may require parental guidance.* Fundamentals of Choral Singing Sophia Cuddeback Prerequisites: none Ages 818 (or before voice change in the case of boys). Tuition: $145.00 This class meets 3 times a month for 1 1/2 hours. The class does not meet on Roman Culture Days. Materials Fee: $15.00 The purpose of this course is to give its participants the joyful experience of group singing in unison and in parts. This course will develop ear training through aural memorization and repetition in class and the 7
Solfegge method as a transition to rudimentary sight singing. The course will use English and American folk music, rounds and Christmas carols, Negro spirituals, Latin chant and polyphony. Homework will consist in listening to provided recordings and memorization of lyrics. NO PREVIOUS SINGING OR CHORAL EXPERIENCE NEEDED only a good attitude! Great Books (Year 1 Rotation) Angie Haecker Prerequisites: None Ages: 46 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $15.00 In Great Books your child will be exposed to literature of enduring value. Each week we will read a different story that will help to cultivate a love of reading. We will discuss different elements of stories such as setting, characters, plot, conflict and illustrations. We will introduce literary devices and concepts as relevant to the story and ageappropriate. Your child might recognize authors of some of their favorite stories and will be introduced to unfamiliar authors, even spending a few weeks getting to know a particular author or two through an author study. We will also incorporate an activity that relates to either a theme or a skill set from the story which could involve a craft, game, song or reenactment. If your child was in Great Books 2015/16, new literature will be presented in our Year 1 rotation. HandsOn Science Dianne Klopp Prerequisites: None Ages: 911 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $45 If science experiments never seem to get done because you don’t want to make a mess or can never remember to buy red cabbage when you need it, then this class is for you! This course will focus on engaging, fun experiments that get students excited about science. Each week students will perform a different handson experiment or create a model. We will cover a wide range of topics including astronomy, electricity, magnetism, states of matter, chromatography, kitchen chemistry, DNA, food webs, and rocketry. Intro to Rhythm and Melody Sophia Cuddeback Prerequisites: none Ages 47 Tuition: $90 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $5.00 An introduction to rhythm and melody through English and American folk songs and nursery rhymes set to melody, as well as Christmas carols during the first semester. Learning through Literature Angie Steele Prerequisites: None Ages: 9 12 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 With a focus on Newbery award winning books, the students will be developing the fundamental skills necessary to recognize literary elements of a story, such as characterization, setting, plot, conflict, and 8
theme. Weekly classroom participation will be expected as we discuss the book. Inclass activities will be designed to teach the students to interact with and understand the story. At home, the students will read weekly from the literature and answer comprehension questions which will be discussed in class. There will be a book response assigned at the end of reading each book. This class is considered a bridge class to the Upper School. The books the students will be reading include The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien, Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare, Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. Learning Through Literature Jeanne Delaney Prerequisites: none Ages: 912 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 Focusing on Newbery award winning books, this course is designed for the student ready to take on the task of learning to gather information from the reading in order to begin writing paragraphs and brief papers. The students will be developing the fundamental skills necessary to recognize literary elements of a story, such as foreshadowing, character description, conflict, and theme. They will learn to write notes in the book as well as highlight information for class discussion and for writing papers. Weekly classroom participation will be expected as we discuss the book, take notes, and review vocabulary. Inclass projects will be designed to teach the students to interact with and understand the story. At home, students will read weekly from the literature and answer questions which will be discussed in class. Therefore, students are expected to come to class with homework completed and ready to learn. The average number of pages assigned each week will be about 50. As the students read from the book, they will learn to write paragraphs that analyze an element of the story. There will be one paragraph “essay” per book. Meet the Composers Heather Frommack Prerequisites: none Ages: 911 Tuitions: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 The Lord created music and He created us to both make and appreciate music. "Classical" music is uniquely part of our Western civilization and research supports that listening to classical music aids brain development. This course provides students an opportunity to get to know 26 famous composers, their music, their times, character and faith. Students will also learn about 6 eras of music from Baroque to Contemporary and create a music appreciation lap book. Students will learn to recognize and appreciate important pieces of music from each era and composer through class time exposure, explanation, games and quizzes. We will be using "A Young Scholar's Guide to Composers". 9
