OVERVIEW Cloud Technology and/or Digital Transformation would be the second most widely used word in the year gone by after the word ‘POSITIVE’. Though these terms have been around for quite a long time now and are part of our businesses and social lives, we probably didn’t value it the way the pandemic has taught us to value and believe in it. Cloud computing is a critical component of businesses as the workforce has shifted to remote work, and next-generation technologies and initiatives such as digital business, customer intimacy and artificial intelligence have become a reality. It offers immense possibilities and benefits for all types of organizations, be it a large-scale enterprise, SME, MSME or the Government. In India, the adoption of this technology is gaining momentum and growing exponentially. Technology has become an integral part of businesses across the globe, and these businesses have been undergoing a transformation, specifically digital, to adjust to this shift. Cloud computing, cybersecurity and big data analytics are the top three digital technologies which are at the heart of this transformation. Research suggests that various levels of organizations in India are planning to move their business operations to the cloud as a top priority.
WHY CLOUD COMPUTING? Cloud computing has changed the way IT services are provisioned and used Its potential to scale a project and pay-as-you-go pricing model are the key benefits that the business houses can enjoy in order to achieve effectiveness in their operations In case of SMEs and MSMEs, cloud technology reduces barrier to their growth by reducing infrastructure costs and upfront investments Cloud has moved from being a relatively back-end (storage) to a front-end (business facing) technology, enabling on-demand access to resources, flexibility in scaling, cost reduction and business continuity The ongoing pandemic has accelerated this cloud shift, with even conventional industries like education and manufacturing fast-tracking its adoption According to Gartner, worldwide public cloud services spending is estimated to grow at 18% annually to over $360 billion by 2022, from about $258 billion in 2020
THE INDIAN STORY Government: The government is also emerging as an active participant with Niti Aayog, along with AWS, announcing the launch of the Frontier Technologies Cloud Innovation Centre, a public-private partnership to address societal challenges through digital innovation. Government is embracing cloud computing technology for expanding its e-governance initiatives throughout the country. Manufacturing & Large-Scale Businesses: The manufacturing sector has come a long way in adoption of the technology. Some of the most notable application areas in manufacturing suited for cloud are CRM and supply chain applications which provide better connectivity to external stakeholders and customers. The area of business intelligence and business analytics is also an important aspect for manufacturing domain as large amount of data is generated in the manufacturing process which is a challenge for CIOs. These technologies will help the organizations to better forecast products range and provide analysis for future investments in different business areas and understand customer demands and provide inputs for demand shaping. Human machine interface or HMI is another cloud technology which is making its way in the Indian manufacturing sector. Small and medium-sized enterprises: India’s small & medium businesses present a huge untapped opportunity. A recent NASSCOM study indicates that while over 60% of this SMB survey’s respondents have adopted cloud, nearly 50% are still at a nascent stage and only about 15% are advanced users. Given the pandemic, SMBs will also fast-track cloud adoption, with many skipping the proof-of-concept stage. IT Sector: Research studies done during the last 5 years indicate that Indian businesses are willing to spend over 36% of their IT costs on public cloud services due to its business flexibility and low costs. Considering the recent development in the IT sector, cloud technology has become even more strategic in the current scenario. The growing adoption of new-age technologies such as Big Data, analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), along with favourable government initiatives are propelling the growth of the Indian cloud infrastructure market. Government initiatives such as DigiLocker, MeghRaj, and Cloud vision for India 2022, among others, have supported the growth of the cloud infrastructure market and established India as a global hub for cloud computing, content delivery, and data communication services.
