COLLIE SHOW 2012 Page 3 Collie Agricultural Society Inc. Inc. President’s Message Welcome to the Collie Agricultural Society’s 60th year! In 1952 the Collie Chamber of Commerce and the Coalfields Road Board organized a public meeting to consider setting up a committee to organise a Collie Show. The result was the Collie Agricultural Society. In 1953 under the guidance of President C. Stark, The Society staged the first Collie Show. Opened by the Governor, Sir Charles Gairdner, it was a huge success. An estimated 6000 people came from as far as Perth for the event. It is believed that it was the biggest of any country show that year. (West Australian 5th November 1953. National Library of Australia.) Since that time the Show has waxed and waned under different presidents and different committees, until it has arrived at its 60th year, although not the 60th actual show. After considerable input from local organisations and interested persons, the Society decided to trial a one day show this year. Saturday 17th November 2012 - mark the date because it is going to be the best show in years. The current committee is determined to use this anniversary of the Society to bring the show back to its former status as one of the premier country shows in Western Australia. Negotiations are underway with the Showmen’s Guild to revamp the Sideshow Alley, and the entertainment/grounds committee has been hard at work all year to make this a memorable event. The hard-working schedule committee has totally revamped the pavilion schedule to make it more applicable to more people, and increased prize money by an average of fifty percent. There is something in this schedule for everyone, find your interest and enter! Finally, come and enjoy yourself, the Show is for you! MAX JOHNSON, PRESIDENT. ______________________________________________________________ Please check section and general regulations carefully. COLLIE SHOW 2012 Page 9 HISTORY OF PREMIER COAL LIMITED The Company began operations as Western Collieries Limited in 1950 – becoming one of three mining companies on the Collie coal fields. First production came from an open cut mine called Collieburn, followed by the development of two underground mines, Western 1 and Western 2 in 1952. Consolidation of the Collie coal mining operations to two producers in 1960 was the start of a rationalisation in the industry. Underground mining ceased in 1994 and the Premier Mine commenced in 1995. Total production from 1950 has been more than 100 million tonnes from five underground mines and six open cut operations. Premier Coal Limited, Western Collieries Limited, owes its existence to gold mining. Western Collieries launched on September 20, 1949, to meet a fuel shortage on the Kalgoorlie Goldfields. However, it was not until December, 1950, that the Collie operations began with an open cut mine at Collie Burn. Within a month the mine had produced nearly 5,000 tonnes of coal from a reserve of about 180,000 tonnes. The company had a contract to supply to the State Government until 1953. Western No. 1 underground mine was in operation by January 1952 followed by Western No. 2 underground mine a year later. Western No. 3 open cut mine opened in 1954. In 1958 Western No. 1 closed after producing more than 300,000 tonnes of coal. Western No. 2, however, prospered to eventually become the largest-ever underground producer, with more than 14 million tonnes, in the Collie Basin. In order to meet growing demand for coal the company opened Western No. 4 underground mine in the same year. In 1970, Western No. 5 open cut mine started production. At this time Western Collieries required a capital injection to embrace new mechanised technology and CSR started buying into the company in 1975 and completed the acquisition five years later in 1980, accelerating technical development and mining mechanisation, ensuring Western Collieries competitiveness. In 1979 the company signed a 20 year contract for the supply of coal with the State Government, reinforcing the security of coal use. Western No. 6 underground opened in 1980 followed by Western No. 7 in 1983. Wesfarmers Limited purchased Western Collieries in July 1989. In June 1994 underground mines were closed due to economic constraints. In March 1996 the Premier Mine expansion commenced and rehabilitation of Western No. 5 started two years later, in 1998. In July 1999 Premier Coal was awarded the Collie Power Station Contract and introduced a modular mining system. Fifty years of powering Western Australia was celebrated in 2003, with the launch of the book "Powering the State" in April of that year. In August 2005 Premier Coal won a Verve Energy 25-year contract to become sole supplier of coal. The company became the sole supplier of coal to Verve from July 1, 2010. ______________________________________________________________ Please check section and general regulations carefully. COLLIE SHOW 2012 Page 10 Rehabilitation work was completed on 172 hectares at Western No. 5 around the Cardiff area in 2007 and then in August of that year the company commissioned its pilot char plant. In February of 2009, the company's aquaculture project was opened and char plant operations were suspended. Premier Coal celebrated 60 years in Collie in 2009. The mine employs over 340 employees and is involved in numerous community groups. A long and valued association has been enjoyed with the Collie Agricultural Society and the Collie Show. The success at Premier Coal would not have been possible without the support of all the stakeholders and importantly our employees and the Collie community. So let us look back with pride and congratulate the Collie Agricultural Society on the 60th Anniversary. Collie Agricultural Society thanks Premier Coal for its long-standing support of the Collie Show i ______________________________________________________________ Please check section and general regulations carefully. COLLIE SHOW 2012 Page 13 The History of Griffin Coal “The Griffin Coal Mining Company was incorporated in 1927. However it’s early lacklustre performance changed, when in 1952, extensive coal seams were discovered on its Muja leases. Mining in Muja Open Cut began in 1953 and continued in operation until 2010. During that time approximately 315 million cubic metres of overburden were mined producing some 68 million tonnes of coal. Since inception Griffin has removed over 0.5 billion cubic metres of overburden and produced nearly 100 million tonnes of coal. Early mining methods involved manual pick and shovel from underground workings with coal being pulled from the pit using pit ponies. The photograph shows horses about to go underground around the early 1950’s. These methods were progressively replaced by mechanical methods and underground mining was replaced by open cut mining methods. Mechanical Shovels and draglines have been used over the years and the current mining fleet involves diesel powered diggers (like 3043 in the picture) with buckets which can lift over 60 tonnes in one scoop. Trucks with a capacity of over 240 tonnes transport the overburden to the dumps. Current operating mines include Ewington I and Ewington II which have produced 7.3 and 17.0 million tonnes of coal respectively. Ewington 1 mine, currently the main production operation, is operating at a rate of almost 4 million tonnes per annum”. The Griffin Coal Mining Company Pty Ltd [ACN 008 667 285.