Nursery Rhymes and Motor Skills Kathleen Moorcones Prerequites: none Ages: 35 Tuitions: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 A new class emphasizing cooperative play to guide the youngest children to reach a common goal. Play is how young children learn, so through this relaxed medium, children will develop social, emotional and cognitive skills. Puppets, story building blocks, outdoor fun and dress up are a few of the activities offered in the class. Begining Penmanship, Intro to Cursive Angie Haecker Prerequisites: None Ages: 68 Tuition: $90.00 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $35.00 In Penmanship class your student will improve their printing skills while beginning cursive. Students will transition to cursive beginning with the simple lines that are the building blocks for all of the letters instead of starting with “Aa” and ending with “Zz”. Students will learn and practice through copywork which will nourish the mind and heart with beautiful literature, poetry and scripture. Weekly homework should take 30 minutes or less to complete. Writing materials will be provided in class. Prima Lingua Latina I Julie Shanabrook Prerequisites: None Ages: 6 to 8 Tuition: $90.00 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $15.00 Prima Lingua Latina I is an introduction to Latin and a preparatory course for students who plan to continue taking Latin in the Upper School. Using much of the same vocabulary as the first 6 chapters of the Upper School text, Lingua Latina, students will learn basic grammar, declensions, and Latin sayings. Students in this class will also be introduced to the geography of Rome (“Rome was Built on Seven Hills!”), Roman culture, history focusing on the kingdom of Rome, and Latin songs and prayers. A weekly homework page will require about 30 minutes to complete, and memory work such as poems and endings will benefit from daily repetition. All Prima students are encouraged to take advantage of Memory Period each week. Prima Lingua Latina III Julie Shanabrook Prerequisites: Prima Lingua Latina II Tuition: $90.00 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $15.00 Prima Lingua Latina III is the third and final year of an introduction to Latin and a preparatory course for students who plan to continue taking Latin in the Upper School. Using much of the same vocabulary in the first 6 chapters of the Upper School text, Lingua Latina, students will learn basic grammar, declensions, and Latin sayings. Students in this class will also be introduced to the geography of Rome, Roman culture and history with an emphasis on the Empire, and the reading and translation of simple fairy tales in Latin. All Prima students are encouraged to take advantage of Memory Period each week. 10
Primary Learning Through Literature Melissa McKay Prerequisites: none Ages: 68 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 We'll explore literature through a series of five classic children's books. Weekly classroom participation may include choral reading, discussions of settings, themes, and characters, and related craft projects. At home, students will be required to read (or be read to) assigned segments and answer comprehension questions which will be discussed in class. The tentative book list is as follows: Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown, Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective by Donald J. Sobol, Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder Science Detectives Dianne Klopp Prerequisites: Students should be solid readers and be able to write. Ages: 78 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $45.00 The Science Detectives course will be an indepth study of the human body. We will study the five senses and the following systems: cardiovascular, immune, muscular, skeletal, nervous, and digestive. We will also consider the important role good nutrition plays in making and keeping our bodies healthy. This course will be loosely based on The Human Body Detectives books and curriculum by Dr. Heather Manley, but we will heavily supplement the course with a wide variety of resources, including Magic School Bus books and DVDs, songs, and lots of handson experiments and models! We will spend approximately 46 weeks on each body system, allowing us time to develop a firm grasp of the material. While we will be taking a fun, interactive approach to learning the information, please be aware that this will be an intellectually challenging class due to the advanced vocabulary. Seasons of the Calendar Betsy Bellingham Prerequisites: none Ages: 46 Tuitions: $90.00 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $10.00 Learn which holidays and seasons we associate with the calendar months through stories, imaginative play and art. Emphasis will also include number and letter recognition. Shakespeare for Kids Melissa McKay Prerequisites: none Ages: 911 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 This class will introduce your children to one of the greatest authors of the English language. We'll begin by learning about Shakespeare and the Globe, then investigate several of his plays. We'll begin by reading from Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare, a wonderful book designed for making the stories accessible to the young while retaining much of the original Shakespearean language. We'll become familiar with the plays by discussing the stories, the verse, the imagery, and the characters, memorizing passages, and acting out short scenes in class. 11
Story of the World I: Ancients Jeanne Delaney/Kathy Herter Prerequisites: None Ages: 6 to 8 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $45.00 This class will cover the ancient world from 5000 B.C. to 400 A.D. We will learn what secret was buried in Shi Huangdi's tomb, what nomads ate, how a sixyearold became the last emperor of Rome, and many other wonderful historical facts. Our class includes: listening to the weekly stories, map work, some memory work during class time and many weeks will include craft activities. We will use the text Story of the World Vol. 1. You may find having the text at home to be helpful, but it is not a requirement. There will not be any required homework. Supervised Play Steve & Jenny Beaudouin Prerequisites: None Ages: 7 to 14 & age 56 if accompanied by adult Tuition: $75.00 This class meets 3 times a month for 1 1/2 hours. Materials Fee: $5.00 This group comes together for 90 minutes of physical activity and games. It is an opportunity for students to exercise and enjoy friends after a full day of academic classes. The games are chosen by the students, although a wide variety of sports and activities will be encouraged. Each student, regardless of age, is expected to participate in the day's activities. This class will meet on the CCS grounds, weather permitting. (This decision will be made by the teacher no later than lunchtime of that day.) Also, this class does NOT meet on the days that we have Roman Culture. Thinking Skills A & B Deanna Solomon Prerequisites: None Ages: Level A is for ages 4 to 6; Level B is for ages 7 to 10 Tuition: $90.00 for 32 half hour sessions Materials Fee: $50.00 This class is designed to provide activities for increasing verbal and nonverbal reasoning skills and figuralspatial skills in several important areas, including: similarities and differences, sequences, following directions, deductive reasoning, observation, classification, making inferences, visual logic and analogies. The skills are designed to improve the child's ability to view problems in different ways and train their minds to stretch in new directions. The skills utilized will cover critical, logical, analytical and creative thinking and help transfer this thinking into almost any subject areaand throughout life! The class will solve puzzles and brainstorm, working independently and in groups. This creative and fun approach will improve each student's attention, observation and memory. Two halfhour sessions will be offered with ageappropriate activities. Homework will be handed out each week but should take less than 30 minutes and it will be optional. 12
Virginia, Cradle of America Kelly Summers Prerequisites: none Ages: 1012 Tuition: $145.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 As a stepping stone toward more demanding Progym and Omni, VIrginia History will emphasize beginning note taking and student accountability for upper level grammar students ages 1012. Students will learn about Jamestown, Royal Governors, Capt. John Smith, and other amazing Virginia facts and faces while listening to class lectures, taking notes, and rewriting notes in paragraph form. Students can expect 30 to 60 minutes of homework per week, and will finish with a Virginia "Scrapbook" of their work. 13
GRAMMAR SCHOOL TEACHER BIOGRAPHIES Steve & Jenny Beaudouin Steve and Jenny homeschool their 4 children and have attended CCS for 7 years. They own 4 restaurants in Virginia and West Virginia. They previously taught PE at a local private school and they both help coach a local youth running club. Jenny attended West Virginia University and Steve has a degree in Civil and Architectural Engineering from Central Maine Technical College. Betsy Bellingham Betsy Bellingham is her daughter's mom. She began homeschooling when her daughter was 5 years old. Previously, she ran her own Interior Design Business. She has a BA from the University of Kentucky in Interior Design and Housing. Janette Cascio Janette Cascio is a professional cartographer and received a B.A. in Geography from Mary Washington College. Before homeschooling her children, she worked at the Defense Mapping Agency for 4 years as an air photo interpreter and at the U.S. Geological Survey for 12 years in mapping. This will be Janette’s 12th year teaching Geography at CCS. Sophia Cuddeback Sofia grew up in a large, musical, homeschooling family. She started studying violin by the Suzuki method at the age of six and completed her studies under Dr. Suzuki at the Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto Japan, earning her teaching certificate for Suzuki violin instruction through level ten. She currently teaches Suzuki violin privately from her home. In addition to her violin studies, growing up Sofia both played violin and sang in her mother's many choirs. At home Sofia’s singing with her siblings ranged from folk songs and rounds to chant and polyphony, and everything in between. She served as director of music ministry and choir director at St. John the Baptist in Front Royal, and has led numerous homeschooling children’s choirs. Sofia currently leads a children’s choir at a local private school. Still homeschooling three of her six children, she has been a CCS mom for four years. Jeanne Delaney Jeanne Delaney lives in Berryville with her husband, William, and has six kids. One daughter and son are post college, another son is in college. Anna graduated from CCS in 2013, Elisa in 2014 and attend college. She home schools her last daughter Emma. This will be her 11th year at CCS and 8th year as a teacher in the Grammar school. Jeanne graduated from California Polytechnic University with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Science. She worked as a Material Operations and Production Planner until “retiring” to raise her children. Holly Fontaine Holly Fontaine is a homeschool mother of three and lives in Winchester with her husband, Andre. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Oregon in 1994, then obtained licensure for teaching in Virginia and taught at several private schools. In 2011, she earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling from Liberty University. Holly has been an avid jewelry maker and knitter for many years, as well as a certified Precious Metal Clay (PMC) instructor since 2008. Holly is a parttime ski instructor at Bryce Resort. This will be her first year teaching at CCS. Heather Frommack Heather Frommack has a degree in nutrition sciences from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and is a Registered Dietitian. She has five children, has been homeschooling for 15 years having graduated two of her amazing students! Heather loves to teach and has been privileged to teach a wide variety of classes and students from elementary science classes, junior high history, literature and fine art and music appreciation, all the way to high school science and philosophy. (Just don't ask her to teach math!) She has created her own curriculum for numerous classes and loves to make learning come alive for her studentseven being known to show up for class dressed up as her own guest speakers. Her goal is to point her students to a love for truth, learning and God as they enjoy the learning process. 14
Angie Haecker Angie Haecker earned her B.S. in Elementary Education with a Learning Disability Endorsement from Valparaiso University and completed graduate courses in Reading Specialization at Shenandoah University. She taught for three years as a Learning Disability Resource teacher in a Christian school before moving to Virginia and starting a family. She homeschooled her two children, one a graduate of college and one a senior in college. This will be her eighth year teaching at CCS. Kathy Herter Kathy Herter earned her bachelor’s degree in History from Christendom College. She homeschools her four remaining children and has jumped the hurdle to having a collegiate scholar. She has been homeschooling for 13 years and volunteering as religious educator for six years. She is excited to share her knowledge of history and of the stories therein. Dianne Klopp Dianne Klopp is a homeschool mother of three boys. She received her BBA in Computer Information Systems and a minor in Economics from James Madison University. She received her Master's in Education from George Mason University, and is a licensed teacher. Prior to becoming a fulltime Mom, she worked in the computer industry designing and developing financial software. Mimi Larsen Mimi Larsen is a home school mother of six. She earned her BBA from the College of William and Mary. This will be her ninth year teaching at the Classical Cottage School. Leigh Ann Lynch Leigh Ann Lynch began homeschooling when her oldest was preschool age. Many years later, she now homeschools 3 of her 4 children, with her oldest off to college. A teacher by training, she received her Masters in Elementary Education from the College of William and Mary after graduating from Emory University with a BA in English. She has taken further graduate courses in Child Development at JMU. This is her fifth year teaching at CCS. Melissa McKay Melissa McKay is a homeschool mother of three boys. Prior to homeschooling, she spent ten years teaching at various levels. In addition to her courses at CCS, she also currently teaches Children's Literature at Patrick Henry College. She holds a BA in English from Oglethorpe University and an MA from Middlebury College. Kathleen Moorcones Kathleen Moorcones lives in Clarke County and homeschools her 8 year old daughter. Kathleen received her BA in Sociology from George Mason University. This is her first year teaching at CCS. She has a love for the little ones and looks forward to teaching them in a fun and positive way. Leila Robertson Leila Robertson is a home school mother of four. She received her BS in Education from Old Dominion University. She taught middle school science and math for Arlington County Public Schools for eight years before choosing to stay home and raise her children. Shortly after moving to Winchester, she completed her MS Degree as a Reading Specialist from Shenandoah University and continues to be a licensed teacher. Leila has had the privilege of benefitting from the strong offerings at CCS since her oldest child started there nine years ago. Julie Shanabrook Julie Shanabrook has homeschooled her 2 daughters for the past 12 years and survived one college application process. She was an Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia with a concentration in Biology, and received a Masters in Physical Therapy from Boston University. “Starting the Prima cycle with new Latin students is such a joy. Debbie Snyder Debbie Snyder has a current California Teaching Credential from Pepperdine University, California. She has been an educator for over 30 years, teaching various subjects in public, private, and homeschool classroom situations. For the last nineteen years, both on the West Coast and on the East Coast, she has been actively involved in speech 15
and debate as a teacher, board member, and coach. She has administered and coached a large club in Purcellville, VA. To update her own skills, she is presently a member of Toastmasters International. This will be Debbie’s third year teaching at the Classical Cottage School. Deanna Solomon Deanna Solomon graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies with a Concentration in Latin. Her studies took her to Greece and Italy, where she spent time traveling throughout mainland Greece, the Peloponnesus, Crete, Rome, Florence, Siena, Pisa, Capri, Pompeii and Ostia. In 2015, she earned a Master of Education with High Distinction, earning a Gold Medallion, through Liberty University. She has over twentysix years experience teaching and tutoring in the private, church and home school environments, including twelve years teaching Latin. An avid learner from the School of Life, Mrs. Solomon is passionate about Precept Bible Study, classical education, learning classical languages, reading great literature, sewing, and gardening. Deanna and her husband John are the parents of three boys: Taylor, Zachary and Mitchell, along with a new daughter in love – Emily. Deanna is a member of the Board of Advisors and serves as the Latin Department Chair. Kathryn Stocco Kathryn Stocco ("Caterina" to her family) holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villanova University, and also completed a minor in Italian Studies, having studied in Milano, Italy. For the past 14 years she has worked as a private Italian language tutor for both adults and children. Together with her native Italian husband, Chef Riccardo, she home schools their six children in a bilingual household speaking Italian and English. Angie Steele Angie Steele is a home school mother of 5 children. She earned an undergraduate degree in English from Immaculata University and received her Master’s in Education with a specialty in Reading from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She taught in Fairfax County Public Schools for 10 years. This will be her twelfth year teaching at CCS. Kelly Summers Kelly Mallory Summers is native of Winchester, but with a nomad's soul having lived in Dallas, San Diego, Honolulu, Norfolk, and most recently, Jacksonville FL. A former Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Portsmouth and Norfolk, Summers has a J.D., an M.A. in Government, and an M.S. in Forensic Science. She has used her education and trial experience to homeschool her three children for the last six years, and to convince them that they can't argue with her about school just yet. Summers, her husband, and family split their time between Winchester and their lake house in Florida. Jan Wilkerson Jan Copley Wilkerson, who has one son, has been homeschooling for 6 years. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. She worked at the Washington Design Center for 10 years before choosing to stay home with her son. 16
MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS & FAMILIES Chapel Families who want to include prayer in their day may attend Chapel in the sanctuary each Thursday morning from 10:40 to 10:55 a.m. Dads are invited to lead this devotional time with stories, songs, or Bible readings. Students join in the Pledge of Allegiance and prayers for our country at the conclusion of Chapel. We invite you to join this peacefilled time of fellowship with other Christians. Memory Period Kim Schatz Prerequisites: None Tuition: None Materials Fee: None All students are invited to attend a 15minute memory period of Latin drill from 8:10 to 8:25 a.m. Thursdays held in the Chapel. Students will chant Latin declensions and conjugations. No signup is required. Nursery Janette Cascio Ages: infants and toddlers 3 years of age and under as of the first day of class Tuition: $96 per class period for the year For matters of safety and space, the nursery cannot accommodate any child over the age of 3. The insurance fee is the ONLY registration fee required for children registered only for the nursery. Roman Culture Susan Schearer Once a month, our Latin teacher Susan Schearer presents an engaging slide presentation or dramatization on a different aspect of Roman culture. This presentation is open to all students and families enrolled in the Classical Cottage School as long as a parent is with the children and they are able to sit quietly and not detract from the learning process. No registration for these presentations is necessary. We strongly encourage students participating in Certamen to attend this program. Cost: free. Study Hall Fee: $10.00 Study Hall is intended for students who are mature enough to sit and work independently for an entire hour. They must bring enough work to occupy their time and understand that Study Hall is not a social hour. Our Study Hall Monitors do not assist with schoolwork. Students must register for Study Hall in advance. Study Hall is offered throughout the day as long as classrooms are available. 17
